Hot PC games for Xmas

Anyone play F.E.A.R., Call of Duty 2 or Brothers in Arms: Earned in blood? I wondering if any or all of the above are any good and specifically how they stack up against each other as FPS since I may ask for 1 or 2 for Xmas.

I played the demo for Call of Duty 2 (got it in PC gamer), and it was amazing.

F.E.A.R. is good game, but it's a system hog. It also rips off a lot of stuff from other games and movies, and the environments are pretty repetitive. It's worth playing though, mainly due to the very good enemy artificial intelligence.

I've only played the demo for Call of Duty 2; it's pretty good, but I've heard that the full game isn't that much of an advancement over the first one.

Earned In Blood I haven't played, but I've heard it's pretty short and isn't much different than Road to Hill 30.

COD 2 is my fave, and probably the most bang for the buck if you're into multiplayer. They're all decent single-player experiences, but any of them can be finished in a weekend.

Having played through the demos of both F.E.A.R. and Call of Duty 2 a while back I'd have to say that F.E.A.R. left a longer lasting impression on me. The A.I. response in F.E.A.R. is spot on, enough to provide a real challenge. Call of Duty 2 actually threw me a couple of suprises as well, but a major turn-off was the Regenerating Health feature, which belongs in no WWII FPS. Of course, F.E.A.R. had its liberal use of bullet time, though.

My money is on F.E.A.R., followed closely behind by Call of Duty 2. I'd discount Brothers In Arms, just for the WWII FPS glut they've contributed to.

I mean seriously, does anybody need another iteration of Medal of Honor? Especially if it falls under the 'American Down Home Boy Becomes War Hero Through Every Single Front In The European Theater' mold. I've got two words for those gamers: Korsun Pocket.

FEAR is good...but not as good as Half-Life 2. If you haven't played that yet, get that first

Edit: OK, never mind. I didn't read the post.

My take on FEAR:

This game's pretty well made and has some outstanding features and moments, but goddamn what uninspired environments and level design. I felt like I was in the same office building for DAYS. It also gets a bit samey -- fight the same 4 or 5 goon models, have some scary moments, repeat.

It held my interest, but it ain't a 9.

Civilization IV. There is a plethora of titles to choose from, old and new. Don't just focus on what's "hot"

FEAR was good. It is basically the same thing over and over again, however. But the fact is that the shootouts are the best from any shooter ever, that is OK. It is not as scary as people hold it out to be, but that is not a problem for me. I do think the performance could be better. I have a beast rig, and it ran fine for me, but you better have a graphics card that is not more than a year old or you will watch a slide show.

I think an excellent shooter is Quake 4. Maybe not revolutionary as it comes to multiplayer, but the single player is like being in a big budget sci-fi action movie. Loved it. Also if you can run Doom 3, your computer will run this like butter. For my tastes and preferences, I thought it was much better than FEAR (but like minds may disagree).

For RPG lovers try the criminally underrated Vampire-Bloodlines. Be sure to download the 1.2 patch before beginning and you will be set. One thing to note is that while it looks like a shooter, it is actually a very hardcore RPG. You got to think hard about how you want your character to develop and then play him/her that way.

Yeah, something like that.

Haven't played FEAR, but CoD2 is pretty much CoD1 with very slightly upgraded graphics. It's fun, but hardly breaks any ground and I can't imagine playing it again once I'm finished, except for the occasional setpiece battle (think Stalingrad in the first one).

Really, there aren't any truly great FPS games out this Christmas. I'd say go for something older or in a different genre.
