Guitar Hero! - Page 3

Watch mediumdave's video from a few posts ago. It's a huge help, even with the inherent unworthiness you feel watching it.

In general though, until you get Hammer-Ons down, you're going nowhere with that song.

Once you do, that song becomes very doable.

I cried watching this. I'm still at medium for the moment, working on the Pull-Outs, and those frustrating Hammer-Ons - I just can't do it... need practice I guess...

Still, an incredible game.

Hammer Ons I find easy. Pull-offs are a bitch. I just got it Friday and find myself reading things with a beat and buttons in my head. Damn you, Guitar Hero. So, how is multiplay? Worth getting a second guitar for?

Abso-fuckin-lutely.

I got a 2 guitars package and I can't regret it.

Geez, there are a lot of safety precautions in the manual regarding using the guitar controller. Truly, the ROCK is a powerful force that must be respected.
"For external use only"
There's a manual?
Yeah, I think I'm one of the few nerds on the planet who reads a manual before playing a new game.

I tore through easy mode last night, getting five stars on most of the songs. A few tracks near the end had me sweating, though. The quick fret changes on No One Knows goofed me up every time. This game is buckets of fun.
Man, my first run through on Hard Cowboys From Hell I hit 98%. Sooo close. I went downhill from there.

I'd probably be a lot farther but I spend about 75% of the time replaying Take It Off and Texas Flood on Medium.
Someone here's gotta have video of themselves rocking out. Dont be shy, kids.
Okay, is it possible to 5-star Decontrol? It's the only song I don't have five stars for on Normal difficulty and it's driving me nuts. Do I even unlock anything cool if I have every song 5-starred?
It's possible. And yes, there's a special status and hilarious ending you get when you five star every song in a difficulty.
Well I finally did it. All the way through Expert. And I'm pretty much burned out. I probably won't play again until I can get some two player action or until GH2 comes out. But it was fun as hell.

Every song meaning the bonus songs as well ?

I'm currently stuck on Expert at No One Knows. I can't manage to do that ultra-fast green/red-green tapping during the chorus and it does me in every time. Any advice on that ?

Dammit, now I have to defeat that song. What's the score threshhold for five stars on the song? I had around 80K and got four stars. I'm up to 119,751 and am still stuck at four stars. Those really fast greens and reds fuck up my combo meter every single time.

What is your percentage of notes hit? I noticed when I was trying to do complete 5 stars in Medium that even if my note percentage was like 94 or 95% but I still got over 100,000 points then I got 5 stars, but in the harder levels, getting over 100k isn't hard considering how many notes you have to play, so it looked like percentage of notes hit played a bigger role in determining 5 stars or not.
I think it's a bit of everything really. Percentage of notes and note streak does seem to play a bigger part, but I kept getting four stars on Hard on You Got Another Thing Comin' even though I had more than 95% and 150 notes streak at least, and I only got the five stars when I broke through 200 000 points.
I don't know how many people use it (I kind of discovered this by accident) but that whammy bar will make your score grow exponentially if you use it right. Get to where you can hit it even on the shortest sutains and don't hold it, or tap it rhythmically (if you're going for points that is) but pop the hell out of it as fast as you can. I forget what song it was but it added like 70,000 or 80,000 points once I figured out the whammy bar.
I've been getting between 95 and 97% of the notes regularly, the only notes I miss are the annoying super-fast sections. I usually only use the whammy bar on star power sustains and if it fits the song (I probably overuse it on Texas Flood). There are a lot of sustains in Decontrol so maybe that will help.

My 5 star high score's 160,000. Those fast greens and reds, with Star Power on, are the bread and butter of that song.

And for the record, it's just points that determines 5 star ratings. I've gotten 5 star ratings on tracks with only an 80-85% note percentage.
The threshhold on Decontrol must be around 145K because I 5-starred it with 147K. Also, YESSSS!

"We are working on Guitar Hero 2, which will have 40-plus new tracks," Sumner told MCV. He also confirmed that genre spin-offs including Country Rock for the US and a Metal edition are on the cards. He even pointed to further possibilities for the peripheral, adding, "you could absolutely do a plug and play version".

Mister, you have made my fucking day. Been waiting to hear that for a long time.

I can't believe how much I still love this game.
God bless you, Red Octane.
Five or six more by the middle of next year? This is what I wanted to hear.
40 more songs ?

Metal edition ?

Funk yeah!!!!
Man could this day get any better? AWESOME news.
I'm so totally into that Country Rock edition idea, and I don't even listen to country outside of Johnny Cash!!!!

Seriously, it's so worth it. I've played it more (and had more fun with it) than any other PS2 game I've owned.... and I've had the system since it first came out.
Okay. If you think it's that good I'll get it first thing this saturday. Now I haven't seen this guitar controller so if I walk in to my local EB games store, am I going to be walking out with a huge-ass box?
Not huge, but about the size of a standard-guitar case.

I've considered this 'cause I really, really want Guitar Hero. However, I'm not sure I even have time for yet another system, what with the 360 finally getting some love this week...and my real guitar studies.

I've got the same dilemma. I'm so obsessive that I might as well spend that time actually getting better at "real guitar". It is a great game though, as I've played with my brother and his copy.

Worried you'll look like a dork? Don't. You'll just look like any other guy heading home alone to play a video game on a toy guitar.
Alright, so I fixed my PS2 and ready for GH but cant find the damn thing anywhere for less than 70 dollahz.

Anyone know of any place with a deal on it right now?
It's worth the $70. Trust us.

It's hard to find it cheap anywhere now... especially since the damn thing's so popular. But it's the best 70 bucks you'll ever spend on a game... you really won't regret it.
If anyone's curious, I think I read on Wal Mart's site that the extra guitar-controller is 40 bucks.
Gentlemen, I feel proud to be included in your company.

I have purchased Guitar Hero.

And love it.

That is all.
Interesting little app that lets you watch the frets get pressed as the song plays on your computer. All you need is this app, a PC DVD-ROM drive and a copy of Guitar Hero.

Instructions on the site.

As I struggle to get past 12% on Expert Cowboys From Hell I realize the sequel NEEDS to have a practice mode. It wouldn't be that hard. Break the songs into sections (intro, verses, chorus, etc.) and just put them on an unending loop.

I hate the guy in that Google video.
I'm itchy for a sequel and don't want to wait until E3 to find out when I get my next fix.
Any word if the new disks are going to be full price or have some sort of price cut? I imagine we mostly paid for the guitar the first time around so plopping down even 29.99 on a new game disk wouldnt be too bad.

The part that sort of bums me out is that if they go with "theme disks" it's going to leave out lots of other songs from other genres that we'd so desperately like to play.
that's a good point. i want 80s guitar hero so bad!

This just arrived in my inbox:

SUNNYVALE, Calif., April 17, 2006 – Get ready for a rock encore! RedOctane® announced today that Johnny Napalm and friends will begin touring the US again this Fall in the new videogame “Guitar Hero II™”. Picking up where Guitar Hero™ left off, Guitar Hero II arrives with a new track list, new venues and additional play modes – including the ability to transform the original Guitar Hero SG Controller into a rhythm, lead or bass guitar.

“Guitar Hero has proved phenomenally successful! Guitar Hero veterans will be able to plug in their Guitar Hero SG Controllers and rock GH II straight out of the box,” said Kelly Sumner, CEO of RedOctane. “We will really push the envelope with Guitar Hero II. Despite the fact there are many months until release, we’re already implementing exciting features and innovations. This fall we’re going to rock everyone’s world all over again.”

The top-secret sequel song list remains firmly in the rock domain, pulling from a mix of classic rock, ‘hair’ metal, heavy metal, modern rock, and alternative titles. More than 55 songs will be featured in the next installment.

Veteran music videogame developer Harmonix® Music Systems has been busy in-studio, enriching this rockstar experience with more features and multiplayer modes. In addition to the traditional head-to-head competition, Multiplayer Co-op Mode allows players to collaborate in order to beat songs, with each guitarist playing a separate guitar track. Available guitar tracks include lead, rhythm or bass tracks, depending upon the song. The Guitar Hero SG Controller used in the first installment will also be compatible with the new game.

Guitar Hero II is the follow-up to 2005’s award-winning release, “Guitar Hero,” which rocked the game industry and garnered a stack of awards including: “Best Offline Multiplayer Game 2005” and “Music Game of the Year 2005” from IGN.com, and “Best Soundtrack 2005” at the Spike TV Videogames Awards. Recently, it picked up five awards at the D.I.C.E. Summit's Interactive Achievement Awards including Outstanding Innovation in Gaming and Family Game of the Year.

RedOctane has confirmed an early glimpse of the upcoming game will be available during the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) in Los Angeles next month.

The game that has inspired a nation of wannabe rock stars to achieve video game greatness is scheduled for a new US tour on the PlayStation®2 computer entertainment system in November 2006.
