The Hot Rock

I caught this on TV the other day and found it to be a great little caper movie. One of Redford's more underrated films alongside 'Sneakers'. I was surprised it was directed by Peter Yates who also directed 'Bullitt'. I read Robert Redford didn't like this film as Yates didn't 'get' american humor but I thought the humor was nicely played.

The movie was based on a Donald E Westlake and it shows, the idea of one crime being committed and more crimes follow as a result of that one crime, like they're cursed. The script was written by William Goldman which was also a surprise.

Redford aside, who puts in a nicely cool performance as 'Dortmunder', the rest of the cast were all pretty good. George Segal is suitably neurotic as Dortmunder's brother-in-law, Al Leibman, Moses Gunn and Zero Mostel all put in pretty good performances. Quincy Jones also adds something to the movie.

The last heist is amazingly tense.

Thanks for the tip. I just rewatched THE STING and was looking for some more cool Redford.

Funnily enough, The Sting came on right after, another classic film.

On what channel? I've been dying to see The Hot Rock since I read the book, but haven't been able to find a decent copy. And The Sting just kicks ass.

Fox classics. They also show TV shows like Gunsmoke and The Rockford Files.

The Hot Rock is playing on Netflix Instant right now. Decided to watch it in honor of Peter Yates. Fun little heist movie. Sort of the antithesis of Leverage (but I think fans of that show will like this a lot).

The final heist is a bit nerve wracking with a pretty great ending.

Quincy Jones score is fantastic.
