SPOILERS! Do not click this if you hate spoilers!

I wanted to start a new thread for this to bitch about recent spoilers that ruined my movie watching experience.

I will post more after this post, so they don't spoiler anything for themselves.

THE TRAILERS for High Tension and posts/thread titles anything at all, gave away the twist. Some ass said somewhere that there was a "twist" while I was glazing over a different thread entirely and I figured out the twist from the image of the poster I had stuck in my mind and along with what would be common sense.

Now this probably speeks to movies as a whole being too formulaic, but I seriously feel that I would have been blown away/appreciated High Tension more if I knew nothing about it.

This goes for almost any movie these days:

Serenity, I knew the bad guy would live till the end, why? Because you see him again in the trailer fighting Mal after he has clearly been shot by Mal earlier in the trailer, also because he's the main bad guy, but they could have tricked me and had another bad guy take his place, but the trailer ruined that possibility.

Land of the Dead, the trailer actually shows Dennis Hopper getting bitten, with Cholo (John Leguizomo 'sp' biting him) which almost totally ruins the climax of the film on it's own.

A History of Violence, I knew the whole time that he was Joey from Philly, even though I made it a point to avoid everything about the film, except seeing the trailer, which made me want to see the film in the first place, but the trailer gave away everything (though I thought Cronenberg would pull some crazy shit). From the trailer I knew that when confronted on his front lawn he would fight, and from the trailer or movie cliche', I knew that when he was on the ground, his son or somebody would shoot someone to save him.

I can't remember ever example, but I can just see one image these days and know what is going to happen later, or if someone says 'there's a big twist' they fuck it up for me. I don't know who to blame for this, either movies or people, I guess they're both to blame, oh and then there's MYSELF, but that's the hardest person to blame, and just how am I supposed to get interested in films without seeing the trailer? I'm not going to go to crap movies blind and hope for the best.

Everyone else please vent...

I Dissagree

Ok so to start off

"High Tension" was french. When was the last time the French did anything right? I do beleive that the ending bordered on retarded, but the rest of the movie was rather good.

As for "Serenity" it can hardly be called a twist that the badguy lived to fight on later in the movie. I mean that is what bad guys are supposed to do, come back and bother the heros some more. Why would they introduce a new bad guy for a climactic fight, that would be dumb especially since they spent the whole movie right from the first scene onward trying to make him look cool.

Dennis Hopper is the bad guy in "Land of the Dead" it was expected that he was to be eaten. If finding out who he gets bitten by ruined the climax of the movie for you, you're being overly critical.

In "A History of Violence" the fact that Tom really Was Joey from Philly wasn't supposed to be a big twist at all. Anyone with a third grade education could have figured that out. The important aspect of that revelation was how he handled his past life and his wanting to still be Tom and stay with his family.

If You're going to blame anyone Blame M. Night Shamlayn, cause seriously he started the whole twist ending revival. And "The Village" had the most retarded twist ever.

Lol and I agree with you mostly.

But regarding The Village I guessed the "twist" when everyone said how stupid the ending was, "I thought, well I bet it's in modern times, and the village doesn't know" just because of what people were saying about it. I avioded any spoilers what so ever, but when any thread title was 'stupidest ending ever' or 'relates to modern times politics' or something I figured it out.

In terms of a trailer, the one for NORTH COUNTRY pretty much displays the entire film in those 2 minutes.

Don't get me started on all the spoilers contained in the preview of SISTERHOOD OF THE TRAVELING PANTS. I could tell right away that it wasn't the jeans that were special, but the spirit within each of the girls is what truly made them so unique.

I just thought of a great example:

I was watching The Machinist, having not seen anything for the film, except bits of reviews saying 'the movie is great', with a friend and when Bale said the line "A little guilt goes a long way" I figured out the rest of the film.

I may be overly critical, but despite everything I'm saying here I still enjoyed the films, I'm just saying I may have enjoyed them more if the trailers and small clips/quotes of reviews didn't give away so much. Though I figured out The Machinist, because of the writing in that example. At least I would never say out loud in the theater 'he's the killer!', like a jackass did in Minority Report right before Von Sidow (sp?) shot Collin Farrel, which was obvious to anyone who say L.A. Confidential, but still don't say it asshat.

One of the national newspapers here spolied Million Dollar Baby by making a quip about Hillary Swank being beaten to death twice to win an oscar.

What I liked about the Machinist is that the twist wasn't the crux of the film. The give it away pretty early, and on purpose I think. The crux is watching Bale's reactions as he discovers it slowly.

So this is a thread bitching about spoilers but the title says "Do not click here if you hate spoilers!"
These are the exact reasons why I try and stay away from as much media as possible on movies. I don't look at production stills, or watch trailers, or surf the official site or read reviews(I do read them AFTER the movie though). I find I enjoy the film much more when I do this.

And now that ruins me for Boys Don't Cry, ironically. But I never really was interested in that movie anyway.
OK, wait. How can that ruin you for BOYS DON'T CRY, which is based on a famous real life incident?

I mean, should I not tell you how JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR ends?

Also, there's a shelf life on spoilers. If you don't see a movie in a reasonable time frame, it's fair game.

I've heard it's roughly a year. That's enough time for a theatrical release and then for it to hit DVD as well and maybe even hit the HBO/Cinemax/TMN (Canadian movie channel). Am I wrong?

I almost strangled a friend when he told me that Gollum bit Frodo's finger.

I guess that deserved two posts.

I'm less annoyed with people who blurt out the story than trailers.

I would have enjoyed pondering how Vincent Cassel managed to get past the laser alarm systems if the trailer for Ocean's 12 hadn't given the whole thing away!

This thread seems to be less about actual spoilers and more about Milkyway's ability to figure out what happens in movies.

Thank you, though I hate myself for it every Tuesday.

I feel like I really spoiled all porn films for myself after the first time that I masturbated. I suddenly felt like I knew how they were all going to end.

Sometimes I feel like spoilers can actually aid in watching the movie. With The Village, I had a friend "spoil" it for me. I was able to focus on the actual film, rather than worry and ponder about the twist ending like my date.

And finally- waiting in the line to get into the theatre to see another movie, a screening of Alien Vs. Predator let out. A very angry guy left the AVP theatre and declared to all of us "It's a f**king tie!" Best spoiler I've ever experienced.

I was half-joking, but are you really saying that the story of Boys Don't Cry is supposed to be common knowledge? It's not like a story like that was the first of it's time. There's tons of stories movies are based on that no man-on-the-street would know. Like Ray.

Identity was completely ruined by the trailer. Towards the end, you see the kid walking away from the exploding car, looking all menacing. All I could say was, "Oh great, the kid did it."

Oh great. So I guess I just went out and bought the DVD [fullscreen version, no less] of this for nothing?!?! Thanks Molt.
