Years back when I used to be really into Star Wars, I would frequent the action figure collecting sites to see what was coming up. They were full of guys complaining that Hasbro didn't give them enough obscure characters and background aliens, and instead kept churning out endless Luke Skywalkers and Han Solos.
See, what a lot of these guys didn't realize is that the Lukes and Hans being sold to the kids was where the vast majority of the business was coming from. They had to keep making those characters because they sold the best and in fact those sales were the only way to justify producing Hammerheads and Nute Gunrays.
In other words, Hasbro had to keep producing their most popular products continually to keep sales up, but would occasionally change packaging or pricing to keep their retail space looking fresh. And even though a lot of the fans compulsively bought the re-packaged goods anyway, they would continually bitch and moan about how the company was trying to screw them over.
In short, a lot of DVD enthusiasts are just like those guys.
