Is it time to consider KINGPIN a comedic masterpiece?

When I first saw KINGPIN years back it just didn't click with me. As time went on I'd catch little bits of it here and there and found myself laughing more and more. Recently I watched the film from start to finish and while many consider it a funny movie it doesn't really get mentioned ad nauseum like ANCHORMAN, THE BIG LEBOWSKI, or CADDYSHACK. I feel it's time for that to change.

There are great gags all over this flick. People always talk about Cameron Diaz's hair from THERE'S SOMETHING ABOUT MARY but that came a full 2 years after Woody Harrelson milking and drinking from a cow that wasn't much of a cow at all in KINGPIN. Add to that the bits with the snake handler, Chris Elliot with his Robert Redford-like wig, Rabdy Quaid's teary reaction to the litterbug Indians, and Roger Clemens playing a character named Skidmark and the hits never seem to stop.

Then we come to Bill Murray as Earl McCracken. I don't think he has an unfunny moment in this thing. The way he casually mentions his room number to a woman getting his autograph is just perfect. He's got great lines every time he opens his mouth but if I had to list one I'd go with "It's a small world when you've got unbelievable tits Roy."

I caught the end of it a few days ago and watching Bill Murray take Roy's hand and throw it in the crowd proves to me that he shits charisma.

It's certainly way up on my list, if for nothing else than coining the phrase "Pump 'n Dump".

The part where he drink the fresh "milk" is still priceless.

I think it's hit and miss, but indeed, once Bill Murray shows up, he hits it out of the park. The biggest laughs come from his hair alone- a massively elaborate combover.

Some Like It Hot - comedic masterpiece.

This is Spinal Tap - comedic masterpiece.

A NIght at the Opera - comedic masterpiece.

Kingpin - funny in places, dry in others.

I personally wouldn't call Kingpin a comedic masterpiece, but it did have it's funny moments. A very good comedy with a great comedian (Murray).

bill murray comedy gold, and the ads from the foundation which take care of childs with hot moms is priceless.

Believe it or not I just saw Kingpin for the first time a week ago. Before I'd only caught glimpses of it on cable. Having seen the movie, I concur that it's really funny, but lacking something to knock it into the 'comedic masterpiece' category.

Ska and Blues Traveler in the music credits of a 'music heavy' pseudo road-movie really dates it; I would have thought that the Farrelley's would have had some foresight as to not do that to a film.

Aside from that, really funny.
It's still my favorite of all the Farrelley brothers' movies.
I haven't seen this in ages, the only thing I remember is the brawl between Vanessa Angel and Woody Harrelson in the parking lot, I think she won, after getting her tit's pummeled like a speed bag.

In light of the Comedy Knock Out thread, I thought I'd give this a bump.
even though i'm on somewhat of a mission to eliminate this movie from the knockout, its just because i think its far too hit and miss to be called a great movie, which is pretty typical for the farrelleys.
It's my favorite of theirs. It's funny. It's not up there with Grosse Pointe or Swingers.

Not a masterpiece.
I think the word "masterpiece" gets bandied about way too much. I enjoy the hell out of The Towering Inferno, but I'm not about to call it a masterpiece.
Yes it is(and always has been IMO)a comedic masterpiece, it's just not everybody's cup of tea, and that's fine by me.

By the way, it's high time for you to show your support for it in the current knockout Moltisani. It could use your help in there... right now!
It's a lot better than the vastly overrated SOMETHING ABOUT MARY, but not an all-timer.

Murray really is amazing in it, though.

I'd like to but it's tough to vote a lot while at work. Then by the time I get home I see that stuff I enjoy is on the brink of elimination, like THE NAKED GUN.

(while Roy throws up in the toilet) Landlady: "What is it about good sex that makes me have to crap? You really jarred something loose tiger."

Maybe not a masterpiece, but it's my favourite Farrelly Brothers movie.
It's a really funny film, but comedic masterpiece? Sorry, but no.
"I mean, I didn't want to get beat by a guy with one hand."

"Does this mean you're against the homeless?"

"What? Yes. No. I don't know, I don't care, I'm rich!"

Anyway, I dig the hell out of it.

And is Fletch a comic masterpiece? I hope so.

I liked Murray, but in my one viewing the rest fell a little flat. Perhaps I need to watch it again.

Def my favorite Farrelly Bros. flick w/ Dumb & Dumber a close second...
Murray owns this movie & it definitely hits all the F Bros. comedy notes:
1. Handicapped jokes
2. Animal abuse
3. Body fluids
4. Road trip

Time to reconsider? I say yes! It's such a great, mean-spirited comedy and Murray totally owns it.

Sad to see how far the Farrellys have fallen...

I don't think it quite hits the 'Masterpiece' territory, but its up there. Murrays friendly hair is the best, especially at the final bowl. things just got a mind of its own

Definitely my favorite Farrelly Brothers movie, largely on the strength of Murray's performance (in his top five, I'd say). Harrelson and Quaid are great too, and Vanessa Angel manages not to embarrass herself while looking insanely hot. I was always impressed with how dark the movie allowed itself to get, best summed up in this exchange:

Roy: "How's life?"

Neighbor: "Taking forever."

Also, it's dated but the soundtrack used to get a lot of play with me.

Lynn Shaye is probably(with the exception of some women in early John Waters movies)the most disgusting woman in the history of movies as the Landlady,

"What is it about good sex that makes me want to take a dump?"

Not a masterpiece. Murray owns this movie as you said. I saw it as a teen so I should look it again. I couldn't believe how great was the scene with Murray adopting sons with incredibly hot mothers, his smirk face was perfect.

I still prefer Dumb and Dumber, but I have to admit this grew on me a lot when I saw it a second time. Not a masterpiece, but very underrated and for my money, heaps better than There's Something About Mary.

The Farrely's career trajectory is like the comedy equivalent of M. Night's, it seems.

One of my favorite comedies - It's just the right combination of silly and mean.

I always love the little moment at the beginning when Big Ern puts sugar in Roy's tank.

"Whaddya have that big bag of sugar for, Mr. McCracken?"
"*long pause* Didn't I tell you... To call me Ernie? Or Big Ern? It's for my morning coffee."

I prefer Dumb and Dumber, but this is extremely close behind that one. This is three actors at the top of their comedy game. It results in a movie that is endlessly quotable.

Reporter: Ernie what do you have to say about this paternity case?

Ernie: Oh, that's nothing. I pulled out of her way early. Yeah....nothing there. Sorry.

Ismael: A cloud of shit?!?!? Run everyone, there's a shit cloud coming!

And the end of Woody's fantasy. It has him giggling on the floor throwing money, while Randy Quaid laying on the bed with an ice pack on his ass, and rinsing his mouth out with vodka (i think)......Makes me laugh my ass off every time. This is by no means a masterpiece, but it's one of my personal favorite comedies.

I don't know if Kingpin is a comedic masterpiece or not, but I do think it's funny as hell.

Don't know about masterpiece but it's one of my favorite comedy films.
