Peter Weller... what happened?

Thread Starter
I was watching Robocop the other night on Spike and thinking this guy was great. If anything it seems like both Weller and Michael Keaton never got a chance to do bigger things.

Weller was strong in First Born, Banzai and Robocop. Perhaps Shakedown and that water beast film ended his chances.

He was also phenomenal in Naked Lunch.

I can think of at least two things wrong with that title.

He's now a professor of fine art and literature at Syracuse University.

He sold his soul for 'Wump jizz.

It really was a tragedy that he disappeared like that. He was a unique presence in movies, and deserved more work. Hopefully some young filmmaker who grew up watching him will pull him back into the spotlight.

Unless he wanted to disappear, in which case, good for him.

I kinda sorta want to go to Syracuse University just to take classes with him.

He's a pussy. Corey Haim took him out with a baseball bat, then he got his ass handed to him by the kid from E.T.

He then came back as Robocop, blasted Corey Haim skull with panache and a snappy line (best career move ever for Haim), threw that retarded kid in E.T. a 100 feet in the air so we could get another "flying in the moon" shot and then proceded to go teach at Syracuse University.

I knew Weller was done when I saw DECOY. When Robocop and the T-1000 can't team-up for a good film then what hope do any of us have in this cruel world?

I second Volta's statement about Weller's performance in Naked Lunch. He really nailed that role.

It's all because those bastards won't make a BUCKAROO BANZAI sequel.

He appeared in professor-form on the History Channel's special Rome: Engineering an Empire a few months back.

I was surprised to see him, as I didn't realize he teaching. Here's the thread I started about it.

I'm sure it was in an interview around the time of The Order (or The Sin Eater, whatever they ended up calling it) that he said his course always gets lots of applications from people who just want to be taught by RoboCop, but they all drop out when they realise how fucking difficult the course is and that he really is a proper professor, not just some celebrity gimmick.

Yeah, that sounds about right.

I'd like to see him in more flicks, as long as they don't have anything to do with Banzai. Or poorly-directed Heath Ledger religious super-thrillers.

No love for LEVIATHAN?

"Say aaahhh, motherfucker!"

hey don't forget also the guy was in that great show "odyssey 5". but of course, it was cancelled for no reason.

The only "super" in the Order was the crappiness factor.

I think he was also great in Of Unknown Origin. I love guy-being-driven-mad flicks, and Weller's was a really convincing descent.

I had no idea he was struggling until I saw Kiss, Kiss, Bang, Bang...

I understand he's wrapping up [I]Prey[I] now. Between that and the professer gig I think ol'Buckaroo is doing alright for himself.

It being a bit crap is a pretty good reason in my opinion.

I too miss Odyssey 5. Weller is clearly an intelligent guy, and he's been terrific in some smaller films like Naked Lunch and The New Age, while doing some DTV genre stuff.
excellent news about him joining 24, cannot wait to see that.

Glad to see someone mention the Peter Weller-starring film The New Age. I saw the writer/director present that movie at the local film school in Portland, OR, and he said the movie had been fucked over on promotion and distribution by the studio and that this one-night showing at the film school was going to be the only screening of the film in the Pacific Northwest.
