So the numbers are in and I'll be the first to admit that $4.9 million is not an epic total for MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE in its first weekend. Now of course all the haters are gonna rip on the film and try to explain why it didn't do as well as all the Eterniacoats had hoped it would. I'm sure the claim will be made that because the Eterniacoats acted like fools during the film's development that it turned others off but I don't think that's what happened. The reason for its financial performance is simple, it had to open against STAKEOUT in its first weekend and THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS is still going strong after its 2nd weekend.
But I really don't care about the amount of money the film made. When the TV series ended I thought that was it. So to hear a couple years later that a live action film would be made and be shown on the big screen I damn near shit my pants. Maybe the characters weren't exactly as I remembered them but so what, their heart was in the right place. Maybe the marketing campaign could have done a better job of trying to attract people who were not familiar with the show but there's only so much you can do with this type of sci-fi/fantasy material. You can't force people to get on board what is easily the STAR WARS of the 80's.
The second weekend will be key, so hopefully the good word of mouth I've been hearing will help MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE build on its audience. I bet after domestic, foreign grosses, and VHS rentals the film will make a profit for Warner Brothers. Who knows? Maybe Skeletor will be back as he promised. There are so many stories left to be told...
So to those of you who will keep on slamming the fans of the franchise I will kindly say this: Good journey, good journey to all of you.
