Cat Power – “The Greatest” 01/24/06

Any other fans of Chan out there? I’m interested in seeing her with a full touring band. I saw her do a solo performance last year, and she looked like she could have a nervous breakdown at any second. Ahh, January can’t come sooner.

10/11/05 — New (accurate!) album details revealed
On January 24, 2006, Matador will be releasing the long-awaited new studio album from Cat Power, 'The Greatest' on CD and LP in most major industrial countries.

Recorded at Memphis, TN's Ardent Studios over the summer by Stuart Sikes, 'The Greatest' while the most confident and life-affirming work of Chan Marshall's career, is as intensely personal, haunting and provocative as any of its predecessors. The album's players are a bona fide All-Star team of Memphis musicians, including Al Green sideman Teenie Hodges on guitar, Leroy "Flick" Hodges and David Smith on bass, Rick Steff on keys, Jim Spake on sax and trumpteer Scott Thompson amongst others.

The album's sequence is as follows:

The Greatest
Could We
Lived In Bars
Islands
After It All
The Moon
Living Proof
Empty Shell
Willie
Where Is My Love
Hate
Love & Communication

An MP3 of "The Greatest" is available now for your consideration.

While world touring with a full band will commence in early '06, the following Cat Power solo dates have been confirmed:

10-13 Baltimore, MD - Ottobar
10-14 Charlottesville, VA - Satellite Ballroom

If you pay money to see this chick, you are a retard. I don't say that to be mean, but if you shell out good money to see this unprofessional, awkward, middle-school caliber performance, you are mentally handicapped in some way.

But it's also so fascinating at the same time.

So is an autopsy.

She's interesting. Her albums are really good but I've heard similar things about her live performances. I think having a band behind her will only help her in a live setting. I'm sure the ticket prices for her shows are modest. I'd see her.

I saw her live and she was great.

Looking forward to it.

Used to be a fan, circa Moon Pix. Saw her play live in Austin. If you want a big production out of a show, you won't find anything close from Chan. But I was surprised by how strong (in that sultry, husky way) her voice was live. Her next full-length album bored me, though. I can't believe she waited so long to put out another album (not the one with covers, but the one after), and then when it came out it sounded like it was written and recorded in a week. Not a fan anymore.

I always wrote her off, largely on the basis of the stories from the Moon Pix tour. But her song on the new Dirty Three record is really really good. That got me checking out Moon Pix and I like it. I'll probably be on board for this one.

It would be difficult for her to continually fuck up assuming the autopsy was on a drifter and no one cared about the cause of death.

You don't like her. We get it.

I've seen her twice--once by herself and once with a band. by herself, she was a fascinating mess--stopping, starting, getting off stage, inviting the audience on stage. with a band, a bit more relaxed and in control. either way, seeing her is an experience. such a gorgeous voice. supposedly, she's publicly said there won't be any breakdowns on this tour, as she wouldn't want to let down the legends who'll be in her backing band.

I'm supposed to go see her in concert on Wednesday.

I've only heard her cover of "Sea of Love", but I like it.

Sorry, but I got a real beef with celebrity worship, especially when that celebrity is painfully untalented. I hate that her shtick (and it is shtick because without it, her music wouldn't warrant a tour) is what she goes on rather than musical ability.

One would hope she would have the professionalism to not break down on stage EVER, but at least there's hope for those that see her with a group.

With all this hatred, I feel like I created a Star Wars prequel thread.

She's hardly a celebrity. And I wouldn't call it schtick.
To say her records wouldn't merit a tour doesn't make much sense.
But whatever, I'm not going to debate whether Cat Power deserves your $15.

"The Greatest" definitely deserves it. I've been listening to it on myspace and I'll be there with bells on when it drops.
