Choosing a Domain name.

Damn. I never really realized before how much of the web's domain names are no longer available or are up for sale for $50,000. I wanted something simple but after spending an hour searching with a thesaurus on my knee I settled for memorable rather than short. DarklingScribe.com

I like what it means and the sound of it fits the tone of the website I want to create. It's going to be a website about a unknown man who lurks in the shadows collecting and writing short stories about stuff that happens on the fringes of society and reality. I intend it to have a sort of twilight zone feeling.

And I was also lucky in that my own full name has not been claimed as a Domain so I snached that up as well, because you never know who will buy it and then try to sell it back to me.

Anybody else out there just starting websites? Mine won't be up for a good month because I need to decide on a layout and hopefully learn how to put up mp3 and Mpeg4 quicktime stuff. Message boards I think are currently way above my limited web building ablities to put up.

I was able to get my full name as a domain without any trouble. Of course, I had to use my middle initial but I use that professionally so it worked fine for my self-promotional site. I did run into some trouble when I decided that I wanted to redesign the site and give it a more memorable name. There just wasn't much available. I finally settled on the "Andyrama." It's silly but it matches the tone of my work and the upcoming site. Unfortunately, even with this I had to settle for a .net domain. Someone has the .com version but doesn't really seem to be using it. It's a shame but maybe he's got big plans for it so I haven't made any offers or tried to get it from him.

Linking to MP3 files shouldn't be a problem - you just upload the file to your server and point a link at it the same way you'd link to a normal page or another website.

The same is true of any media file, but if you want to embed them in the page, rather than having them launch in the relevant application, then that's probably more complex - though not by much. A few minutes on Google should find you a decent tutorial - these might give you a start.

As for message boards, you can buy those as self-contained add-ons. Never done it myself, but as long as you don't want anything too complex it shouldn't be too hard. CHUD uses VBulletin but there are plenty of free/shareware models out there.

If you're not expecting a great deal of messageboard traffic, then any of the free software packages should work just fine for you.

Was there really any need for that?

I'm trying to find out of the domain name for what I call my production company ("Total Protonic Productions"), but I have no clue where/how to find out if this name is registered. How do I go about doing this?

www.godaddy.com is the server I'm using and they do free searches on domain names.

You could always try www.negasonicmonkeyfuck.com
Surely no one has taken that domain name, yet.

Also, who was the "visionary" crack directed at?
