Minor League Ball

I took my family to see the AA Bowie Baysox this weekend, and we had a great time. The small stadium didn't have one bad seat, the food & beverages were cheap, and the park even had a play area with a small putting green, a merry-go-round, & various other amusements for the little ones.

When my kid conked out in the 5th inning, I didn't mind. The tickets were so cheap that leaving early was no sacrifice. I see a lot more minor league ball in my future!

I love going up to Indianapolis to watch the Indians play. Victory Field is by far the best minor league park I've ever been to. I almost interned there as the graphics design specialist but I had to turn it down.

Love getting there 10 minutes before gametime to see what random tickets they have left for the cheap.

Went to see the Rome Braves on Saturday. Game: fun--Heat and Humidity: hellish.

Living in Baltimore I have traveled to the holy Ripkin Stadium on few occassions, and have had a great time. The place is great, and they really do a lot to keep all the kiddies involved in between innings. Don't have any kids myself, but its honeslty fun to see how they all react to the activites. Everyone that works there seems to be having a good time. Great seats, great food, and its fun so see players actually care about the sport. Fuck major league ball.

Our team is crap and it plays in a decrepit park (but hey, they built a new facade and took away hundreds of parking spaces!) so I rarely go see the Sand Gnats. Too bad, too.. I loved watching the Suns play in Jacksonville, and their new place rocks.

With Tampa being Steinbrenners home he built a little miniature Yankee stadium across from the football stadium. Its a great park and I wouldnt be surprised to hear they get better attendance there than at Devil Rays games, if only because this park is actually in Tampa. If the Rays played in the city instead of St. Petersburg I think it would be drawing a larger crowd if only for convienence sake. Its hard to talk yourself into driving 45 minutes into a hellish downtown area with bad parking only to see the team loose(though they are historically a respectable team in the second half of the season).

I'm interested in the business side of minor league ball. I thought that when someone buys a major league team, he's actually buying the whole organization, including all the minor league teams and parks. Since that isn't the case, how does it work? If a major league GM controls who goes where in the system, what does a minor league GM do? Do minor league owners have any power, or are they just along for the ride?

Can anyone recommend any books, articles, or websites that 'splain this? Thanks!

Yeah, I live about 5 minutes from a minor league stadium, and I go see the Milwaukee Brewers play at least once every couple weeks.

It's hard to get a better deal than a minor league ball game.

There are many great books out there on minor league baseball. I strongly recommend 'Prospects', by David Deal. A series of pictures and text, chronicles of visits to minor league parks around America. Also 'Minor Players, Major Dreams' by Brett Mandel, about a season with the Ogden Raptors (Currently the Dodger's affiliate, previously the Brewers). Touching and very readable. I don't know if they're still in print - I'm pretty sure Mandel's book is, but they're both terrific. Many more books out there on minor league baseball, perhaps even of better quality than books about MLB. I suppose the Quixotic nature of a minor leaguer's career lends itself to good writing.

There is a great book called Stolen Season about minor league ball. The author spent a season traveling all over the country going to different minor league games. It's a little older, but good nonetheless.
