So I'm just wondering...Kong seems to be underperforming (although it's way too early to tell) and there were scores of other remakes this year as well: House of Wax; Yours, Mine and Ours;Flight of the Phoenix; The Amityville Horror; Assault On Precinct 13;Guess Who;The Producers; The Longest Yard; The War of the Worlds;Charlie and the Chocolate Factory; The Bad News Bears and The Fog...

So, Im wondering...what are peoples opinions on re-makes in general?
About half of the movies on this list made a profit, so people seem to be going to see some of them.

Is nothing sacred anymore and is HollyWood truly this creatively bankrupt, and are you sick of the remake machine?

It's not just remakes, it's sequels too. I understand if there's 7 books to adapt, but who the hell wants 7 Shrek movies? Other than the executives that will be buying nations with the profits, of course.

If nothing else, I love the internet because someone calling himself Assclown uses the word ennui.

Back on topic, remakes are nothing new in showbiz. You could say it's a bit like various theatre companies performing the same play. Some interpretations will be great, some pointless and some downright horrid.

The problem is that unlike plays, movies cost a lot of money. And for every remake that gets greenlit an original work doesn't.

On the other hand, I'd take the based on a theme park ride "Pirates of the Carribean" any day of the week over the original "Stealth"

Not to nit-pick, but you only listed bad remakes in your post. I know that, that, shouldn't directly influence people, but it made me think.

The Dawn of the Dead remake, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, King Kong (I'm sure), and a few others have been good.

No movie seems to be completely original anyway, what with adaptations from books and inspirations/homages from older movies, remakes have just as much room for adaptation and to be "good" as an "original" production.

Now feel free to tear me apart.

I've warmed to remakes over the years. Kaufman's Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Cronenberg's The Fly, Carpenter's The Thing (looking at SF alone) etc. are all great pieces of work that progress their prototypes.

I’m more frustrated with made-from-TV (Lost in Space) or made-from-computer-game (Tomb Raider) nonsense right now.

Actually, I listed ALL of the remakes that came out this year. But I forgot about Mr. and Mrs. Smith, my apologies for that omission.

I went to see the remake of Kong and the previews were for remakes of Miami Vice and Poseidon Adventure. It's like Hollywood is crawling up its own ass, all Oroborus and shit.

I've given up fighting them, they're gonna keep coming as long as there's any lapse in original ideas, and i've come to think that it's better to hope the best for each one just like every other movie.

And yes, for the record, I think most of my unconditional surrender is owed to my ever-increasing love of the Dawn of the Dead remake.

It would be nice if they were novelites again.

Excuse me, fellas, but Mr. & Mrs.Smith was a remake of... what exactly?

Ahem, just because a movie has a similar title than a Hitchcock 30's classic doesn't mean it's a new version/re-imagining (damn you, Tim Burton, for that friggin' word) or whatever they want to call it these days. Even though its influences were obvious, nobody said it was a remake.

As for me, same here as with others. I'm not as tired or ennuyé -now THAT's pedantic- with remakes as with videogame adaptations. This year as always it's been normally hit-or-miss with me (for instance, I loved the new Assault on Precinct 13 but I couldn't find the point of Bad Santa 2/ School of Rock 2... I mean, Bad News Bears) but I'm rapidly growing weary with dumb videogame adaptations.

I mean, why don't they try just try instead to make movies out of cereal box characters? Or crappy stand-up routines? Or fucking amusement park rides?

Uh... nevermind.

Count Chocula, the movie, would kick major ass. I imagine it as a hard R thriller starring Bruce Campbell. Deavid Fincher will obviously direct.

I have no problem with the concept of remakes because you have a chance to take less-than-stellar originals and piggyback on the premises in order to give an artist a springboard into interesting areas. Stuff like THE FOG is great, byt people like Rupert Wainwright aren't the ideal people for that sort of thing. I would have been up for a re-imagining of YOR'S, MINE AND OURS if, as the newer posters hinted, the kids all became ZOMBIES.
