Hulk: Ultimate Destruction

Stupidly entertaining. Similar set-up to the Spider-Man 2 game - free roaming map with challenge missions and story missions dotted around, and you cash in your points to upgrade your moves - but it's yet to hit that bump in the road where you run out of things to do.

For one thing, smashing shit up has a much longer amusement factor than swinging around. For another, the challenges are varied and really good fun. None of this "catch a kids balloon" crap here. There are checkpoint races, of course, but you can also try to kick field goals with cars, play baseball with soldiers dropping from a helicopter or play crosstown golf with a giant golf ball.

Hulk moves just like he should. The animation is great - they've lifted little mannerisms from the film, such as the way he jumps and lands, and he's got a real sense of weight and power to him. Seeing the ground crack and crumble every time you land is just great.

The first boss battle - against Ron Perlman as The Abomination - is pretty nifty. Nothing innovative, it's a straight slugfest, but it really feels like a super-powered punch-up. Lots of hammering each other across the arena and demolishing scenery.

I was worried that the game might be too easy, but they've pitched it just about right. You can take out one tank, or one helicopter, without breaking a sweat - but they gang up on you if you stay in one place too long, so you're forced to fight them on the run or you just get pummeled with rockets and missiles.

There's nothing to it that you won't have seen in other games - lots of pick ups and secrets, funny cheat codes, etc - but I'm having a blast with it all the same. It's a real Hulk game. Very cathartic.

Catching missles, only to throw them back is fucking awesome. As is the hammer throw with tanks. Plus, this one time, I picked up a civilian, ran and jumped my way through the city to his screams of terror, only to place him gently on the ground and pat him on the head.

I then punted him 200 yards down the road.

I'm dying to play this.

Especially since Ultimate Spider-Man apparently dumped the controlled webslinging set-up from Spider-Man 2--which was the one thing everybody really liked about that game in the first place, for Christ's sake!--this is going to provide my superhero fix for the year. Glad to hear it's solid.

Too early to say. I'm digging it a bunch, but haven't really played it long enough to definitely say "purchase" with any authority. Based on the fun I've had so far, I wouldn't be pissed to have paid full price for it. But on the other hand, there may yet be a momentum-killing mission (like the Statue of Liberty one in Spider-Man 2) that stops it dead.

I love how you can grab a lamppost, and use it to club soldiers into the distance - with their little vapour trails marking their trajectory over the city.

It's a bit weird that Hulk can run up skyscrapers (like, all the way up) but that's just me being fussy. I do like the way he grabs buildings as he falls, gouging chunks out of the wall until he comes to a stop.

When do you get to unlock those? I've got the missile punch-back move, so I'm guessing these are from Chapter 3?
I'm dying to play this as well. Review I read kinda scaled back my anticipation but i'll be renting or buying this soon.
You get the swing the Tanks pretty late in the game I think. I'm sure you unlock it just before you fight General Ross.

Also, there's nothing better than doing a elbow drop from the top of a skyscraper.

Yeah, right after the third boss. All the badass moves get opened there, like the wrecking ball, grappling onto bigger than Hulk sized enemies and beating the fuck out of their eyes, the hammer throw and the grapple onto helicopters and drop kick them into other enemies move. Hells yes.

As for rental vs. buy, it's fun as shit, but I have a feeling I've almost beat it. I hear there's some cool mode that opens after you beat it, but I'll just wait until it hits the bargain bin. Because I'm a cheap bastard.

I love grappling the helicopters. I love how the pilot freaks out as Hulk drags the whole thing down to the ground or dropkicks it into his buddies.

The controlled webslinging is not only in USM but is actually improved. Stupid EGM...

On topic: Bought this game 2 days ago and am still having fun re-enacting King Kong's rampage through NY in between missions..

Yeah, I just found this out too. Not sure why that stupid rumor gained so much strength, but the latest batch of videos on IGN clearly show freeform webslinging. Which is fucking sweet.
I'd say Hulk is more of a rental for now, but I might pick it up when its $20. No real replay value after all the side missions are cleared. The environments could have used way more variety and I wish every building could be destroyed for some Syndicate: Wars type of action, but in the end the cool moves make the game way more fun than it has any right to be.

Surfing a smashed bus through heavy traffic is pretty damn sweet.

Silly question from a guy who doesn't read many comics:

Is the Hulk a bad guy?

I mean, it seems like all I ever see him doing is murdering troops and police officers by the dozen...
This is another one of those times when I relaly shouldn't take the question seriously, right? Fuck it, I can't help myself:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Incredible_Hulk

Quote:
Although the Hulk is classified as a superhero, he and Banner share a Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde-like relationship. In his most well-known incarnation, the Hulk has little intelligence or self-control and can cause great destruction. As a result, he has been hunted by the military and other superheroes and Banner considers the Hulk a curse.

He's a bit like Godzilla. Sometimes he's good, if there's a bigger, meaner monster to fight. But by virtue of his condition, he's also responsible for traditional bad guy destruction.

I guess it's easy to see how they could make the mistake about the webslinging in Ultimate Spider-Man. I recently saw the game being played in person, and the employee playing it was really knowledgeable about the game and Ultimate Spider-Man in general. The deal is, in this game, Spider-Man only swings with his right hand. The reason for this makes sense, though: he's right handed, and he's really new to the whole superhero thing, so he's inexperienced and not fully comfortable with his powers yet. You're right though, webswinging in general has been improved and it looks even more fluid than in Spider-Man 2.

The game is fucking gorgeous, by the way. You can't fully appreciate the Venom model until you've seen it on a TV screen in front of you. The "comic shading" technique they've used is phenominal.

Anyway, getting back on subject, how does this game stack up in the inevitable comparisons to Spider-Man 2? As someone who still plays Spider-Man 2 constantly since the week it came out, and never gets bored of doing random missions, is this a game I can safely pick up and enjoy on the same level, for the same length of time?
anyone hear how the game differs across platforms expecially GC and Xbox?
Every time I load up my XBox version, it says "Alex Eckhoff eats dick". I've returned it 3 times, and it keeps doing it. The Gamecube copy, however, says "Alex Eckhoff is teh suck." So, Alex, I'd say the Gamecube one will be nicer to you.

It's way better than Spidey 2. There are more moves to unlock, and the moves are actually useful and easy to pull off. The challenge missions are more varied, and there are more of them. As you unlock new powers, new challenge missions open up for you to try them in. And more than that, the simple fact is that rampaging around a city, or the desert, smashing things, grabbing things, leaping 100 feet in the air, coming back to Earth with an almighty crunch while pedestrians scream and cars veer out of your path is all more fun than webslinging.

I played the shit outta this game over the long weekend. Tons of big green fun. I'm probably about 2/3rds finished with the story stuff (I'm fighting that bitch Mercy right now), but I keep getting sidetracked with just running around causing rampant destruction and ripping through response teams.

Favorite: the "Critical Mass" double-fisted ground pound, that sends out a slow-motion shockwave that blows away everything in a city block.

Handy hint: If you start one of the challenge missions where the clock counts up rather than down, take advantage of it and smash as much stuff as you can find. The Strike Teams don't get called out during challenges, so it's a useful way of adding to your Smash Points total without risk. Not the fastest way of doing it, but certainly the safest.

Of course, once you've got the various tank/chopper/Hulkbuster grapple moves, you can go nuts - and get loads of Smash Points for each team you wipe out. Tackle them one enemy at a time, and use the power-ups dropped after they explode to push you into Critical Mass mode before taking on the next enemy.

It's weird that this is almost the polar opposite of Spidey 2 for me. In Spider-Man, I loved the story missions but hated the bonus missions, but here the situation is totally reversed. Rampaging through town and bouncing from skyscrapers is a blast, and I loved the hell out of almost all the minigames--I must have wasted over an hour on the "Don't touch the ground" missions alone--but the actual story missions just left me bored and frustrated.

When the enemies get fast and mobile (like the jetpack troopers or the Harrier jets), the game's poor lock-on camera just goes haywire, and too many of the missions devolve into either getting your ass clobbered by generic robots or bouncing to safety while everybody and his goddamn brother takes potshots at your back. In the end, I pretty much abandoned the story missions and just concentrated on unlocking moves and rampaging through the city.

A fun game--and a HUGE improvement over the last Hulk game, obviously--but I'm glad I rented instead of buying. Maybe it's the Spidey geek in me, but I still prefer webslinging over Hulk's...err, Hulk-bouncing, I guess.

Still, Marvel might be falling apart onscreen and in the theaters, but it's nice to see their video game winning streak continue. Between this, Ultimate Spidey, X-Men 2 and the Marvel MMPORPG for the Xbox 360, they're finally putting their properties to good use.

anyone still playing/enjoying this. I am considering giving it a chance this weekend.

I just found out that the game will do 720p, which is a big plus.
I rented it Friday at BBuster. Very fun and stress-relieving. I just don't get tired of the "Batter Up" mini game. Any hints from anyone as to how to him the soldiers further? I can't get them past 290 yards/ft (whichever).

My 4-year-old son also loves playing it. I just put him in the "simulation" at the start of the game and let him go crazy. He loves picking up the cows and throwing them at the soldiers.

Okay, I picked up this and We Heart Katamari yesterday after trading in USM and a bunch of other games. So far, I'm having a blast, but I'm getting a bit frustrated with one of the early story missions. "Protect and Serve", where you have to defend a building from an endless onslaught of tanks for 4 minutes or so. I can make it to 30 seconds left, but I'm obviously not doing something right, because they always destroy the building and I fail the mission. Does anyone remember this one? Any tips?
You know you have to make Steel Fists out of nearby cars, right?
Yeah, I figured that out on my second try at the mission. I think I just need more practice fighting multiple enemies at a time. I was wondering if there was some trick to the mission that I was missing, or if I just needed to slug it out and practice until I win.
I don't think so. Just keep making Steel Fists throughout the mission (once you lose one of the Fists, discard the other and create a new pair, since you're only doing half the damage) and try to attack the tanks in the order they arrive, since they have a delay before they start firing.
I think the mistake I'm making is trying to attack those first few tanks at a distance by chucking shit at them. Thanks for the tips.
Beat the mission after a few more times, and realizing that I needed to focus all my attacks on the darker green tanks, rather than the more beige ones that were attacking me.
I bought this on the weekend. I think it's great, though sometimes it's frustrating. Getting the right Smash moves makes things so much easier.

With improved air strike you can have crazy arial battles with the Hulkbusters.
Just got this two weeks ago out of the bargain bin for $10 and it's still a blast to play. If there's ever a game that deserves a next generation remake or sequel, it's this one. One of the coolest things about this game is after you beat it, you can unlock "Savage Banner" which is Bruce Banner with Hulk powers. Plus you can replay the game with all the moves you bought intact. Definitely worth a purchase!

If you have a 360, it's one of the few backwards-compatible OXBOX games on it.
