The Flash: The Series also coming to DVD in January

January is looking to be an expensive month. "The Flash" is going to be put out on January 10th. Here's a link to a story about the release:

"War of the Worlds: The Series" coming in November. "Alien Nation" and "The Flash" coming in January. It's like all the geeky shows I liked as a kid are coming out at once. Can "Time Trax" be far behind?

I bought the pilot and the Mark Hamill episodes on VHS. Hamill is basically autidioning for this role as the cartoon Joker.

This is welcome news. I used to love Alien Nation as well....clearly we were on the wavelength for television during that era.

You're right, the sci-fi programs from that time period all seemed to have a good mix of elements that led to enjoyable shows. Maybe it's because a lot of them didn't last very long that cause them to come off so well. There was no "wearing out their welcome" by being on for endless seasons. That's what sort of happened with me and "The X-Files." After 2 seasons I'd had enough. I think the only sci-fi show that I've felt gyped about not getting more of since then was "Harsh Realm."

I guess I can finally tape over the "Flash" pilot that's been in some box in the closet for 15 years.

This was one of my favorites from the early 90's as well. I still remember the theme song for The Flash that was written by Danny Elfman. I thought it captured the frenetic energy of the character perfectly.

Good call, that was a movie quality score from Elfman.

Do I remember correctly? Did that show get cancelled because John Wesley Shipp was outed in a trashy gossip mag?

I never heard that. I thought it was cancelled because it was one of the more expensive shows to produce at that time and the ratings didn't justify it staying on the air. Is Shipp gay? I know he was on "Dawson's Creek" but that might just make him an honorary gay.

Shipp is gay? Holy crap, I must discern the truth. I always figured that the show just cost too much to make. I hope that the DVD release cleans up the "flash photo effect", where they use a different camera when the flash does his thing.

Remembering that opening theme makes it painful to think about how mediocre the spidey scores are.

After some very lengthy research (translation: 2 minutes of snooping around on google) it looks like The Flash is gay. What a bombshell! Come to think of it I don't recall him sealing the deal with Amanda Pays on the show but I might be wrong there.

Oh well, I've accepted Sgt. Al Powell's sexual preference and I see no reason not to do the same here. Straight Flash or Queer Flash that show rocked.

I remember crushing on the girl with the british accent. The Flash was great.

Amanda something, she ended up marrying Corben Bernsen.

Amanda Pays. She was aiight.

My wife will be very sad to hear Dawson's dad plays for the other team.

I loved this show muchly adn yes I believe that the reason why it was cancelled was a combo of ratings adn expense.

More shocking news folks. The kid that wears the Flash costume in DADDY DAY CARE, he's gay to.

Remember back when basically any movie, t.v. show, or cartoon other than 'Super Friends' that had super heroes or comics characters was treated as a rare treasure by comics geeks? Even the short lived Sable and Human Target shows had the comic geek spotlight shown on them like "Look, it's a show based on a comic!" I know Marvel Films has had its fair share of criticism, but they have produced some great stuff and really opened the door for films like Sin City, Hellboy, and the return of Batman and Superman to the silver screen.

Oh yeah, and the Flash was a great show when I was a kid, should
be interesting to see how it holds up.

I loved this show as a kid. I remember a lot of people were giving the Shipp flack for the "muscle suit". That argument is dumb as hell. This DVD is going to sell like gangbusters.

I've been waiting on this for a long time. Talking about its cancelation, another reason was the lousy time slots CBS kept sticking it in. First Thursday nights when Cosby and the Simpsons were at their most popular, then dumping the final few episodes on Saturday night. And speaking of Flash, anybody heard any word if the special edition of the '80s Flash Gordon is still happening?

Yeah, but Eddie was totally asking for it.

Dear sweet Lord, I don't think I'm going to laugh at anything harder the next few days than I did just now.

Man, did I love that Danny Elfman theme. I haven't thought about this show since it went off the air. I'll be snapping it up for nostalgia value alone. I'm curious to see just how cheesy and low-tech the flash's speed-effect looks now. Anyone care to break the news to me gently? Does it look god-awful to our jaded, CGI-ed gazes?

I remember AGONIZING over the choice between the Simpsons and the Flash. I was allowed one hour of television a week on school nights (Mon-Thur), and while the Flash aired, that was my hour.

Anyone surprised that the actor who played the flash is gay should read up a little on Hollywood. 85-90% pure gay, people.

I love the Flash pilot movie. It's great. And I bought that Trickster VHS tape years ago. But everything in between I've never seen and have been dying to. Great show, the costume, the effects, all surprisingly good. And yes, Elfman's theme is awesome. Just never ask him to copy it. Yikes!

Perfect alignment.

I'm giggling like a schoolgirl.

Hell yes. This is going to make a great birthday gift for me, as it falls about two weeks after this set is released.

Jesse, I had the same problem as a kid: Flash or Simpsons on Thursday nights? I remember watching the pilot, but the rest of the series, pardon the lousy pun, is a blur.

I have a VHS copy of the pilot taped off of (then) Fox Family Channel in 2000. It aired about two months after I'd started buying the comic on a monthly basis, and the only problem I had with it was the slightly darker take on the character (influenced by the success of Batman, no doubt).

The effects still held up (the DC special issue put out mentions the $6 million budget per episode, at the time the most expensive in TV history) and truthfully, if the David Goyer/Ryan Reynolds project gets off the ground, I can't imagine the speed effect or costume being that much different.

The Elfman theme is great. I'm currently listening to a version off of his second Music For A Darkened Theatre compilation CD. It's an incredibly energetic 1:30, and makes for good background music while I type this.

With Rick Springfield in the cool jet plane? I fucking LOVED that show. I'd buy that on DVD. Couldn't be more than $20. They had what, like 5 epsiodes?

And I liked the Flash as well. I'll probably rent it instead of buying, though.
