I don't know that I'd agree that the original does do it better. If you saw the original first, of course, the remake is going to have less tension, because you know what's coming, more or less. But if you watch the Korean remake, you can see just how good the American one is by comparison. The American version also managed to apply a little more story logic than the original, which I appreciated.

Honestly, the only thing the Japanese version has over Verbinski's is that its climax TV-creature is more effective. The Japanese version solves the case with fucking MIND POWERS!

In all fairness, the mind powers thing is from the novel.
They even made it less bizarre for the film.

I just think the Japanese version has better pacing and score, and its simpler imagery is far more effective than the pretty-but-over-complex effects of Verbinski's version.
It's the subtler, more understated film.
