Tombs of the Blind Dead

Straxboy weaves his wordy magic on cult Euro-sleaze. Epic reading material for the vocabulary-enriched.

Awesome, love those movies.

That was a brilliant review, Straxboy. I haven't seen any of the Blind Dead films but I'm going to make sure I check out that collection as soon as I get some spare cash.

I "blind" bought the set myself when it came out.....................and it was definitely worth every damn penny!!!

One thing: John Carpenter clearly lifted the "corpse rising" scene for The Fog from the first film in the series, kind of surprised more people don't notice that, or mention it if they do.

"Almost granular" is a brilliant line.

Thanks all.

Re: the morgue scene - I think I touched on that somewhere amid that morass of verbage but, yeah, you're right, Carpenter's quite plainly a fan. DVD Maniacs noted that in their review too (thanks Google!)

But then Carpenter's always been influenced by the non-conformist touchstones: Hong Kong magical cinema like Mr Vampire, Zu Warriors and Spooky Encounters before Big Trouble In Little China (sure he didn't write the picture but...) and now this influence on The Fog, which appears less than 5 years after the last Blind Dead picture was shot. It's a shame more interviews with Carpenter don't try and delve into these unconventional choices - it makes a change from an endless parade of (warranted) TCM/DOTD devotees.

All I'd like this review to do is convince readers to perhaps check out some pictures beyond the cannon or the 'expected' Top 10. That 'imaginary 10' is unlikely to be challeneged to any great degree, but the context of Ossorio's pictures within the genre is something sadly not much dicussed. Rent them, borrow them, but I defy anyone with a more broad interest in the genre than "casual fan" not enjoy the hell out of at least Return Of The Evil Dead.

What a fuck of a lot of words.

They do sound like those very special hidden gems that I in my youth used to trawl through hours of straight to video dreck trying to discover.

Next time I want a Portuguese crypto-fascist rape zombie film I know exactly where to go. Thanks!

F***ing brilliant, Strax! Truly! One of the better reviews I've read in a while.

I hope 'The Blind Dead Collection' U.S. version stands up. I picked it up when I bought the 'King Kong Collection'.

Thanks, G.

It's better, I guess (both for non-English dub fans - you get the Spanish versions and the English version of all 4 films I believe - and rape fans - you get 16 seconds more tit sucking!).

Also, you get a wicked cool coffin box while we get some cardboard.

That should light up the Dread Central boards.

There's also an obvious Dario Argento/Goblin influence on Halloween. Speaking of films influenced by Argento, how about De Palma's Dressed To Kill. That film practically oozes the influence.

I do agree that someone should really mention these influences in an interview with Carpenter. It would be interesting to hear what his thoughts are on these films. The only one I have ever really heard him talk about lovingly out of the ones mentioned above is Zu Warriors.

Also, anyone else notice the similarity between the horseback chase in this and the Ringwraiths chasing after Arwen/Frodo in The Fellowship of the Ring?

1. I'm not that big of a LOTR geek, but if memory serves me, Peter Jackson explicitly mentioned TOBD as an influence.

2. American slasher films are a diluted form of the Gialli genre anyway, so influences, whether direct or indirect, are to be expected.

Imdb.com sez that Pedro Almodovar is supposed to be in Return of the Evil Dead.
Has anyone managed to spot him, i sure as hell can´t.

Farmer #2. Good luck with that...there's loads of them. I guess the one with impressive 5 o'clock shadow would be a good starting point.

I hadn't read that Jackson tidbit. Glad to know I'm not pissing in the wind...

The Blind Dead films are great but i´m a bit bothered by the rapescenes, they make the director seem like a perv.

For anyone that picked up the Blue Underground set- apparently there's a couple of glitches in it- you can get replacement discs- check Blue Underground's site for info about that.

Little bit of a pain in the ass, but damn I want that coffin set.
