Lost.....that Good?

I got to work today and everybody was a buzz on the 1st season of lost out on dvd. Everybody keeps asking if i am buying it , and when I tell them I don't think so, I've never seen any of the episodes they give me some crazy look and give me their best rundown of the show and try to get me to go and purchase the damn thing. I have no problem going out and buying but i want to know is it really worth what everybody here at the office and reviews i have seen on the net have to say about it. I trust the CHUD fans to shoot it to me straight. So what do ya think?

I've never seen it myself but I can't think of any single one person who had anythign bad to say about it. The people here at work who watched it watched it RELIGIOUSLY and every Thursday morning all I heard all day long was "Lost." So, maybe it's worth checking out - my only fear is it being able to live up to the TREMENDOUS amount of hype that's preceeded it.

I could never get into it. The whole flashback thing lost me every time they did it, and they did a lot of flashbacks.

I loved the show. I thought it dragged a bit in the middle and didn't resolve much in the way of mysteries, but I still enjoyed it quite a bit. Check out Devin's Review on the main page. It's a good read and might make you feel better about checking out the show on DVD. I'll be surprised if you aren't hooked after watching the 2 hour pilot episode. Even if you aren't hooked by then, give it till the episode titled "Walkabout." One of the best episodes I have seen on TV.

If you ask me wait a bit on the "Lost" DVD and pick up the 3rd season of "21 Jump Street" which was also released today. It's got Richard Grieco and everything!

I say bad things about it. It has a really compelling and open-ended premise and it had a promising start. Halfway through the season, however, it really lost its way. It's dug itself an inescapable whole with its flashback structure.

You'll dig it if you like soap operas. There are so many characters to keep track of that I couldn't really get into any of the individual threads. I thought it was pretty boring, but I'm not really the target audience for appointment television. I love the Shield, but I still end up missing over half of the episodes.

I sure hope you didn't miss the one with Carl Weathers, because that was AWESOME!

You, my friend, are the perfect candidate for Tivo or some other DVR. I like to record shows like Lost and The Shield during the week and catch up on an episode or two on the weekends.

Some numbers from the CHUD message board:

Season 1 LOST thread:

2500+ posts

That should say something about the popularity of LOST here on the boards.

8:00 in: That's a fucked up 8 minutes.

First commercial break: What the fuck? Did they land on the island at the end of Deep Rising?!

I've only seen the two hour pilot, and that's exactly what I thought. I expected Treat Williams to come running out of the woods.

I lost interest in the show about halfway through. Devin's point in his review that stretching 22 episodes of TV out over half a year seemed to hurt it intrigued me, and I'd always planned to pick it up on DVD.

"Walkabout" is one of my favorite episodes of television ever.

I love Lost.

The show is completely great, and I have a feeling the second season will be even better.

So if I were you, I'd jump on the bandwagon as soon as possible.

haha, 15 hours out of the last 48 . . . guessing you are into it?

And what is ep 15, gimme a reminder so i can know what youre talking about (although im guessing its the disappearance/reappearance of a certain character(s)).

Stick with it, there are a few incredible episodes at the end of the season... my favorite (not including the finale) is probably the second Locke-centric episode, "Deus Ex Machina" . . . oh, and "Numbers" is pretty great, too.

Sorry to double-post but this is a seperate subject entirely.

I really envy you guys being able to experience the show for the first time in large chunks.

Could you tell me how you guys like the show, those who are just seeing it for the first time now on dvd ?

Thanks.

I got really into the characters and the subplots, and the music, although reptetive later on was really good. I went from hating certain characters [Jin, Boone, Hurley] to liking them during the finale....the whole hatch mystery, although looong drawn out was really good, especially after watching that season 2 teaser.

Episode 15 is when [Spoilers]: Claire returns to the group not knowing what the hell happened

i'll probably get the dvd. i have caught a few episodes but i think its one of those shows where you get more out of it if you watch all the episodes in a row.

My fiancee just picked up the DVD set and, as she wants to be prepared for the second season's start, we've been on a steady diet of Lost (in and around football). Neither one of us had seen the show before and we've pretty much avoided anything that might contain a spoiler, so it's all new to us. The show is absolutely amazing. We just watched "House of the Rising Sun"... great, great stuff. My only concern is that the show might be riding the Twin Peaks bullet train, i.e. an intriguing story with engaging characters and multiple mysteries that crashes and burns before all of those mysteries can be satisfactorily resolved. I hope not, but I wouldn't be surprised as I seem to recall Dev saying in his review that the writers are making alot of it up as they go.

I missed the show's first season. I hate missing episodes of shows like this, and if I miss one, I quit. Thank God for DVD to put these out pretty quickly.

I love this show, and I'm really happy I own it. To me, I'm fine with the mystery taking its time. It's not about that. For me, it's about the characters. The show will explain itself in due time, and I'm quite certain it won't live up to my expectations anyway, so I'm just enjoying the ride.

Awesome show, awesome DVD.

I missed the first episode so I never got into it on it's first run. Now, having seen all the reruns save for the season finale tonight I can definitely say that this was the best show on broadcast television this past season.

My wife and I after watching an episode feel the great need to watch another as soon as possible. I don't understand how you people could stand the weeks where there was no new epsiode or <shudder> a break of three or four weeks.

I'll find out though.

When watching multiple episodes back to back its amazing how well each one blends into the next.
A few misfires, but overall it held up well considering the substantial hype. Surprisingly enjoyed the flashbacks. Not sure if it will hold up over the second season, however.
Yeah, the show's wild. There's a lot of filler over the stretch of a 22 ep season, but there are moments in this show that will kick your ass.

For fun, I point you to this Penny Arcade comic, detailing Gabe's love of the show. If you're not a fan of PA, you should get a laugh anyway.

Maybe a chuckle...

So I got my DVD from CHUD in the mail yesterday (on the day of the season two premiere!) and this is such a must-own DVD, not only because the show is entertaining but because of all the little details scattered throughout. And Devin's right in that the works much better in a continuous viewing block and episodes like "Homecoming" and "Outlaws" didn't seem as much like filler as they did before.
