DVD Disc Rot?

What's the story on this? I've heard about it on a couple of different DVD related sites, and I think I remember hearing about it being a problem with LDs too, but until now I never gave it a second thought. Just yesterday I looked inside my DVD case and found three discs with odd looking blotches on them. These were discs that I bought brand new 2-3 years ago, watched once or twice, and then stored in the DVD case ever since then.

So does this sound like disc rot, and if so is there any way to avoid this happening to our favorite movies? Two of the movies that I checked seem to play okay, but I don't know how long they will stay that way, because they look kinda diseased. Could it be something to do with the fact that I keep them in a plastic CD case? It's one of those cases that holds about 30 discs. I rarely keep the original DVD cases because I need the space. Anyway, thanks for any advice.

I've had this happen to some of my CDs, mostly CD-Rs though, and none of them have ceased to play yet. Still, I guess I should make backups while I can.

*edit- Thanks for the link PSDS, I was wondering what caused that as well.

I've only had this problem with CDs that I kept in a CD wallet. I've never had the problem with CDs or DVDs that I keep in their original cases.
