Battlestar Confusion: US vs UK

I was in Best Buy the other day, drooling over the Battlestar Galactica (2005) season one set. Then I noticed another one on the shelf: The UK Version.

I need to make an informed purchase. Can anyone give me a good reason for buying the UK one? What's the difference, aside from the extras?

UK Version

American Version

I hate when this happens. I end up like a deer in the headlights and don't buy anything.

Based on what I've seen, the credits montage is different and the UK set doesn't have the mini-series, since that was released separately.

But DVD Compare is always a good thing to check in this case. Their breakdown reveals that the UK set doesn't have the commentaries you get on the US release, some of which are pretty good.

Thanks for the quick reply.

The packaging says that this is the UK set "formatted to be compatible" in the US and originally seen on "Sky One."

I'm wondering why they bothered. Are there fans who love the alternate opening so much that they're willing to sacrifice the extras & mini-series? And pay practically the same price? I think they were just a dollar or two different in the store.

In doing some research on this, I just found out that the original mini-series DVD had some extras that aren't in the season one package. Darn it. I refuse to double dip, but they make it so difficult sometimes.

The reason the UK version is there is because it came out over the summer, right before Season 2 actually started. So they thought they could get some uber-nerds who couldn't wait the 3 more months for the US version to come out.

I believe that the UK version is still actually region coded ... so I'm not positive it would actually work on your DVD player (unless it is region free). It's just encoded at NTSC vs. PAL I think. I'm not a 100% on that though.

As the first reply said though, the US version is the better release. I've recently purchased it and it's awesome. After the cliffhanger to end the first season and the subesequent one to end the first part of Season 2 (which will be out on DVD sometime in Dec. I hear) this show always has me jonesing for new episodes.
