Don't judge MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE by its weekend take at the Box Office!

So the numbers are in and I'll be the first to admit that $4.9 million is not an epic total for MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE in its first weekend. Now of course all the haters are gonna rip on the film and try to explain why it didn't do as well as all the Eterniacoats had hoped it would. I'm sure the claim will be made that because the Eterniacoats acted like fools during the film's development that it turned others off but I don't think that's what happened. The reason for its financial performance is simple, it had to open against STAKEOUT in its first weekend and THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS is still going strong after its 2nd weekend.

But I really don't care about the amount of money the film made. When the TV series ended I thought that was it. So to hear a couple years later that a live action film would be made and be shown on the big screen I damn near shit my pants. Maybe the characters weren't exactly as I remembered them but so what, their heart was in the right place. Maybe the marketing campaign could have done a better job of trying to attract people who were not familiar with the show but there's only so much you can do with this type of sci-fi/fantasy material. You can't force people to get on board what is easily the STAR WARS of the 80's.

The second weekend will be key, so hopefully the good word of mouth I've been hearing will help MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE build on its audience. I bet after domestic, foreign grosses, and VHS rentals the film will make a profit for Warner Brothers. Who knows? Maybe Skeletor will be back as he promised. There are so many stories left to be told...

So to those of you who will keep on slamming the fans of the franchise I will kindly say this: Good journey, good journey to all of you.

With Moltisanti, no joke is too old or dead to fuck into submission.

MotU

I thought it sucked. But I like Frank in "Kitchen Confidential".

Haven't seen "Serenity" though, there were some geeks in front of the theater burning Jodie Foster in effigy and that just seemed wrong so I decided to see "Flightplan" as a show of support for poor Jodie. Also, geeks and most of geek society scares me.

Agreed on Gwildor, when the footage of him was first shown at the recent MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE fanfest I knew he'd be a classic MOTU character. But if the general public doesn't want to see a troll-like creature eat beef ribs then that's their problem, I guess "middle America" just isn't ready for that type of stuff.

I blame Cannon. They completely botched the advertising campaign. I live in Kansas and didn't see the trailer before Space Camp.

I thought this was about a remake of Masters of the Universe and I was really pissed I hadn't heard about it and missed seeing it this weekend.

oh, and the movies failing was making a hero the guy who killed Apollo Creed and took steroids to bash Rocky's skull in, bad form.

edit. It would have made more money if they cast Stallone as He-Man and gave him 12 Inch boots to make him seem taller.

Yeah, I know what you mean. Except in my case, I literally shit my pants. To be fair, I was four. No, it wasn't until this, combined with the announcement of the Garbage Pail Kids movie, that I was able to satisfactorily control my bowels in response to such life-changing films.

While I don't shit my pants when I think of this film today, I'll cop to the fact that I get a slight erection when I think of the chick that played Teela. If you ask me she was even more of a looker than the young Courtney Cox.

Tom Paris makes this film! He is sooo perfect in the role and his acting is amazing, kind of like a young Harison Ford. I Really belived he wanted to play in his band at the high school gig.

I know its to soon for casting the sequal but Joss Whedon should direct, and for a fantasy casting:-

Nicolas Brendon as Triklops
Sarah Michelle Geller as Skelitor
James Masters as Roboto

come on guys this will rock!

I'm not an expert on the various Whedon stable of actors but I know Ron Glass from "Barney Miller" and he's in SERENITY. He'd make for a bitchin' Man-At-Arms.
