What's with Universal's 2-Disc phobia?

They just revealed the artwork for the Big Lebowski "collector's edition" without very much actual special material.

It'd be so easy to do a 2-Disc for this. Where's the coverage of the "Lebowski Fest" craze? That alone would be a least a hour to two hours worth of material.

Universal just seems to REFUSE giving anything more than a 2-Disc set, and when they actually DO make a 2-Disc set, they half-ass it. They're pretty much putting out the worst DVD releases right now.

While I agree that Universal have a 2-disc phobia (why the new FRIGHTENERS disc isn't spread over two to take advantage of the four hour LD doc I don't know), I don't think the Coens always seem especially up for loading their flicks with features. Even the most loaded ones, FARGO and THE MAN WHO WASN'T THERE are relatively thin releases.

Then again, it did take Universal four or so years to do a decent JAWS dvd while releasing six versions of PATCH ADAMS.

I hate that cover art for the new disk. I would have much rathered it to be the cover for the "Collector's Edition" - the one that is coming with the coasters and the bowling towel.

It seems to me that's what they've spared their LEGACY releases for.

Universal sure likes milking the consumer though. How many editions of American Pie and Animal House do we need?

Because the single disc is a dual-sided dual layered one. The doc stands a good chance of being in there.

I agree that Universal is putting out the worst discs at the moment, I just yesterday read the specs for the Big Lebowski after glossing over them......a making of featurette?......production notes?......a fucking filmography!?

Fuck you Universal, this isn't 1998. Actually put stuff on the disc.

Of course these "esoteric tagline" editions and weaksauce Collector Editions that are hitting are just the studios getting DVD's with a more advanced form of copy protection out there.

But then again...Collectors Edition holds no actual meaning anymore.

I always found it odd that most of Universal's early DVD's say "Collectors Edition".

Jurassic Park Films
Mummy Films
Dragonheart
12 Monkeys

How can a DVD be a "Collectors Edition" if that's the only version available?
Well, at the end of the day the ones with extras are supposedly prestige editions, i.e. another fancy way to say "special edition." Universal's SEs have been called collector's editions since day one, I guess cause studios like WB usually use the SE moniker.

Collector's Edition, Special Edition, Platinum Edition, Signature Edition, etc...........................all different words for the same thing. They just like to put different titles on them because they think it makes it more enticing to the buyer. Personally, I could care less what it's called as long as enough respect is shown to the film in terms of special features. The Coen's don't want to participate in a bunch of docus? Fine, but that doesn't mean Universal can't call up Jeff Bridges, John Goodman, Steve Buscemi, Peter Stormare, Julianne Moore and the others to chime in on the film. The just don't feel like making the effort. I bet you anything that if that Frighteners docu from the LD hadn't been in existence, we wouldn't have had squat in terms of the making of the film other than production notes and a stills gallery or something of the like. Lazy, lazy, lazy.

Wait, the DC of The Frighteners is getting a region 1 release? fuck yes! too bad I already bought the original....

I guess we can add the new Mallrats DVD to this list of the 2-disc phobia. Not that I could find one anywhere.

Almost 2006, VHS on it's last leg, and we get more damn "flippers".

Yup, Universal is not doing a good job with it's DVDs. Stingy on the extras and quality problems. I have had to get another copy of "Casino" because of problems with the first.
Frankly, what Warner's is doing with it's library (Which includes most of the Great MGM stuff since the Turner/Warner merger) makes Universal look like shit.
