Favorite Creature Designs

My personal favorite is Mohawk from Gremlins 2. I can't even explain why exactly, but I just absolutely love the way he looks. If I had to pick a runner up it would probably be the Alien Queen from Aliens. It's one of the most menacing creatures that I can think of.

Moria Orcs from FOTR. the sheer variety is what interests me.

the other alien, the huge one infected, sitting at chair.

the Predator

The original Alien and the ROTJ Jabba were both great.

My #1 all time favorite, without a doubt, is Norris' severed spider-head in The Thing. Outstanding practical effect from a 23-year old movie, still gives me the willies.

any character from the Dark Crystal

The Predator is still one of the best creature designs ever.

Though its not really a "creature" design, ive always thought the makeup for Bub in Day of the Dead is the best zombie makeup ever done.

The vampire with the mouth in her stomach in From Dusk Till Dawn looks fantastic, and still freaks me out a little.

Every bit of work in Carpenters The Thing is fantastic.

I love the giant parasite alien from The Faculty.

And....the dragons in Reign of Fire are still the best looking dragons Ive ever seen. Though they never show enough of the practical ones.

Drago from Dragonheart.

Warrior Bugs from Starship Troopers.

The creature with the trunk that lived in Zorg's desk in The 5th Element.

Gollum.

The Acckley (sp)? in AOTC was pretty cool.

Cameron's Alien Queen.

Wak and Neek, from Explorers.

Fizzgig!

Harryhausen's Cyclops.

Vermithrax in Dragonslayer

The Balrog in Fellowship of the Ring

I don't know if this would classify as being a "creature", but I really loved the way Jason looked in Friday the 13th Part 7. That's the way he should always look.

I love the original Alien and of course the Alien Queen.

I love the elephants in ROTK (sorry, can't remember their "real" name).

Mumakils.

I like the earlier Jasons. He seemed so much more creepy when he was just a retard under there, rather than a rotting skull, although Savini's one in THE FINAL CHAPTER is cool.

The creature in the crate (Yeti?) in CREEPSHOW is a great design. Love it to bits.

Abe Sapien is pitch-perfect in design and execution.

Hellraiser's Skinless Frank and most of the cast of Nighbreed vy for Bob Keen's mantel as best creature designer of the 1980s, (with stiff competition from Bottin and his Thing of course.)

Rick Baker's humanised lupine creation for American Werewolf... is wonderful too.

And we can't forget Jack Pierce's iconic Frankenstein's Monster and most of Lon Chaney's self-harming work which are still devilishly compelling and effective despite being simple and crude by today's standards. Hard to deny their greatness.

And tongue guy from Day Of The Dead. Tongue. Guy.

Agreed. Best werewolf ever.

So true. That LONDON AFTER MIDNIGHT makeup is so amazingly creepy that I wish the actual film still existed.

No love for E.T.?

Harryhausen's Medusa from Clash of the Titans is also a classic.

ET is evil.

"Jaws" is still kinda cool, as is the deisgn of both Morla the ancient one and Falcor the luck dragon

Gmork from The NeverEnding Story--not the most articulate animatronic ever made, but it's used effectivly enough and looks scary enough that it lived in my nightmares for years as a child. Even now when I watch it I get a small shiver up my spine. There's just something about it that creeps me out. Might be the green eyes, might be the fact that it's a wolf the size of a pony, I don't know, but if we're going by terms of effectiveness, Gmork gets major props.

The Dark Crystal is chock full of great designs. My favorite (besides Fizzgig, which I so want to either be a real animal or at least a plush doll) are probably the Landstriders. They're so otherworldly and majestic, and the way they move...very surreal. Add in the those are guys in costumes that don't have eyeholes and they're having to run around on stilts on all fours, and it's damn impressive as well.

Just picked up the special edition of The Fly recently, and I must say the design of the final stage of BrundleFly has got to be one of the most disturbing live-action models ever put on film.

Echo the Dark Crystal love, and Labyrinth as well.

And having recently re-watch the LOTR appendices on the extended DVDs, lemme give a shout out to the Watcher in the Water.

I agree also about the Gmork and all the Dark Crystal creatures (sans Gelfings and Pod People), all things to stir the imagination.

I also love Tauntauns, Glenn Shadix in Planet of the Apes (shite version), the Star Trek II earwigs (including my beloved wife), as well as guilty pleasures like the Alien hybrid thing that gets sucked out the window in Resurrection, and the Gorax in the Ewok Adventure.

I don't think anyone's yet mentioned the Cave Troll in Fellowship, which is my favorite creature design in all of Lord of the Rings, and good evidence that Jackson will do well by Kong.
I'll second the Ackley or whatever it's called.

Pretty much everything in LOTR, but specifically Treebeard, the Fell Beasts, and Gothmog. All of the orcs are great, though.
I'm gonna have to go with Balrog as well. Just *loved* the sound design to go along with it as well. I agree though, Watcher in the Water looked great especially when you look at the details on the maquette.
It might not fit your definition of a creature, but I love the crawling guts from Dead Alive.
