Xbox 360 Component Cables

First post, loooong time lurker, so don't be too mean if I'm in the wrong forum. I thought it was more suited than the Home Theater thread. I picked up the 360 Component cables yesterday and have had some trouble with the signal. When I turn the component switch to HDTV on the cables, the signal is black and white and snowy. If I turn it to regular TV, it comes in fine, but not in HD or even S-Video quality of my PS2.

I called Xbox Support and they claimed it to be the cable. I exchanged it, and same problem. They tried to tell me my TV didnt support component cables, but if not, why does it have the hook ups? Or the book state it supports 1080?

So my question is if anyone else has this problem? Or a solution? I also have a HDTV digital cable box. I considered running the component cables from the cable box to the TV, then the 360 into the cable, but I'm not sure that will work.

Any help?

Hey BillyG, welcome to the world of posting.

I haven't had any trouble with my component cables (Mad Catz, I believe) that I got for $20 at GameStop. When I first hooked mine up, I had a couple of the cables reversed, and I experienced the wacky signal you're looking at. The vertical hold was all screwed up, and the image was black and white. So, I'd suggest you make sure you've got your R,G, and B going into the appropriate inputs on your TV.

If your HDTV cable box works well, I'd try swapping the cables from the cable box with the 360. If that doesn't work, then there's something amiss. You could also try hooking the 360 up two different ways; try hooking it up to the S-Video input on your TV AND the component video input on the TV. Set it up for 1080i via the S-Video input, and then switch your TV to see how it looks. If it's messy, try reconfiguring it for one of the lower resolutions and continue to experiment.

Hopefully one of these suggestions will work out for you. Good luck

Do you have an HDTV? If not, that would explain the snowy picture.

There is a switch on the Xbox 360 hi def cables, you can set it for either normal or hi-def televisions.

Yup. It's a little switch on the Xbox side of the cable.

How old is your TV? Some TVs have component inputs but no HD support.

Thanks Phoenix. All the RGB are in the correct spots. I even reversed them in case they were cased wrong. My TV does support HD, it runs in 1080i with my cable box.

I already know about the HD switch guys. Like I said, when I flip it to regular TV it works fine. When I put it in HD the vertical goes crazy. I'll try running it through the cable box next I suppose.

I've got the same exact setup, but I've yet to try hooking it up. If I experience the same problem, I may just hook it up through my Shaw box, as I only have one video signal thingy. Try unplugging your cable for a sec, my tech told me I might not be able to play with the digital cable screwed in because I only have room for one video signal or something to that effect.

Try it, tell me how it works out.

I know I had a TV once that had 3 component inputs but only one of them would accept a HD1080i signal. Try plugging it into the same one as the cable and see what happens then.

All,

Does the Xbox 360 support DVI or HDMI cable hook ups?

Thanks,

Matt

HDMI is all I know. It may support the other.

HDMI....sweet.

I hooked up on an $80 HDMI Toshiba DVD player from Costco and it looks really nice on my Big Screen.

Thanks

I don't believe there's an HDMI cable available just yet.

There's no HDMI support that I'm aware of, only VGA.

Sheet...too bad....considering the hard-on the BIG M has for HD, I'm kinda suprised. That is not to say that component cables are bad....

Thanks
