Just got this email and thought I would put the word out...

After four thrilling years, BMW Films’ award-winning on-line film series, The Hire, will take its final bow on October 21.

The sometimes touching, sometimes funny, and always exciting twists of The Hire have attracted over 100 million views. In a powerful turn that reflects the performance of a BMW itself, Clive Owen (star of Closer, Croupier, Sin City, King Arthur and Gosford Park) plays a mysterious driver hired for his sharp driving skills and unswerving cool. Each film presents a fierce new challenge to the driver’s talents.

Directed by filmmakers hailed for such classics as Seven, Face/Off, Top Gun, and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, and starring some of today’s hottest talents, The Hire broke ground in style while blanketing the viewer in fast-paced suspense. The BMW Films site also features cool extras, including cast interviews, making-of documentaries, and more.

In 2002, The Hire was awarded the Cannes International Advertising Festival’s Cyber Lion Grand Prix prize. The series was inducted into the permanent collection of New York’s Museum of Modern Art (MoMA). Additional accolades include WIRED magazine’s 2001 “Best Excuse for Broadband” award; and, in 2002, John Woo’s episode, “Hostage,” won the Los Angeles International Short Film Festival’s “Best Action Short” award.

Don’t miss your last chance to view the series of short films that caused a worldwide buzz. (And if you’ve never seen them before, it’s an experience you won’t soon forget.) Log on to bmwfilms.com to screen The Hire today!

Get two seasons’ worth of episodes and behind-the-scenes commentary on one DVD, compliments of BMW. You just pay for shipping and handling. Only a limited number of DVDs remain, so act now!

I run a Scion dealership in Chattanooga, and we watch that DVD in showroom from time to time. It's awesome, and well worth the money.

The only caveat - no 'all play' feature. Other than that, awesome.

Thanks for the link, I just ordered mine for the sinfully extravagant price of four dollars.

I'd been stalling and putting off my purchase of this, but now that it won't be available soon I decided that now was the time to get my own copy.

Cheers for posting this -- just put in an order.

I already have this on DVD, but did I miss something? David Fincher didn't direct one on my set, but I know he was one of the producers. Did he end up directing one later, or is that just a mistake?

Do you have a total of 8 shorts on yours? I think that's what's in the CE. Otherwise, it's their clever PR way of lying through their teeth.

A friend of mine and I had some fun a few years ago courtesy of BMW Films. One of the films shows Clive (I think) opening a glove box or something and there was a phone number on a piece of paper. It wasn’t a 555 number so he called it. There was a cryptic message that I believe led him to a website. The thing turned into a scavenger hunt where he had to make phone calls and check websites and do all kind of weird stuff. If I remember right it kind of had a storyline to it. The last clue said to look for a man in a black track suit in front of the Stardust and ask him for a fork between 7 and 8 on January 4th. We’ll I work for an airline and my friend calls me and asks if I want to go to Vegas and if I can get him there cheep. After he explained what was going on I said sure, why not.

So we fly into Vegas on a Saturday morning and basically hang out. At the appointed time we head to the Stardust and there is a young guy in a black track suit. We go up to him and ask for the fork. He asks Daniel a question about one of the clues form the scavenger hunt and then sends us into the hotel to one of the ball rooms. We get there and there is a hotel security guy at the door. He asked us what was going on and we explained what we knew and he just shook his head. After he lets us in there is another person inside who has a set of pictures and he asks Daniel a bunch of questions about them. We get them right and he tells us to go to the Top of the World Lounge at the Stratosphere as quickly as we can get there.

So we haul butt to the Stratosphere. All the cabs were busy at the Stardust so we decided to walk it. Dumb. It is much farther than it looks we get there and we are both sweating bullets. If you have been to the Stratosphere you know there is a security check point before you get to the elevators to the top. There was a huge line at the bottom. We were in a hurry and so we very skillfully cut in line. We were standing by the front of the line and there was a group of Japanese tourists trying to get through the check point with all their camera gear. There were major language issues and the security folks didn’t notice us ducking under the rope and passing through the metal detectors. We head for the elevators and the lady by the door asks if we are going to the BMW thing. We said yes and she put us in an express elevator to the lounge.

We get to the lounge and find our selves in a nice party put on by BMW. They had free food, drinks, pre-release copies of the DVD, hats and full size movie posters. We mingled with the other people who went all the way with the scavenger hunt and the BMW the folks from BMW marketing. It was a good time and met people from all over the country. At the end they took us down and held a drawing for a brand new Z4. Actually, you would get it once the Z4 came out, the car they had there was a preproduction model. It ended up going to a young newlywed couple from Bellingham, WA. We really had a great time and it was a bit of an adventure running around Vegas. I’ve got my Hire movie poster framed and hanging in one of my guest rooms.

Yay, ordered.

But a 4 to 6 week wait? Damn. Are they just about to make the damn things?
actually it took about 8-10 weeks for them to ship it to me this summer so figure on seeing it around Christmas.

When I ordered mine way back when it didn't take too long at all. Odd.
Did they remove the link to order? I've got the old short films disk, but that's only got 4 of the original series on it.

It took 3 tries for me to get a working copy where all the shorts played right on several different DVD players. Luckily, BMW customer service sent them free of charge.

Got my copy today in the mail.

Haven't seen it yet but plan to later tonite.

Woohoo.

I too, received my copy in the mail today. I had only previously seen about three of the original batch. I viewed them all about an hour ago and some of them are hit or miss.

I enjoyed "Hostage" because of the tension and I thought "Beat the Devil" was weird but entertaining. Gary Oldman is a fuckin' pimp, and the story was very off-beat.

My favorite for sheer hilarity would have to be "Star" by Guy Ritchie. I was laughing my ass off as Madonna's snobby ass got thrown around the car.

"Powder Keg" was poignant and has some great dialogue between Clive and Stellan.

Overall, the whole series is good and you can't beat only paying three bucks for it.

I got mine earlier this week, and really, "Powder Keg" was the only one that I really liked. Most of them were just okay, but they seemed to be people trying to show off, whereas "Powder Keg" did a really good job of telling a story. I mean, yeah, they're big expensive commercials, so showing off is good (and fun), but "Powder Keg" was the only one that I thought had much filmic merit.

"Hostage" was good, "Beat the Devil" was alright, I almost had to stop watching "Star" because it was so awful.

Firstly, Madonna has just godawful screen presence, and secondly, if I want to see a music video for that Blur song, I'll go back to 1997.

I like what Ang Lee tried to do with the car ballet, but it didn't really work that well. Wong Kar-Wai's piece was pretty and meditative, but the twist wasn't great and kind of brought the whole thing down a bit quality-wise.

I did like Frankenheimer's work too. Overall, it's a nice set to have, and you certainly can't beat the price. I'm glad this thread made me aware of the DVD, and I'm anxious to check out the commentaries too.

I've had trouble with mine as well. Do you have an email address for them? I couldn't find one on the BMW Films site.

Bump.

I've been reading some about this film series (when they came out I didn't have the computer access I needed to watch them, and I didn't know about the DVDs). Anyone know if there are any plans to release a new, hopefully anamorphic DVD set of these films?

I love these cool little flicks. I had trouble getting the ordering online to work. Site wouldn't advance past the credit card section. I e-mailed them to let them know and they sent one to me for free.

Awesome!
