Love, love, love the new controller.

Played a little Call of Duty at my friends place. T'was fun. The smoke looks AMAZING.
I don't know that Nick has found a 360 yet because you can set it up before you get it. Here's mine:
http://live.xbox.com/member/Loapan

On a 2nd note does anyone know about this 2nd shipment Gamestop keeps telling me I'm on? I can't seem to get a straight answer out of them.

My mistake, Nick has one, I don't. But I set up a profile no less. I just need my 360 now.
Some stores have already gotten the second shipment. Unfortunately "second shipment" appears to mean "1-6 systems".
Your friends list is full Nick. Bastid.
Okay so I stopped by Gamestop to see if there were any 2nd shipment 360's and they gave me mine. I am up now. I need to send Jacob Singer a friend invite.
Not having my own, the only comment I can really make is what I've seen in demo units. And since they're made to show off the 360, the only truthful assessment I can give is on the controller. So here it is:

Fan-fucking-tastic.

Seriously, it took an already great S-type design and made it better by eliminating those infernal white and black buttons. Having the shoulder + trigger setup is beautimous, plus it even feels nice. Sony's got a lot of work to do if they want to make the banana controller even come within spitting distance of the 360 controller.

So that's my inital sorta-thoughts on the 360. I'll hold off on owning one until the Xmas season is past and I have disposible income again.

I posted this in the "WTF are you currently playing" thread, figured I'd copy it to this one too.
------------------------

Well, it's all 360, all the time at Casa de Singer. I picked up a total of 7 games for the system (5 in the bundle, and 2 more after trading in a bunch of crap). It's gonna be hard to go back to 480p now (just imagining what Shadow of the Collossus could look and play like on a next-gen system is semi-depressing).

So anyways, here's some quick thoughts on what I'm currently playing. I'm playing all these on a 57" hi-def Toshiba with 5.1 Dolby Digital surround (it's nice being divorced).

King Kong: More fun than the demo let on, and it's flat-out gorgeous on the 360. And I haven't even gotten to the 'play as Kong' part yet. I'd say an 8 out of 10 so far. We'll see.

Call of Duty 2: It's the one must-own for the 360 right now. Stunning. But one of my Thanksgiving guests finished the Russian and English campaigns and was halfway through the American, all on the Friday after turkey day... Still, 10/10.

Project Gotham Racing 3: I'm no racing gamer, so my opinion here is probably worthless, but it's fun, beautiful, and easy to get into. Still, it's my second-least-played launch title. 8/10.

Madden '06: Only bought it because I traded in all my other football games. I've played exactly two quarters of a game, and I can say it was definitely pushed out the door too early. There's potential with the new engine, but this game ain't it. 6/10.

Perfect Dark Zero: Fun, quirky fps that doesn't seem to take itself too seriously. Has some frame-rate issues and 'screen-tearing' problems, but I'm really enjoying it so far. It needs a better, more thorough training mission, though, one that actually explains some of the many stealth options. I had to go to the manual to find out how to turn on my flashlight. But it's set up so that you can re-play missions with ease to try different approaches. 9/10.

Condemned: Criminal Origins: Probably my favorite launch title. Repetitive? Perhaps, but I love every second of it. I wish the investigative portions weren't so scripted, but that's a minor complaint. Another game, like Kong and Call of Cthulhu on the Xbox, that you need to play in the dark. 9.5/10

GUN: I'm kind of saving this one to play later, so no score, but I like what I've seen so far.

Well, looks like I'm sending mine off for repair. Almost every time I go to shut it down the light will go off, but at least one of the fans will keep running. I thought that maybe a fan would stay on after shutdown to cool the system off if it was particulary hot, but after 45 minutes the fan or fans were still running and the box seemed warmer than before I shut it off. I don't think that I've had the thing on for more than 20 minutes at a time, plus it's in a well ventilated area.

The customer service rep I talked to told me that they hadn't had any issues with the fans running even after shutdown, so they were going to treat it as an overheating issue. It'll take 24-48 hours for repair and 24-48 hours to get it back to me, so that's not too bad.
Good luck.
Screen tearing... Is that sort of like digital blur Jake? I've noticed some strange breakup here and there, but it's not that tough to get past.

"Screen-tearing" is when the vertical synch of a game doesn't match the refresh rate of the monitor or television it's being displayed on. Usually the game is drawing frames at a rate faster than the refresh rate of the display, so instead of dropping frames (which would cause a game to 'stutter') the synch is dropped so that there's no slowdown. This results in horizontal screen "tearing", where there will be a moving line across the screen in which the upper and lower portions of the image don't quite match up right.

Some people would rather have the tearing than the slowdown, and don't seem to mind so much. To me it depends on how often it happens. It's not really bad in PD0, but it is noticeable.

This is also being reported as being pretty common in the Madden game for the 360.

Mine did this to, but my charge and replay kit was still plugged in. I unplugged it and the fan stopped running. Don't know if this is the same thing you had but it sounds similar so I thought I would post it.
That's true, if you have a battery pack plugged in the system senses it and goes into a standby type mode instead of truly shutting down.
So apparently JC Penney has bundles available for $800...

I'm wondering if I should order one from them, play it for 59 days (they say they have a 60-day return policy), and then return it. Anyone have experience with JC Penney and their return policy? If I "break the seal", am I unable to return it? Inquiring minds want to know!
Wow that's quite a bundle. 800 for the system and nothing else.
What the hell? Does the total on an extra controller, battery pack, remote, and play and charge kit really add up to $400?!

Or is there a game or something included that I'm missing.

Thanks, that did it. I was leaving the charge and play kit plugged in.

For fuck's sake....I can't believe I'm so stupid.
I have a feeling it's even worse than that. Want to bet it's just the premium 360 and the play & charge kit? The kit comes with a battery, the premium with a controller and remote.
Well, for what it's worth, I called them to check, and apparently I can play it for 60 days, and then return it with all the original packaging, etc. Doesn't need to be sealed, etc. Both their policy listed online, and their helpful customer service personnel told me the same thing. So, I'll snag one, play it til February, and then either take it back, or get them to price match the freakin' thing. In the meantime, I'll just have to lay off the money salads, I guess.

Quick question: When you click on your Gamertag, there are blank spaces for four achievements there, but I can't figure out how to put any of mine in there. Anyone know what that's about? It's the four little squares with the grayish icon of an award cup with a little lock over it.
Hooked up my console tonight to make sure my TV could display 1080i, and farted around a bit with the dashboard and Hexic. Also took Halo 2 for a spin, and definitely noticed a bump in the visuals.

Anyway, I won't be playing any games until Christmas Eve, but here's my gamertag link if I'm not already on your Friends list:

Evidently, Penney's has cancelled all orders, and has stopped carrying the merchandise. Weird. Mine was cancelled as well, so if anyone is selling a Platinum at a reasonable price, lemme know.

I emailed their customer service department back when the 360s first went up, asking for a clarification of the "bundle" contents. Finally got the reply today, which totally avoids answering my question:

Thank you for contacting us online.
Our Xbox items sold out in less than one hour. We will not be
receiving any more this year. We apologize for the
inconvenience.
We hope you will give us the opportunity to continue to serve
you.

For those who have played both - what's the better game: PGR3 or NFS:MW? Buying one of the two as a Christmas Gift for someone and I'm not really sure which one is more preferable.

Not that anyone has actually gotten one yet, but there are conflicting reports that it A) comes with 5 games, or B) comes with nothing extra. There are a couple of folks over at FatWallet whose orders haven't been cancelled yet, so I'm waiting to see what they actually get.
For all that is pure and holy, get on Xbox Live this second and download Geometry Wars. The most addictive game I've played in a LONG time.
Malli has something over 200,000 points in that god damned game, I don't get it.

As soon as you can check out this game, even if you just download the free trail, do so. The game defines HD and is super fun, and really crazy.
Yeah, I got around 325,000 points on it last night.
I'm up to like 260,000 now. I will not quit until I get a Top Ten score.

Once you pass the 200k mark it's just a beautiful mess of crap. I constantly lose place of where I am and I get headaches...but this is the first game I play when I fire up the system.

Loving CoD2 online. It's unfortunately taking away from my PDZ time. Theo nly thing that sucks about CoD2 online....is that it's nearly impossible to invite a friend to play.

Fuck.....now I wanna play Geometry Wars.
I'd join you with the COD2, but I'm waiting until Christmas time for someone else to get it for me, or else I'm losing the fucking 52' HDTV I bought that won't fucking arrive.
I finally finished PD0 last night. What a fucking ludicrous story. I realize that wanting more plot in a Rare FPS is like expecting a nuanced porn, but I digress.

Anybody interested in some co-op over Live in the near future?

Love the porn joke, and yes, I'd be up for some co-op. I should probably play more of the single player first, though.

OMG, you can do co-op over Live? Damn, I feel ashamed I didn't know that. I was fortunate enough to score a 360 on Thursday, and picked up PD0 today. Once I get into it a bit more, I'm definitely down for some of this action.
I hate you all for having one when I don't.

I'll just pretend to play PDO with my one controller and no system. It's fun!
So is it true there's a way to change your gamertag in Live Marketplace for a small fee?

Cool, want to co-op? I don't have any controllers. I hope that's ok :-/

Ditto to thecallahan Hopefully sometime in the next week or so one will roll my way somehow.
Oh jesus god, PDZ's story is just getting stupid. Not even funny bad, just plain ugly.

On a plus note, as soon as a certain someone gets shot in the face, the game really seems to pick up. For example, the next level is a direct rip off of the big shell from MGS2, and is alot of fun so far. Here's the kicker. Right as the level starts, you're attacked by two brothers who happen to be cowboys. You know nothing about them, there is no setup. You're just attacked by cowboys. It's awsome.

Cowboys malli, cowboys!
Ya...I saw your message and it confused me. I thought you were playing too much GW.

I haven't been putting any time into PDZ at all. Which saddens me since I have waited 5 damn years and 2 freakin' generations for this game.

I'm addicted to everything but PDZ.
Yeah, I know... There's still hope. Just wait until you get to where I am and it gets tough to stop playing.
EDIT: Deleted because I am lazy and did not read all the threads and there is an entire thread dedicated to someone suing MS over 360 glitches.
So guys, how's the Perfect Dark multiplayer? Is that a let-down as well? Is it as customizable as the old one? Can you create your own character like the N64 one? Blah blah blah and etc., online/offline, I'm just looking for some info. Hell, if any websites have detailed multiplayer details, let me know. Much like Malliabu, I've been waiting for this game for forever, and would like to hear that's not a total wash.
The multiplayer is HUGE. All of it works well, most of all the one life rounds of Dark Ops class matches. You don't need to read up on the multiplayer at all, I can tell you right now that it won't let anybody down, in any way.
It appears that after years of hype one thing is clear:

Nobody really gives much of a damn about the X-BOX 360.
Not enough of them out there to talk about.
So, rush it to market but don't supply enough of them pre-Christmas. I don't get it.
