Castel of Blood aka Danse Macabre
B&W movie about a Poe-era London gentleman who accepts a wager to spend all night till dawn in a haunted mansion. Hilarity ensues. Great B&W evokes Universal classics like Dracula, but with avant garde film & editing techniques, subtle and surreal and builds to a total freakout finale. The last 10 minutes of this movie scared me bad when I was a kid.

--did Kubrick life the menacing Barbara Steele handholding ghost couple and ballroom dancing out of nowhere ghosts for his own haunted house epic The Shining?
--did the distributors who renamed Romero's movie "night of the living dead" (instead of whatever he had called it when he gave it to them) lift that from the end of this movie, when Poe's friend who made the bet with the unfortunate sucker hanging on the gate cold pimps the bills from the stillwarm corpse and says Pity he didnt survive "the Night of the Dead"
are there any earlier movies than this one where somebody has to stay the night in a haunted mansion to get what they got coming?
