The 5 Best Movie Posters of 2005

There are still a few flicks which have yet to show us the goods (I'm looking at you, Kong), but so far, here's who I would put up:

Right now, this is the one to beat:

I just think this poster conveys the perfect amount of both of menace and glee:

The winner for most effective poster I would never want to own:

I think Devin summed it up best in describing how this poster wonderfully conveys shattered normality by taking what would normally be a portrait and severing it with a gun in the foreground:

I enjoy the simplicity and enjoy the tagline even more:

And nobody's gone apeshit about Kong?

Yeah, that Walk the Line poster is pretty great.

As for T_M's choices, I gotta disagree with him on his first three because

1. Syriana is good but just a little too blatent with the ripping away of the mouth and eyes.
2. I actually hadn't seen this version before, but I still have the same problem with it in that it makes Murrow looks more like a crooner than a newscaster.
3. For a film that looks like it has enough visual flair to destroy all your synapses, it's an awfully plain poster. I they were going to do a shot like that, they could have spiced it up by making it look like a polaroid and then tossing it in with the imagery used in the film like the buffalo-coin, the money, the domino pendant, etc.

A) if you're talking about this poster, I'm not sure it's official. I'm not saying it's bad, but I don't know if Universal made it or just some fan.

B) if you're talking about the new image, well first that's not a poster (at least not yet anyway). If they do make it into a poster, I still think it's an "almost" effort.

I'm going with:

Syriana
A History of Violence
Walk the Line
Lord of War
Everything Is Illuminated
A Scanner Darkly

Shit, that's six.

I also like:

Oh and this:

but mainly for the tagline.

So I'll say:
History of Violence
Batman Begins International
Jarhead
I Walk the Line
Save this spot for the real Kong poster

and the others I posted are good runners up.

Alright, Capt, here are my problems with your choices (I know this is all aesthetic judgement, but I don't want this to be a stupid list thread. I want some discussion!):

With the Batman Begins poster, first, I think this one is more effective:

It's much more dynamic. The poster you picked has Batman just sort of standing whereas the one pictured here seems more alive in expression and posture. Also, I think your Batman poster uses too many greys. If, they're going to go with darker colors contrasted with an overhead light, they should go for a higher contrast.

As for the New World poster, well, look for yourself:

Oh, and not to be a stickler but two things:

1) The name of the film is "Walk the Line", no "I" like the song.

2) V for Vendetta was pushed back to 2006, but I agree that it's a great poster.

You LOSE.

Points taken Matt. I don't recall seeing that particular BB poster, it is a better one. And any similarity to the Two Towers poster can't be all bad but as I said it is a runner up.
That second Batman poster is better I think, like you said, because of the circular motion
of the group of bats makes it very dynamic, but they are very fake looking.

And even though it looks like a rip-off I think The New World's poster is better.

I agree with what you said earlier about Murrow looking like a crooner and Domino's
poster being underwhelming, but I love the fact that Syriana's artwork did not take
the ensemble approach ala Traffic which could have easily worked. The colors are bold
and the style is striking.

And I don't know why, but I hatehatehate that Charlie and the Chololate Factory poster.
Oh, man! I thought the same thing when I saw that "New World" poster. It took me a second but I thought "I'd seen that image before.." Entertainment Weekly runs a bit every once and a while about how movie posters copy each other. That would be a good one, as would the poster for "The Greatest Game Ever Played" (new Bill Paxton directed golf flick) compared to "Dead Poets Society".

Overall I've felt this year has been pretty lackluster as to posters I consider exciting and worthy of display. "Walk the Line", "Batman Begins" and "Lord of War" have been the best ones I've seen so far. Unfortunately "War of the Worlds" and some of the other big summer movies' posters dissapointed.

I've always been interested in learning how these are designed, who does it and how to get involved. What an awesome job it could be.

I just got my hands on a Lord of War poster. Some great detailing throughout that thing. Will probably get the framing treatment in my office.

Okay, now for my defense:

1. I like the fact that it's blatant. It's chaotic, and while it doesn't exactly "show" the premise, it certainly gives a sense about what we're to expect.

2. Perhaps, but I think it's the black and white that got to me. Not to mention the lines.

3. Okay, I'll give you this one. At first, I liked it; now the more I look at it it does seem a little "plain". I suppose it was the fact that instead of "floating heads" it just seemed somewhat more natural.

BTW, Great topic. I like your criticisms.

I'm going to have to disagree with the "Charlie" poster though. While it certainly is better than the final version of the poster, Wonka seems artificial - smacked onto a backdrop and not exactly making an impact to my eyes. I don't see the "menace".

It's menacing because despite all these colors, Wonka's face obscured by the brim of his hat. Everything in this poster is bright colors, but why won't he look us in the eye? What is he hiding? The fact that his face is a pale white also doesn't make sense. Why doesn't he look as vibrant as his surroundings? All the colors are enticing, but if we look closely, we see that is a disguise for the centerpiece of the poster.

Nice, i was gonna post that Walk the Line one when i saw this thread.

Although it says Unleashed rather than the infinately better Danny The Dog, i think this one is great:

And i'm a bit of a fan of this one too:

And I SO want that new Kong image to be the new poster.
That Harry Potter one is really weak, IMO.
On the contrary, that Potter teaser's the best one they've had so far. Goblet of Fire is my favorite book in the series, and that image sums up perfectly the drastic change in tone that things take in it, and in the film.

The one sheet, however....not so much.

Crow, those are both excellent choices. In fact, I withdrawn my nomination of Jarhead and replace it with Constantine.
Yeah, V For Vendetta and A Scanner Darkly have both been pushed back to Spring 2006.

And this is a great topic.
Five movies with grea posters.. my pick are:

Spider Man
LOTR
Batman
Fantastic Four
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
Here are some nice runner-ups I found on
http://www.impawards.com/2005/standard.html

I like 'em for all different reasons - color, composition,
clean vs. rough & edgy design, typography, what they
communicate about the film, etc.

I don't want to do this all night so just agree that it looks like Affleck on the veranda after he's boned JLo.
In the Potter Teaser needs not to be centered, in my top 5 is the Harry character poster

and then the other would be
Lord of War
Batman Begins
Narnia

like it more for the work and what it implies Comic Con POC2
post #33 of 40
I'll second the Narnia poster. That's been my desktop wallpaper for a couple months now, and I definitely think it's one of the best movie posters of the year.
That "All The King's Men" poster is fucking great.
I can't believe i am the only person in the world who thinks those BATMAN BEGINS posters all suck. They're just boring.

You're not. I even like the movie. When a movie I enjoy (sucky or not,) has a sucky poster, it sucks all the more.
Yeah, when the Batman Begins posters were coming out one by one, I was hoping we'd finally get a good one after every shitty one. But to no avail. I didn't even like the international one a lot of people raved about.

And All The King's Men has been pushed back to 2006 as well. So that poster's not counting!
I thought the international Doom poster was pretty good.

But yeah, Lord of War. Great poster. Good choice
post #39 of 40
I thought this Kong poster was pretty nifty – I don't know if it's even official, but it's kind of funny that
they spelled Adrien Brody's name wrong. (I guess that answers my official question)

It would be a lot better without that horrible lens flare.
