I need this game so bad. PLayed it at Digital Life last weekend and was hooked...the guitar controller makes things that much better. Anyone getting it? I've been in the mood for another music game fix now that the Donkey Konga madness has been dying down over here....and the tracklisting in Guitar Hero's gotta be the best one ever made for a game-

Audioslave "Cochise"
Boston "More than a Feeling"
Bad Religion "Infected"
Black Sabbath "Iron Man"
Blue Oyster Cult "Godzilla"
David Bowie "Ziggy Stardust"
Burning Brides "Heart Full of Black"
Cream "Crossroads"
Deep Purple "Smoke on the Water"
The Donnas "Take It Off"
The Exies "Hey You"
Franz Ferdinand "Take Me Out"
Helmet "Unsung"
Incubus "Stellar"
Joan Jett and the Blackhearts "I Love Rock 'n' Roll"
Judas Priest "You Got Another Thing Comin"
Jimi Hendrix "Spanish Castle Magic"
Megadeth "Symphony of Destruction"
Motorhead "Ace Of Spades"
Pantera "Cowboys from Hell"
Ozzy Osbourne "Bark at the Moon"
Queen "Killer Queen"
Queens of the Stone Age "No One Knows"
The Ramones "I Wanna Be Sedated"
Red Hot Chili Peppers "Higher Ground"
Stevie Ray Vaughan "Texas Flood"
Sum 41 "Fat Lip"
White Zombie "Thunderkiss '65"
The Edgar Winter Group "Frankenstein"
ZZ Top "Sharp Dressed Man"
Acro-Brats "Call Out"
Anarchy Club "Behind the Mask"
Artillery "The Breaking Wheel"
Count Zero "Sail Your Ship By"
Freezepop "Get Ready 2 Rokk"
Honest Bob and the Factory-to-Dealer Incentives "Hey"
Made In Mexico "Farewell Myth"
Monkey Steals the Peach "Theme from Guitar Hero"
The Model Sons "The Story of My Love"
Shaimus "All of This"
The Bags "Caveman Rejoice"
Din "Fly on the Wall"
Drist "Decontrol"
The Slip "Even Rats"
The Upper Crust "Eureka! I Found Love"
Graveyard BBQ "Cheat on the Church"
Black Label Society "Fire It Up"

All about the Megadeth and White Zombie. If anyone's gonna get this- newegg.com 's got it for 50 beans, which is an improvement on anywhere else (damn thing's going for around 70 cause of the controller)

I hadn't seen the tracklist before. That makes me actually want this game but it's kinda pricey. It'll go on the Christmas wish list for sure.
Checked the employee discount for the bundle.....$52.10. Awesome, but to be honest, I think I'd pay the $70 if I had to. This game looks great.
Man, that demo from On The Spot over at Gamespot looks fantastic...

Only thing that bothers me is that I don't see the guitar controller for sale seperately from the game anywhere. I really don't want to have to pick up two games just to play dueling mode....but dammit, i'm going to need two if i'm going to use this for a party.
I've never been too big on these music themed games. I feel corny doing DDR. And Karaoke would be the same. THIS one sounds cool though. Especially with that track list... I was at Digital Life too and saw it, but I idn't spend too much time in any one place. I should have paid more attention to it. Looked cool. Maybe Crow can hook us all up with his discount. Heh heh. But he's right, it almost sounds worth it for $70.

Too bad Twisted Sister isn't on there, cuz " I Wanna Rock! ". Oh my that was corny...

Here it is for $50, shipped.

Not a bad deal. But I don't want to pay more than....30 or so for another one.

You should've tried it at Digital Life.... probably the best game I played there...which isn't saying actually much. I spent more time at the Gametap station than with any of the new games.

Try Amplitude. All the fun of a rhythm game, none of the embarrassment (well, except for the dishonor of getting your ass kicked by a Blink 182 song). From what I hear, though, the game's becoming increasingly hard to find.

Ordinarily, I'd offer up a wink and a "Oh, it's a possibility", but recently they've started checking employee purchases, and asking questions when there's duplicate purchases of big things....so, now I offer a sigh and an "I wish I could".

Now, that said, if we're doing the CHUD Gift Swap again.....

Rich, Amplitude is the greatest thing ever. And you'll see me dead before you see me step onto a DDR mat.

So here's a stupid question: is the controller lefty-friendly? I play the guitar left-handed. Perhaps it doesn't matter because, you know, you're pressing buttons and not playing a guitar. But I'm reeeallly awkward with all things righty.

It's all good! Ha! I didn't even REALLY mean it, but the thought of you leaving the store with 20 or so bundles of the game and heading into a waiting crowd of drooling chewers is pretty entertaining.

And about Amplitude... uh... yeah. I actually USED to have it. Got it new at a BJs wholesale club for like $8 a ways back since I heard so many good things about it. I kind of had trouble getting into it though, but to be honest I never really gave it a chance. I was in a 'let me trade some stuff in' sort of mood a while back and off it went. What the hell was I thinking. That's what happens when you have too many games at home, and not enough time for any of them. Dang!!! If I stumble acroos it some day I'll pick it up... uh... again. d'oh!

edit: I still have a playable demo of Amplitude though, but I think it only has one song on it. The most recent P.O.D. album came with a demo of the game with a mix of one of their songs. I'll have to track it down again. It's at home... somewhere.
In the Gamespot video, they explain you can indeed switch the controls to a left handed variant. But they also say it's unlike playing an actual guitar enough that it won't really matter.

And allow me to break the trend and say DDR's a barrel of fun...until some 100 lb 15 year old steps up, puts the game on Heavy, and takes my Light-mode ass to town. Which is mainly why I only play at home. With the blinds shut.
I can totally see how DDR can be a ton of fun. For a schmuck like me I just have to totally loosen up and relax, let my inhibitions go a little and not worry about looking like a dork among my friends. I actually tried it for the first time last weekend at my friend's place on Xbox. he's got the two pad set up and everything. He also wants to get the new Karaoke Revolution game. Him and his girl play it and have fun. DDR was fun (me and my fiance were both trying it), but I'd have to be alone and play it before I can really get any good or even appreciate it a little more.

Guitar Hero, well, that sounds like something I can relate to a little easier.

From the On the Spot video, the RedOctane rep said they would indeed ship separate guitars, but you can also use a normal Dual Shock controller if you don't have a second guitar (though who'd want to, really?).

I've already got a backlog of games to play, and now this comes out. Damn.
So, anyone pick this up yet? I couldn't wait, so I grabbed it at Best Buy after work.
Tried a few songs in career mode, fucked up Smoke On the Water. Perhaps playing on medium isn't a good idea when you're slightly inebriated. Still, awesome game. Playing "You've Got Another Thing Coming" makes me feel like I can really play the guitar.

Damn, I didn't even know it'd been released yet. My game hasn't shipped.

Steeef, you notice if they were selling the controller seperately, and if they were...how much were they going for?
I was in Best Buy yesterday and they had one copy of the game/guitar box. I wanted to get it so badly. I picked it up and was almost ready to keep holding on to it, but I put it back down and only bought the cd binder I'd gone for in the first place. I'll put Guitar Hero on some sort of X-mas list I suppose and then marvel as noone I know decides to get it. HA!
are they the real versions of the songs, or karaoke revolution-style remakes? rocking out to a fake version of "unsung" just doesn't seem right.

They were not, but Red Octane's site sure has it for preorder:
http://www.redoctane.com/gh-sgcontroller.html

I also noticed that Best Buy sold their display copies last week, which is the only reason I got mine so early. It should be on sale this week everywhere else.

They're all covers, but if you'd told me they were the original songs, I'd believe you. They're all very faithful to the originals. Specifically, the singer on "Unsung" sounds uncannily similar.
In a fit of impatience (my store sold out a day before my paycheck arrived), I spent the day hunting this damn game down.. I ended up finding it at the EB Games in Union Square. They had 20 when I called. When I got there around 4 hours later, there were TWO. After selling 3 games and three DVDs, price came down to $50.01. Whew.

Anywho, spent about 3 hours with it on Easy (after making the mistake of starting Amplitude on Normal and getting my ass kicked while my nephew laughed, I'm willing to play it humble a while).....and I'm addicted.

As steeef said, if someone lied and told me these were the original songs, I'd believe 'em, with the exception of Ziggy Stardust (Guy sounds more like Thom Yorke at times than Bowie) and Stellar (Not like I'm the biggest Incubus fan, but it's a noticeable difference). Excellent job redoing these songs, much better than Karaoke Revolution.

And playing them is awesome....Not the same as the real thing, but it at least FEELS like it. My left hand is one false move away from carpal tunnel, but it's so worth it.

At the moment, No One Knows is kicking my ass. And I've played through Ace of Spaces 3 times just for the sheer thrill of it.

$50 well spent. Especially considering the alternative was spending $50 on the now-dubious Path of Neo.
Helpful tip for anyone having trouble with harder songs:
Go back to the earlier songs and attempt to get 5 stars. This should give you the chops to get better at the harder ones.

I'm working through the game on medium, and I've finished a crapload of the songs with only 3 stars. I'm scared to attempt "No One Knows", so I think I'll try this method out tonight.
It's definitely getting harder, but I've still been marching on through medium getting 4 stars on average. That blue button is testing me, though, especially with Cochise since it's the first song I've played where it's a regular part of the main riff.

I dread what Hard and Expert are gonna be like. I have no goddamn clue how I'm getting to that orange button.
How exactly does this game control? Do you just hold down the fret buttons as they pop up or what?
That's about the size of it. Hold em down, strum as needed. On long notes, you hold down the strum bar. And, if you want (most of the time I don't because it makes the song sound just bizzare) you can use the whammy bar to bend notes, and get extra star power (which, if you played Amplitude/Frequency, works like the multiplier power-up).

Yeah, I find the hardest parts of songs are switching rapidly between yellow and blue.
Finally arrived this morning.

Hell. YEAH. This weekend is cock full of rock.
I GOT BLISTERS ON ME FINGERS!!!

.....no, really. I do. One on my right thumb, one on the corner of my left pinky and ring finger. And I haven't even reached Hard yet. I'd be there already if I could A: Get No One Knows down pat once and for all, and B: Stop going back to Symphony of Destruction or Cowboys From Hell every 10 minutes..

Still, the 5 star ratings are starting to rack up. The next step is not too far now..
My hand hurts.

I just tried Ace of Spades on Expert.

I got OWNED. Holy shit, that's tough. I can't express how much I love this game. I got Jack Shit done today because of it.
You're on Expert already??
I have given a name to my pain.....and it is Bark At The Moon.
I picked this game up last night and me and my girl played until 4 this morning. We beat all the songs on hard and my god, going from hard to expert is fucking lunacy. My hands hurt so bad at the moment, but god is this game fun. Question though. Has anybody played this game using 2 controllers? And if so, is it fun? I'm seriously considering picking up a second guitar, but would like to get some opinions on the multiplayer.
Can't... stop... replaying... 'Take Me Out' and 'Thunderkiss '65'...

Seriously, this is the best rhythm game I've ever played. There's not a song I don't like (so far, I've beaten Easy (hey, don't laugh, this game is the first time I've ever picked up even a reasonable facsimile of a guitar) and I'm about halfway through Normal) and the whole feel the guitar controller gives you is magical. Seriously, if you don't find yourself doing a power stance while playing this game, the music in your soul is dead and not even Mr. B Natural could save that shit.

I hope they put out expansions to this game. There's so many songs that would be great in this type of game (how come no Anthrax, Harmonix? Why no 'Caught In A Mosh', 'Be All End All' or 'Got The Time'?), and a few new modes would kick all ass (especially a 'Jam Session' mode, where you can just screw around with the guitar and record it).

Now excuse me, my desire to sleep and my desire to play 'Ziggy Stardust' are currently at war.
Obviously, for any fan of rock, there's going to be glaring omissions of some sort (Tool? Pearl Jam? Nirvana? RATM?). Thing is, Harmonix tried to get some huge names in here (off-hand, I know they asked Metallica, Led Zeppelin, Van Halen, and the Rolling Stones), and either they didn't get a reply back in time or they just flat out refused (::coughZeppelincough:. But they did try, and the hope is, with the success of the first game, when they get started on the next one, getting the green light for songs shouldn't be as big a deal.

Still, they did extremely well putting this tracklist together. There's something from every corner of rock.

Also, Harmonix confirmed that they wanted to do an online mode, but couldn't get it ready in time. Undoubtedly, that's the first thing to go in next time.

P.S.--I'm halfway through Hard, taking the extra time to learn how to shift my fret hand around the buttons. Starting to rack up four star ratings, but certain songs continue to own me. (You Got Another Thing Coming and Take Me Out)

Doesn't look like Newegg's ever going to ship this to me, and I can't find a copy anywhere.

I hate my life.
Yep, it's happened. I now see the little markers in my head whenever I listen to music.

Funny thing is, immediately after I started subconciously seeing those markers, my playlist switched to 'Fury Of The Storm' by Dragon Force. They really should put that in as an 'ultra-insane' track, because holy shit my fingers were hurting just THINKING about playing it.

Update: Cowboys From Hell is my new addiction.
I was a little ill this week, so I decided to pick this up and recoup over the weekend. It hooked me in no time. It's easily the most purely fun game I've played in ages. That moment of shame you feel from strapping on a dorky little plastic guitar with big, bright buttons melts away pretty quickly. There's an enormously deep sense of satisfaction that comes from pulling off some of these songs that seems grossly disproportionate to what you'd think you could get from something that looks so silly. The multiplayer is really fun as well, but a second guitar feels needed. You can't wail back-to-back on a bilstering solo if one person just has a PS2 pad. It saps a bit of the magic out. Here's to hoping they don't stop with this one. I'd pick up any other compilations they come up with.
Just played it this weekend on my sister's new PS2, and holy hell, I'm hooked. I'm not willing to buy a PS2 for it, but I'll buy it the day it comes out for Xbox.

I hope it sells a billion copies and spawns a dozen sequels. I've got a wish list of songs a mile long.
They should have an Endurance level for the next game with the 14-minute version of "Freebird."
XBox port--Unlikely. The reason Karaoke Revolution made it over is because Konami owns it. Otherwise, Harmonix is Sony's bitch.

Freebird--Werbal jokes....but Endurance levels (maybe like the boss songs in Amplitude) would actually rock. Just not Freebird, is all.

Progress: Frankenstein, Cowboys From Hell, and Bark at the Moon on Expert destroy me.

Which is sad, because I've got 4-5 star ratings on everything up until No One Knows.

But unlike Amplitude, where the last 3 songs annoyed me into pure determination, I actually have no burning desire to beat the game yet. I'm having enough fun just going back, playing whatever I feel like after a hard day at work, occasionally beating scores.
I've also found that the unlockable songs can be loads of fun. Many are like technical exercises -- they've really helped me master a few things that made harder levels more accessible. Some of the inclusions aren't good songs, but they're great to play to.
I loved The Breaking Wheel, up until I tried it on Hard and Expert. Now it just makes my wrist hurt.

And once again as in games past, the Freezepop song, against my better judgement, gets stuck in my head at least once a week.
Is there any greater feeling that you're rocking the fuck out than when you're playing 'Unsung' on Expert (especially on the last part of the song when you pop your final star power)? I have yet to find one superior to that.
I bought this for my buddy for Christmas and I'm dying to check it out when he opens it.
I've asked for it from my significant other, here's hoping I get to rock out all day tomorrow.
I know its just a game but out of curiosity, for those of you who've played a real guitar before, how does it compare?

You strum with one hand on both this controller and a real guitar, and you hold them the same. That's about it.

Still, when you start playing songs at a higher level than easy, it really feels like you're playing the song.
You guys that are beating some of these songs on Hard and Expert have my undying respect.

That said, this is one fun fucking game. I may have to get a second controller to see what the co-op is like...
It is done.

Beat the game on Expert. Battle-Axe is in my possession. 3 star ratings from Crossroads onward. Cowboys From Hell is a hell of a lot easier once the chorus riff is mastered. Absolutely bullshat my way through Bark At The Moon. Nevertheless, it's done.

And I so don't feel like I'm done with this game yet.

Once my hands heal, that is.
Bastards....now I want it too.

I love/was surprised Bad Religion is on there. But it was such a shitty song choice.

Either way, I need to go hunt this one down.
Good luck. Apparantly the first wave is totally sold out, and EB is waiting on the company to make more. Anyone wanna ballpark how long that usually takes?
