Stupid Live Questions

So, I finally got a cable modem today, and plan on hooking up Live tonight. I've got some general questions, keep in mind I have NEVER played a game online and until my computer arrives in a couple days have had a five year old piece of crap collecting dust.

Got my X-box in the front room, computer in the back, so I'm going to put the splitter thing and modem in the front room with an ethernet cable to the X-box and then put a wireless router in the backroom. That sound right?

As far as Live goes, what's the best/quickest/easiest way to get an account and how soon is it active? Still like $50 a year?

Any gaming etiquette I should be made aware of? How quick can I jump into a Halo Deathmatch? Headset preference?

That's it for now, but I'm sure I'll have more. Thanks in advance.

***edit***

I know in the time it took me to post this I could have probably found the answers myself, but I want other people to do it for me.

Buy a Starter Kit.

Immediately.

Yup. There's a monthly option too, though. $6 a month.

No matter how bad you're doing, don't quit.

Other than that, treat fellow players like you treat them in real life. Except when they're the other team, and you're trying to kill them, of course.

A minute. But, you're gonna want to download the extra maps first.

The official Halo 2 headset that goes directly into the ear is best. But, can't go wrong with the one that comes in the starter kit, either.

Don't split the line before it runs into the router -- go directly from modem to router, then run one line to the Xbox, another to the PC. This is assuming your wireless router has the typical four ethernet ports on the back in addition to wireless capability.

The absolute easiest way takes nothing but that little two-month free trial ticket that came with your copy of Halo 2 (at least, mine did). You don't really need a starter kit to get on live at all, it just comes with some prepaid months and a headset, maybe a game. The free trial scratch ticket will say it expired a while ago, but in reality you can still use it.

I forget exactly how it setup with the Xbox1. I think you just boot up the system without a disc in, and from there are options which take you to a Live account setup.

Well that was all shockingly easy, one phone call, one trip to the cable company and a stop at Best Buy and I had Live going in no time at all.

Moments later I was informed that I was a fag fucker - that I eat my grandmas douche - and repeatedly asked by one young gentleman "why do you keep rubbing your nuts!" Apparently Live has a video option.

It was great when that was coming through the surround before I figured out how to change it to headset only.

What's with so many consecutive Xbox-related former-"recent scuffles"? This one, at least, has reminded me that I should try and go online more as my Live account has been paid for yet inactive for months now.

Oh, and otis:

Welcome to the Future of Gaming, fag fucker!

I've been LIVE capable for the past few months. Still not sold on all the trash talking (I have a few friends on it and they say it happens constantly) then of course there is the learning curve. Playing by yourself always lends to a certain degree of superiority. Getting your ass handed to you by someone 12 yr old punk isn't exactly appetizing. Still I suppose I should give it a whirl sometime. Give me your thoughts on it after a few weeks Otis.

Will do. I've been having a blast so far, spending way more time playing than I thought I would. All I've been doing is playing the unranked "practice" games. The racist/bigoted nastiness of many of the players I could do without though.
