Too much damn plastic in packaging!

Why are some DVDs packaged with layers and layers of plastic, sticky bar codes, and adhesive that it makes opening one of 'em a pain in my beautiful ass? What cracks me up are the DVDs that have a box cover in plastic AND the DVD itself in the cover all plastered up too. What's the logic here? One coating of plastic should be enough, no?

One of my most annoying endeavors occurred when I bought the SCREAM box set. For some reason, they saw it fit to put plastic on each and every DVD in the box. I'm just so happy my ELM STREET set of DVDs were already user-friendly right out of the box! I can't imagine trying to open 8 DVDs of hard-pressed packaging in a row. Ugh.

You ever hear of a thing called thwarting shoplifters? That's predominantly, I believe, why you get frustrated with the plastic and the two little prong thingies (by proxy, I suppose) at the edge of each Armary case.

But really, it's not that big a deal.

It's not a big deal, of course, but it's an annoyance that just won't seem to go away.

I like to sit with my purchases and cut all the seals and wrapping off them at one time, making a big ball out of the security strips and wrappers. I cut the security stickers down the seam of the case all the way around, then pull the case open and remove each half of the sticker without leaving glue on the outside. It's one of my favorite things to do on the weekend.

What I don't like is the extra sticky glue the used DVD store near me uses. I buy lots of previously rented movies to save some money, but their damn stickers don't come off easy. I have to get out the Goo Gone for those. I don't file my discs without cleaning all the labels off. About half the time I throw away the cardboard sleeves, if the artwork is the same as the keep case. The cardboard just gets scuffed up over time.

Yeah I make the wrapper balls too. It reminds me of Pee-Wee's Aluminum Foil Ball.

Not to mention damaging the edge of the cover art if it is sticking out when you rip off the security strip. I get weird looks in the store when I flip through copies of DVDs searching for the one that has the cover art completely under the plastic sleeve. If the top or bottom edge is sticking out, I won't buy it. This is not possible when buying through the web, though. My Edward Scissorhands DVD has a long strip of the cover torn off it where the sticker was peeled off.

And, what's with the plastic wrapper sticking to the spine of DVDs? It's like the wrapper is melted onto the sleeve of the case for some reason. Heat or pressure must be the culprit.

If you can't tell yet, I have a very pretty collection. I call her Charlene. She's my baby.
