E. Elias Merhige's BEGOTTEN

Has anyone else seen this? I guess it could be considered a horror film. The opening is certainly terrifying enough, and is bound to give me nightmares forever, as a man disembowles himself slowly with a straight razor. Like the rest of the film, this is shot in super-grainy, bleached out black and white, and the man appears to be wearing to types of masks. The credits told me that it's God. Hm.

Anyway, it's clear Merhige's been watching some FANDO Y LIS, as this is one of the strangest little films you'll ever seen. Merhige went on to get a plum gig doing SHADOW OF THE VAMPIRE when producer Nicolas Cage (yep, that one) was shown BEGOTTEN by Crispin Glover (of course). While SHADOW has geunine menace, there's a lot of good stuff to be found in SUSPECT ZERO (at least in the first half), as Merhige clearly knows how to enrich and explore deep themes in the most pedestrian of narratives. I guess I'd have to pigeonhole him into a horror director, as his films have explored some very horrific material.

Anyway, have you seen BEGOTTEN? What did you think? And what do you think of Merhige's body of work?

I saw it based on its noteriety and found it to be as shate and self-serving as most of his stuff.

I have a terrible cold and presumably am running a fever. I was convinced for several minutes that this thread was about Moon For The Misbegotten.
