I caught this on TV the other day and found it to be a great little caper movie. One of Redford's more underrated films alongside 'Sneakers'. I was surprised it was directed by Peter Yates who also directed 'Bullitt'. I read Robert Redford didn't like this film as Yates didn't 'get' american humor but I thought the humor was nicely played.
The movie was based on a Donald E Westlake and it shows, the idea of one crime being committed and more crimes follow as a result of that one crime, like they're cursed. The script was written by William Goldman which was also a surprise.
Redford aside, who puts in a nicely cool performance as 'Dortmunder', the rest of the cast were all pretty good. George Segal is suitably neurotic as Dortmunder's brother-in-law, Al Leibman, Moses Gunn and Zero Mostel all put in pretty good performances. Quincy Jones also adds something to the movie.
The last heist is amazingly tense.
