The Simpsons Season 6 DVD

Just got back with this. For those that don't have it yet and hate the new box design(Personally, I don't mind. It's smaller and you don't have to fold out the hold thing to get to discs 3 or 4) they give you a number to call to find out about getting an old-style box paying shipping only.

You even get to hear Homer on the phone!

This is for those of you that do plan on getting the new package.

From TVShowsondvd.com

Don't like it? Most Simpsons fans we've heard from have LIKED the "Homer's Head" packaging for The Simpsons - The Complete 6th Season, and are looking forward to upcoming cases featuring the rest of the family's noggins. However, there ARE a significant number of fans who object to the change in box style, fearing that the new case will not fit in with the look of existing season sets, or just not fit at all if they have their shelving set in a pretty tight vertical fit. Don't worry, though, Fox will take care of you. Inside the box that arrives in stores next Tuesday, August 16th, you'll find a card that looks like this (except the phone # won't be obscured, even though it WILL be incorrect...more on that in a moment):

In short, Fox is saying (while taking a few humorous jabs at you; we guess they assume fans of The Simpsons WILL have a sense of humor, and can take a joke!) that anyone who wants to get the "Homer's Head" package replaced with a more standard-style slipcase package that resembles the old ones, may call a toll-free number and talk to Fox Customer Service to get this switched out. We do NOT know the terms of the deal: is it free? Does it cost? Do you have to pay at least shipping & handling? We just don't know. Nor do we know what the alternate packaging looks like, since Fox hasn't provided a picture of it.

As you can see, we've obscured the phone # on the card insert. Why? Two reasons: First, the phone # is NOT active for the slip cover offer until TUESDAY Aug. 16th...the day the new title hits the streets. We can also tell you that there will be a web site that can alternately be used to take advantage of this offer. The site is currently not active, and won't be until next Tuesday (there is filler material there in the meantime). Here at TVShowsOnDVD, we debated on whether or not we should reveal the correct # and the website URL to you right now, but decided in the end that we should just post it in a separate news story on Tuesday morning. Look for it then. It's highly likely that you'll need a proof-of-purchase to take advantage of the offer in any case. Well...maybe not.

In the meantime, it is IMPORTANT for us to pass on to everybody that THE "800" PART OF THE TOLL-FREE NUMBER IS WRONG! THE CORRECT NUMBER WILL HAVE AN "888" AREA CODE!. Yes, you heard that right: the phone # on the card is a typo. If you dial it as-is, you get some accounting firm that will consider phone calls on this subject to be nothing but a hassle, we're sure. They probably have nothing to do with this except the unhappy misfortune to have a similar toll-free number. Don't bother them, okay? Call the phone # on the card, but replace "800" with "888"!

(What's really funny about the typo is that, if you call the correct number after hours, you get a voice message from Fox Customer Service telling you to call back on Tuesday about the slip cover offer, and they read the phone # back to you...and the number the read is also the wrong "800" version. D'oh!)

Again, call the correct "888" version of the phone #, ON TUESDAY, or visit us here that morning to get the link to the website (which isn't mentioned on the insert card). All right? Okay. We appreciate the reader, who wished to remain anonymous, that took the time and effort to scan this insert and send it in to us.

Is the size consistent with seasons 1-5? More specifically, does it fit well on the DVD shelf? Of course, I'm buying this after work regardless, but I was a little disappointed when I saw they'd changed the packaging. Ordering the old style might be the way to go.
Any stores have this for under $30? That's a fair price but I'm just curious if any place is going lower than that.

I didn't really check. I just went right to Target for $30.

You can also go to www.simpsonsbox.com and print out a form to mail it in.
Should be getting mine in the mail today. Got it for a deal from Coconuts.com for about $14 after a couple of discounts and a MIR.
I was originally ticked off about the packaging change, but it's actually really grown on me since I bought it this morning.

It looks a little out of place now, but once the other four sets are released I think it will look pretty cool. It fits better on the shelf than I first expected, too, thanks to a transparent slip cover.
I'll be perfectly honest, this could come in an electronic slipcase repeatedly playing the video file of that guy getting fucked to death by the horse and I'd still run to the store to buy it.
The episodes in this season are so great it's ridiculous. And sad, considering how far the show has fallen.

There's a few episodes I hadn't seen in a while that felt like I was seeing them again for the first time. LISA ON ICE is much more fantastic than I remembered.
I find the new case rather flimsy and expect it'll break on me in a few short months so i'll put my money in for the replacement one [$4.95 Cdn]

Haven't watched it yet due to watching Sin City as well as doing numerous bank...stuff.
The new packaging isn't bad; a little more compact I think.
I don't like this packaging one bit. It's a mess. Unlike women, DVD box sets should have flat bottoms. Plus, in order to see the "Sixth Season" title on the side you have to keep that plastic shield around it. Boxes like these should be done "Family Guy"/"21 Jump Street" style with mini-cases inside a bigger box. I do give FOX credit for the insert advertising how to get an older style box. I think I laughed more at that insert than any of their shows from last year.

That's good to hear, and I echo Fett's comments about buying this set no matter what they put around it. If it was packaged in the horse-fucker slipcase, though, I'd definitely shell out the 5 bucks for the alternate box.
Yeah the episodes in this are outsandingly awesome. I mean disc one alone is full of Classic simpsons. And they just get better.

I'll admit it. I couldn't start with the first disc. I had to start with "Lemon of Troy."

"Get out here boy, there's a doin's a transpirin'!"

Why they never brought him back I'll never know.

They talked about that on the commentary a bit and nobody really knows why those characters didn't make another appearance. I did learn that Groening despises Database.

Flanders: "Yes, eat all of our shirts!"

It's amazing that out of all the characters that the show has run into the ground they have never really done much more with the Springfield/Shelbyville rivalry. Along with the Shelbyville Homer/Bart twosome they could even bring back Aristotle, the owner of the Shelbyville Power Plant. A lot of untapped potential there.

"I tell you I won't live in a town that robs men of the right to marry their cousins."

Watching Bart's Comet right now....

Moe's reaction to his bar continually getting destroyed in every simulation...
The Fighter jet recognizing Willie as an Iraqi Fighter jet
Homers talking down of Flanders while apologizing to Rod and Todd

All hilarious stuff.

One of the best.

Totally agree, Kreizler.

The packaging is shit but that's not even an issue since the majority of the episodes are ten kinds of classic. Disc 1 alone is worth the cost.
HA, i don't remeber Homer the Clown at all, but the entire effect of the billboard made me fall out of my chair.

That and Lisa on Ice have got to be my favorites on the disk.

One of my favorites. But I think Sideshow Bob Roberts is my all time favorite Bob, maybe episode, right behind whacking day.

MATLOCK EXPRESSWAY!!! There's a great little headline in that episode, one that just tickles me for some reason: Call for Probe in Bob Flap

I am uh, no longer illiterate.

So many great episodes.

See all that stuff in there Homer? That's why your robot never worked.

My quotes might be off, I can't afford the damn disc right now. I'm in some sort of fiduciary trouble.

I confuse a lot of eps from six and seven, I was, uh, ingesting alot of things back then. I can't wait to have Pin Pals on disc.

I love the fact that Homer just continually screams during the limo pullover with Mel Brooks.........that and the clown college where Homer asks Marge a question and she ends her answer with do-do-dodo-dodododododo.

I just love these sets, sad that we're just about past the real classic stuff.
I actually got this for free from a site I've been writing for.....Despite knowing that season 4 through season 10 is the show in its prime, the burning desire to start collecting these sets hasn't hit me. Dont even know why. Possibly because of my aversion to the show in its present form.

Then i get this set, and remember exactly why i fell in love with this show. There are episodes here I haven't seen in years, awesome moments I'd completely forgotten about, and, without hesitation, my favorite Treehouse of Horror episode in the entire series.

Long story short, I'll be there with the rest of you picking up my Marge head first day.

Quick question, though....is there a reason, after I play an episode from its individual set up menu, that the episode number lights up when I press up on the remote?

"This is a most disturbing universe."

I love this season, but I gotta say, this box really does suck, and I was all for it at first. It's flimsy as hell and very unwieldy to deal with.

My favorite alltime Simpsons shot is in this box though, as Homer jumps, DIE HARDesque, from the candy convention. Always cracks me up.

I don't remember, what season was the last good one? I know at some point around seasons 8-10, this show plumetted.
Season 9 was probably the last great season although it had its share of crap (the "other" Skinner, Homer and Burns flee to Cuba, etc.)

Anything after that, don't bother.
Well I started with the first disc, and got Homer emerging from a pile of dead Itchy and Scratchy Robots.

I consider Season 6 the last "great" season, while 7 and 8 are "very good." 9 and 10 was when the slide becames extremely noticeable, with season 10 being average to slightly below average.

That was when the show should have been cancelled.

Oh yeah, the other Skinner. I think that's the exact episode where the show turned. Oh well, I might get 10 just to complete the "family head" clamshell collection, but after that, no more.

Edited because apparently I can't spell "yeah"

I'm gonna buck the trend and say that season 12 is the last one that has a decent list of good episodes. I'm not claiming it's on the level of the "Simpsons in its Prime" stuff but it will probably be the last one that I definitely buy. In season 12 you got the following:

-The one with Kruty's daughter, it's not really that part that I liked but it was a great Fat Tony/Springfield mob episide.
-The one wher Homer is sent to an island resembling that of "The Prisoner."
-The one where Homer gets smarter after having a crayon dislodged from his brain.
-The "Worst Episode Ever" where Comic Book Guy has a heart attack and Bart and Milhouse run his store. I love when they find all of his bootleg videotapes, "Godfather 3: Good Version."
-The Simpsons in Africa.
-The "Trilogy of Error" which seemed a bit like a parody of "Run Lola Run" but I remember liking that one a lot.

That will probably be it for me in terms of buying the seasons.

Interesting how Seasons 9-10 correspond to the period when Matt Groening was prepping Futurama's first season. Futurama was never quite as great as The Simpsons at its creative zenith, but it did focus heavily on the character-based humor that had almost entirely vanished from the former towards the end of the 1990s.

Homer's line "I can't help but noticing that your house smells of feces -- and not just monkey feces!" almost makes up for the rest of the episode.

That's what's depressing about latter-day Simpsons -- every now and then a little flash of the show's former greatness shines through to remind you that it wasn't always so rote and impersonal, and then the overall crappiness re-asserts itself with a vengeance. I'd never imagined that watching the series would become the comedy equivalent of attending one of The Who's reunion concerts.

Is this the one where Homer gets his own rumor spreading website, and keeps getting gassed? If so, yes, this one was good stuff.

I actually consider this the last truly great episode. That monkey warning us that this episode made no sense is the last scream before this show gets dragged off to hell.

That's the one. I'm not even a big fan of "The Prisoner" but I knew enough about it to get the jokes and I really enjoyed that one.

Number 6: Welcome friend, I'm number 6.
Number 15: I'm number 15. What number are you?
Homer: I am not a number! I am a man! And don't you eve... oh wait, I'm number 5. Haha. In your face, number 6!

There's also the bit where Wiggum is giving a press conference and a reporter asks him about Mr. X's claim that the police department is using the electric chair to cook chicken:

Wiggum: Yeah, alright, this press conference is over. It's over Phil! It's over!

Quote:

You may be right about that. There have been jokes since that show that I liked but as for a complete episode "Trilogy of Error" may have been the last hurrah. I love the bit in that one where Wiggum and Lou are going into a place with guns drawn. Lou asks if he can hold his gun sideways because "It looks so cool," to which Wiggum replies "Anything you want birthday boy."

As for the Africa episode, often when the Simpsons go to a foreign land the shows blow. Australia is a big exception to this but the ones in Brazil and England are horrible. The Africa one had some really off the wall stuff. I love when Homer is hungry because of the grocery bagger strike and starts digging around for stuff to eat in the house.

Homer: So hungry. There's gotta be some food left. Gopher jerky? Cream of toast? Where did we get
all this crap?
Marge: Most of it was sent by relatives who couldn't see very well.

It just had a lot of crazy stuff in it, and a lot of monkeys which always help the show. You can tell it was written by John Swartzwelder because his scripts are always a bit more looney than the other ones, and I mean that in a good way. Speaking of my favorite "Simpson's" writer, I've given up on watching this 6th season set in any kind of order so I woke up this morning and popped in "Homer the Great."

"Who holds back the electric car? Who makes Steve Guttenberg a star? We do! We do!"

I always crack up when I see the egg from earlier in that epiosde sitting at the table with the Stonecutters.

What a great season..........

Homer: Kids are so naive. Lisa, when you get to be our age, you'll learn a few things, like when a sign says "Do not feed the bears," man, you better not feed those bears.

I always thought that Groening was off the Simpsons longer than a season or two? I was always under the impression that he oversaw Futurama pretty much full time, and left the Simpsons in the hands of Mike Scully? I do remember reading an interview a long time ago with Groening where he was moaning about the decline in quality of the show and how Fox will never cancel it because it's still a big money spinner for them.

Anyway, I think that Futurama easily matches wits with the Simpsons at its best, and in 4 Seasons it manages to shit over a lot of the Simpsons output.

For me though, the show turned when Homer gets raped by the Panda. It's just a horrible episode full stop, and I believe it was during the peak of the Mike Scully era.
Season Four of FUTURAMA was where it made the leap from being a show that came close to the genius of The Simpsons to completely outdoing it.
I used to refute claims that Futurama was better... but then I realized it IS a better show. Simpsons will always be my favorite, but Futurama just excels it in every department.

The "Jump the Shark" moment for me on the Simpsons was "Saddlesore Galactica" aka the Leprechaun jockeys episode. That was the first time in EVER that I ever watched a Simpsons episode and my first reaction was "What the hell? I think that episode sucked." Then I couldn't help but notice how awful the show had really become.

And count me as a guy who hates the "Prisoner" episode. I didn't get it at all at the time, and I'd wager most of the viewing audience didn't either. The whole episode was a gigantic geek in-joke, which while those are fine as stand-alone gags, you DON'T form an entire episode around them. I thought that was pretty much the writers saying "Fuck it. Who gives a shit if half the audience doesn't get it. I think it's funny."

For the newer episodes, it's not even the stories or jokes that really upset me. It's Homer's character. He's usually just an asshole now with nothing to redeem him. So sad. I think season 10 will be my last.

You are right that they went all out with that episode and that's what I liked about it. They've done so many episodes in which "random supporting character gets a relative" or "random music group comes to Springfield" that the only thing left to do for the show is full on parodies of other shows. The jokes in "The Prisoner" episode worked for me even though I think I only saw the actual "Prisoner" once, but it would not shock me if others didn't enjoy that one. But most of the episode took place in Sprigfield and had the great scene of Homer buying his computer and this line from Kent Brockman:

Kent Brockman: But we must never forget that the real news is on local TV, delivered by real officially lisenced newsmen like me, Kent Brockman. Coming up, how DO they get those dogs to talk on the beer commercials? Cowboy Steve will tell you!

I just watched "Homie the Clown" on this set.

Don Vittorio: You have brought great joy to this old Italian stereotype.
The show certainly turned with the Skully era, it wasn't just that though, it's like the writing staff was either completely changed or was forced into writing a different form of the show, cause a lot of staple of the Simpsons got dropped, some due to tragic loss [Phil Hartmen] and some just for no real reason [Itchy & Scratchy fell off the radar for a long while]

If you want a bunch of epiosdes that just destroy the Simpsons just for the sake of a few sight gags and stuff

- Simpsons go to Africa
- Simpsons go on spring break
- The Prisoner episode
- The jockey episode

Not to mention the changes to the characters like Ned being single, Barney being sober, Milhouse's parents divorcing and other stuff.

It was like once Skully was done with the show the person following had no choice but to continue where he left off and couldn't revert it back into it's old form, even though now they sorta try [Barney is an alcoholic again I do believe]

I think the shows decline is around season 8-9 cause we still have some good episodes like the Radioactive man movie and the boxing Homer one.
