Assumingly, future updates will take care of the big omissions. Frustrating, but, fine.

What I'm really waiting for is the disturbance in the Force as millions of gamers cry out in terror as they find out that despite the compatibility, they can't transfer most of their old save states for these games to the 360.

About the only game I'll miss is the original Buffy game. That was the first Xbox game I ever played, and I still enjoy it. That the sequel, which blew to a degree hereunto thought unblowable before, got backwards compatibility instead is a real shame.

Pretty big list of titles no one is going to play on the 360 anyway.
a pretty big list of titles that no one would ever want to play on the 360. i've been pretty tolerant of M$'s bullshit surrounding this launch, but they've now officially dropped the ball. they should've concentrated on xbox live titles, since the whole fucking system is built around it. i can't play anything new that goes online ("xmen legends 2") or new stuff like "matrix: path of neo" or "the warriors", but goddamn, i can dust off my copies of "micro machines", "legends of wrestling" (double WTF?!!?) and fuckin' "he-man". wow.

I think they've done a really good job with it. Up until the announcement, news reports had us bracing for a list of just Halo, Halo 2, and Fable.

Also, I was pleasantly surprised to see stuff like Call of Cthulhu and Half-Life 2 on there. It was going to be hard to finish off both of them before the 360 launch, and I didn't want to rush. The only major series missing is Splinter Cell, as far as I know. I wish Morrowind was on it, since I never got the chance to play through it before.

I do think, however, that any decent game release from say October onwards should have been on the list. The games I picked up were, but I know not everyone was lucky in that.

And don't worry about those junk titles. They've said time and again how certain titles will become automatically compatible due to engine similarities between them and the big name ones. Barbie Horse Adventures isn't responsible for any game not being on the list.

i must respectfully disagree. barbie and he-man both conspired to keep good stuff off the list.

Of course Halo and Halo 2 are there. Did you guys know that both of those games will have enhanced graphics when you put them into the Xbox 360?
Backwards Compatability (BC) is useless without being able to transfer over saves from Xbox 180 to the 360, IMHO.

At least of the games that will be BC (with more to follow) they will all output at 720p and have Anti-aliasing (?) courtesy of the 360.
But, but...you'll still be able to play your original xbox games on your original xbox right?
Sssh. That's entirely too obvious.
I'm happy to hear the list is pretty extensive--the lack of Capcom Classics Collection kind of sucks, but oh well--if only because my Xbox seems pretty close to giving up the ghost. The damn thing's fan sounds like a jetliner taking off these days.

Yay for backwards compatibility, says I.
That's really swell that they wasted all their time on those stupid multiplatform and licensed titles. No, that's ok MS, don't bother with any of the exclusive Xbox games like Panzer Dragoon Orta and Jet Set Radio Future.
note that they don't mention whether or not these "emulators" will cost anything. Also not happy that none of my EA sports games that I bought in the last few months are on the list, but this should be expected. Why do that when they can make me pay 60 for updated versions?

If you don't have broadband for Live, the Q&A mentions that, through the Xbox site, you can order a disc of the emulators by mail for just the shipping fee. So these should all be free.

And where the shit is Burnout? Finally played that for the first time this weekend and was hooked instantly.

Quick story: I had the day off yesterday and near my house at my alma mater, Microsoft and a few other people were sponsoring a concert for the kids. They had game kiosks set up all over the place. No 360s, but tons of games. I entered the Halo 2 tourney and got my ass beat. I was mad, too - could have won a new cell phone!! Damn those pot smoking college kids!!
silly shaolin- why would they let you play the old ones if they're gonna try to get you to buy the new ones?
Funny how people come screaming at "M$" (or whatever dumb way they like to refer to Microsoft), ignoring the fact a lot of the smaller games are there due to programming issues. They may have chosen DOA3, Halo and some others, but a lot of the smaller games weren't "chosen". They started working naturally due to the emulation of other games.

The same applies to other games. You can bet there were many other games they wanted to have running on day one, but couldn't due to unique programming.

But hey, to expect people like that to use their brains is too much, i guess.

You can also download the emulators for free from xbox.com and burn your own CD.

Microsoft offers emulation for most of the xbox majors? They're evil.

Sony toys with screwing over the consumer with DRM and has lost a class action suit because many a PS2 broke down after a few months of use? They're great!
no, i'm mad at the fact that they should have focused on xbox live titles first. "half-life 2"? considering the apparent piss-poor job done on the port, they should've spent less time giving the code to microsoft for BC and more time, i dont know, making the game run at more than 8 fps.

and your mention of sony is the first time anyone even brought them up. no one said anything about them.
I know somebody already said this, but apparently some of you need it repeated; your XBox will still work after you get the 360. Microsoft will not send out men in black suits and sunglasses to disconnect it from the Internet. If you want to play your Xbox games, leave your Xbox hooked up. If you want to play your Xbox games on Xbox live, leave your Xbox hooked up. If you want to use the game saves from your Xbox, leave your Xbox hooked up. If you want to use the custom soundtracks from your Xbox, leave your Xbox hooked up. Microsoft is not robbing you of anything. Your Xbox will continue to function as it currently does.

And I love the way console people attack Microsoft for being a big, soulless corporation, as if Sony and Nintendo are some little mom-and-pop operations that are run out of garages somewhere in Minnesota. Sony owns a movie studio, guys. A movie studio.

Well, we'll simply need to purchase a 360 exclusive version of that line, obviously.

Agreed (and well said), but that is of course only if an individual's Xbox 180 doesn't crap out on them (only once so far for me!) or burn the house down (still working on that one!).

Oh, and ALL the game companies are soulless, capitalist pigs. No surprise there. They've all got various plusses and minuses in my book.
No Doom? No X-Men Legends? Kind of surprising.

BMX XXX? Didn't, like, two people buy that game?
Damn, I'll have to wait for a download to play my X-Men Legends 2 and Pscyhonauts, both games I haven't beaten yet. And I've turned in my Xbox already. I wonder how long the downloads will be for these updates. I wouldn't think the file sizes would be that big, right?

I thought only one person bought the game. You bought one too??

wait, i thought I was the only one.

Suspiciously missing is any explanation of the performance hit older X-Box titles will take thanks to requiring a "Software Emulator" - Specifically, will it be slower, faster, or seamless. Betting on "Slower", despite the jacked up 360 speed, as most emulators have a signifigant cpu overhead.

Fortunatly, as most pointed out, just keep the old x-box with it, and invest in a video switchbox to toggle between the games as needed.

Xbox.com: Will there be any benefits to playing original Xbox games on my Xbox 360 console?

Todd: Absolutely. One of the great things about gaming on Xbox 360 is the satisfaction of knowing that every game will be playable in high definition. We are now proud to reveal that this extends to the original Xbox games as well. Every original Xbox game will be upscaled to 720p and 1080i, and will take advantage of Xbox 360’s anti-aliasing capabilities, delivering a picture that is clearer and crisper than anything available on Xbox.

That's what I've been waiting to hear. I want a 360 (yup, I'm a flip-flopper) but didn't want to give up Ninja Gaiden. Yes, I know I can keep my original X-box, but some of us fund our new toys with the proceeds of our old toys, especially when trying to cut the actual money-paid-out down to a more reasonable number to the wife.

And they both traded it back the same day.
