THE ROEPER REPORT FOR 10/18/05

On the most recent edition of "Ebert and Roeper" once again Richard Roeper proved that he's no slouch when it comes to talkin' movies.

-Roeper is pleased with Cameron Crowe's ability to take territory he has covered before and make it seem original in ELIZABETHTOWN.

-He described WHERE THE TRUTH LIES as "Hitchcock with full frontal nudity," and while he enjoyed the film he joked that the female lead portrayed "the least ethical journalist" ever.

-ALERT! ALERT! ALERT! Roeper likes DOMINO! In his review for the recent Tony Scott dud he calls it cartoonish and over the top. But just when I thought he'd be in for a tongue lashing from Ebert it turns out Ebert liked the film as well! What a mind fuck!

-NORTH COUNTRY received praise from Roeper. He states that Richard Jenkins deserves an Oscar nomination. He does point out that the film's final courtroom scene includes the cliche moment where the judge says to the effect of "This is highly unusual but I'll allow it."

-Thumbs up again for Tom Wilkinson in SEPERATE LIES.

-Thumbs up for Jeff Daniels in THE SQUID AND THE WHALE. Roeper points out that Daniels does a great job of playing a man whose arrogance and elitism leads to a tarnished relationship with his family.

-In the "Thumbs Up Video" segment Roeper selected BATMAN BEGINS. He echoes the good review he gave upon the film's theatrical release but does attack the disc for having a far too complicated special feature menu. I don't know if this is actually the case but this was also expressed in the great disc review done on this site.

So for this week there were 6 films and 6 thumbs up. Ebert also liked all the films on this recent broadcast.

Likelihood that any of these reviews will outrage the geek community: 20%

There might be a few who make cracks about "How could he like DOMINO but not FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING?" But all in all I don't think he has done much this week to stir the pot of fanboy hatred.

This concludes the Roeper report.

Have the Roepercoats gathered enough petition signatures to get Richard his own show yet?

Yep, I caught the show where he gave Thumbs Down to Wallace & Gromit ... and his explanation was basically because it was "boring in parts". Um, I don't think admitting you have a nanosecond attention span is something to be proud of. Were-Rabbit was entertaining from beginning to end Period.

What`s annoying is that he can`t even describe well why he LIKES a movie. It usualy goes like:"a couple of interesting things there. Just brilliant!". I`m counting the days when he`s gonna say "so awesome!".

Lord of the Rings really sucks as a movie

Roeper is not a dude I ever agree with, except when he gave thumbs down to Fellowship of the Things. Man, I must be the only person who hates the LOTR flicks. Peter Jackson is talented, but the films are bloated bores with wall to wall CGI to create a world that is actually lamer than the world we live in now. I'd like to see Frodo carry that ring across a busy freeway and not get flattened into Hobbit soup. Seriously, those flicks are like 11 hours of eye rolling crap. I still can't believe I saw people crying in the theatre after Return of the Thing. To quote my man Chris Elliot, Get a life!

ps: I can't believe roeper gave thumbs down to Shaun of the Dead.
(you got red on you, richard, from me stabbing you)

to reiterate: Lord Of the Rings is no better than Waterworld or The Postman. I'm suprised Kevin Costner didn't play the Viggo role. Ha!

I'm going to have to go on record here with my support for Roeper as a valid critic. He knows what he's doing, even though he sometimes doesn't do it well and I disagree with him more than half the time.

It pains me to see that some people here whose opinion I greatly respect have written Roeper off entirely, but if that's the world I have to live in, so be it.

Richard Roeper is not important enough in the grand scheme of things for me to lose respect for anyone just because they don't like him.

No better than Waterworld or The Postman? Gad, were you randomly beaten with a hardcover copy of each book when you were a child?

Okay, I like the Lord of the Rings movies, and even I have to call bullshit on that. First of all, if he doesn't like the movies, do you think listing its oscars is going to make him say "My god, I've been wrong all this time"? But more importantly, since when did oscar wins actually equal a good movie? Forrest Gump beat Pulp Fiction for best picture, and Forrest Gump is ass.

You know what? Fuck it. Put me on the Roeper fan list. I could have cared less before, but with all the hate going around, I'll give out some love. Certainly I haven't made a point to catch the show as regularly as I did when Siskel was on, but I don't think it's because of Roeper per se. Siskel & Ebert had damn near become an institution. Roeper will only ever be the guy who replaced him. He's Sammy Hagar, but that doesn't mean he's not worthwhile. It's just tough having to follow a virtual icon.

The few times I've seen Roeper he comes across as articulate and level headed. That's enough for me. And some of the reviews that have been tossed around as "proof" of his incompetence -- well dammit -- I happen to agree with some of his opinions. I was bored shitless the first time I saw Fellowship of the Ring. I didn't think Hellboy was all that special either.
