An affectionate piece, Strax, but it didn't make me reconsider my opinion of Hickox (which is one of disinterest). I find his work pedestrian. I can still recall eagerly anticipating the release of Waxwork. The Fango coverage promised me a film that would be everything the recently released Monster Squad wasn't. A truly scary and hardcore monster mash. I was so disapponited by it's blandness.
"...he's never capitalized on the obvious proficiency he has for genre productions."
The only time I've seen this proficiency demonstrated was in Sundown. If I am to have a favorite Hickox movie, that would be it. But even there he was assisted by a clever script and a fine cast of actors (not the least of which were the one-two punch of Bruce Campbell and the delicious Deborah Foreman).
Otherwise his horror endeavors do not bear any unique stamp like that of his B flick peers.
But, hey, at least he's not Brian Yuzna.
