Late to the party: Oz

Well after several years I finally got around to checking out "Oz". I always avoided it when it was on thinking it wouldn't be anything I'd be interested in. Boy was I wrong. Great show, great acting, great storylines. The one thing that bugged me was the narrarator. I like Harold on "Lost" but he got really annoying here. Everything else was gold though. One of my favorites was the "Beecher" storyline. The resolution to that was awesome. I've never seen someone get owned like that. Great series. Glad I gave it a chance.

I was late on this one as well. I don't like prison movies too much because they have all the same cliches but I got the first season set of discs as a gift shortly after it came out and I was hooked from then on. It was always fun to try and debate who was the worst of the bunch because it would change from show to show. I'm digging seeing all the actors from the show pop up in all the recent big movies and TV shows. But where's Terry Kinney? I haven't seen that guy in anything lately.

As a "Sopranos" fan I really got a greater appreciation for Edie Falco after seeing how radically different she was on the first few seasons of "Oz."

Also, this show really points out how big a joke "Prison Break" is.

The narration bothered me too at first, but as I rewatched the show it made more sense, with the themes of whatever the episode was about. Actually the only thing the show ever did that I didn't like was the story line about the aging pills.

What? Augustus Hill is awesome and you guys know it. OZ was great but there was about a season and a half near the end that was pretty dumb.

I've always thought that the show started to tumble when Adebisi was killed off. It was a great moment but you needed him around. The show was still worth watching but that was when the trip downhall started.

Here's to hoping that Tom Fontana can get the SNL Seinfeld in Oz bit added to season 6.

I lucked out and taped that bit when E showed a rerun of that "SNL." If not on an "Oz" DVD it should end up on some kind of "SNL: Best of TV parodies" DVD down the road because it's classic.

Oz is a pretty solid show. It started to go south a little bit towards the end, but it was still pretty cutting edge, which was a nice treat at the time.

I started watching OZ last month and just finished this week with the Season Six DVD. Damn man, what a fantastic show. It’s become one of my favorites.

The actors all do excellent jobs, the writing and direction is all great. The show’s extremely brutal and intense yet, I’m always finding myself addicted to see what’s gonna happen next. I do agree that Adebisi’s presence was missed towards the end but there were still some cool new characters introduced like Burr Redding or Omar White and some intriguing storylines to keep one interested (like Robson getting kicked out of the Brotherhood and Cyril being on Death Row). I also liked how they brought back all the previously deceased characters to narrate with Augustus in the final season.

Definitely recommended.

I lost interest in this series somewhere in the 2nd-3rd series when the "new" guy took over emerald city and the prisoners were running everything. Far too unrealistic. If it eventually got back on track, I may have to check out the later seasons.

For anyone who has seen the DVD Extras, is there ever an explanation for how Adebisi's tiny hat stayed on his head? Double sided tape?

Ditto to the joke that is Prison Break.

Oz lost something when the sci-fi bullshit creeped in something about an anti-aging serum?

Overall, great show. Not something I would purchase and watch multiple times, but some great acting and plot twists to be had. I was surprised I gave a shit about these people. The first cable show I actually watched until The Shield.

Schillinger is definitely in the top 10 of all time great tv bad guys. I cheered he got shit on by the dude he was tormenting.
A credit to JK Simmons for being a fantastic actor, this and Jonah Jameson in Sipder-Man are of course, light-years apart.

On the other hand, O'Riely's scowling became redundant.

One of the problems with the show towards the end was the Beecher/Schillinger feud. It turned into a live action Road Runner Vs. Wild E. Coyote type relationship.

I still say Dean Winters would be perfect for a low budget "Max Payne" movie.

The "aging pill" subplot was only for a few episodes in the 4th Season.

And Death Surge, I guess that "new guy" you're speaking of is Querns. He was only on the show for a few episodes that season but then brought back for the final two episodes of the show. And there were a lot of great episodes in the last three seasons despite Adebisi's presence being missed.

Here's a fairly recent interview where the reporter asked Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje about the hat: http://blog.seattlepi.nwsource.com/t...ves/101195.asp

Apparently he doesn't like being asked that question.

You can't compare Prison Break and Oz. It's not fair to either show, so why are you even trying?

Thank you sir. If his explanation is true, then his head must have a gravitional pull the same as the Moon's. That hat staying on his head defied all known laws of physics.

To an extent you're right but they're both set in prisons so it's going to happen. It's like comparing HALF PAST DEAD to MIDNIGHT EXPRESS. I only saw about the first half-dozen episodes of "Prison Break" but there were so many moments where I threw up my hands and said "Warden Glenn would never let this shit go on."

Luke Perry's ghost was worse.

Here's a fairly new Maxim interview with Adewale where he talks about Adebsisi (and Eko): http://www.maximonline.com/articles/...aspx?a_id=7315

Oz was a great show and I love how pretty much every episode of Law & Order has an Oz actor in it. Whenever I watch it I always wonder which Oz actor will be in this one?

As with all HBO shows, they really make me laugh when I watch a network show and see hard-ass cops who never swear or strip clubs with fully clothed strippers.

My only complaint was the excessive amount of penis in the show. But that's just the price you pay for uncnsored TV, you have to take the bad with the good.

So we just finished watching the first season, and I have to admit, I'm hooked. I think the theatrical elements of the show, from the Poet character to the "everybody talks in monologues and heightened dialogue" to "Augustus Hill's Graduate Thesis for an Experimental Theater Degree" are my favorite parts not named Ryan O'Reilly.

Because Ryan O'Reilly really is one of the best characters in TV history.
