King Kong: The Official Game discussion

I've been seeing commercials for this, and what I've been seeing seems very dissapointing. The frame rate seems really, really jerky, even in the commercial. I don't know anyone who's played the demo yet, but if it plays like it looks, I just might give this a skip and wait for the movie.

The demo underwhelmed me. The first person shooter section moved so s-l-o-w-l-y that it just bugged me. You're being chased by a T-Rex - think maybe you'd pick up the pace a little? Also, the aiming is for shit - especially when you're trying to throw a spear at a pterandon flying overhead.

The Kong segments just seem to be mindless button smashers, more concerned with providing cool looking gameplay footage for the in-store demo pods than with providing something playable.

So, yeah, it's a rental for me.

I pretty much agree - I've been playing it for the XBox and I'm hugely dissapointed in it. The framerate etc seemed fine for me though - it's just not particulary interesting to be honest. There's been nothing in the game which makes me want to pick it up again - not even the kong levels.

It's not the framerate, it's the actual speed with which your character moves. The game does a great job of setting up the urgency, the panic of that first T-Rex attack, but you then find yourself casually jogging away from it. I got killed over and over during the demo level because of either his sluggish trot or a complete inability to throw the spears with any accuracy.

I did it eventually, but by then all the immediacy of the situation had been bled dry and it was just a chore I had to complete to move on to the next bit.

It's also a huge pain when your character can't do anything the others can. Like Ann climbing around all over the place.

There are some things to like - Ammo is sparse and it really adds a 'Oh fuck I'm running out' feeling to things. And you can only get hit twice before you die. But chucking spears is hugely annoying and largely based on guesswork. You can zoom in for accuracy, but by the time you have some crazy scurrying little beast has had you.

Bummer.
