Just so there is no misunderstanding, I didn't actually watch the Grammys.

Alicia Keys and Bonnie Raitt did a song in James' honor, and LL and ?uestlove called out Don Cornelius. The latter made me snicker a bit, considering this.

For a second, I read that as David Patrick Kelly, and was gonna have to call in a personal holiday from work.

Funny.  I first read it as David E. Kelley and immediately thought, "So, Michelle Pfeiffer's free?"

Ah, fuck... Mr. O'Reilly gone!!

I was halfway through an elated "fist pump" myself before realizing it was somebody else.

Personally, I first read it as David C. Kelly, associate professor of mathematics at Hampshire College in Amherst, Massachusetts.

Renowned comic artist John Severin passes away at 90.

I remember seeing a bunch of his stuff in reprints of old Mad magazines, definitely a great talent.  90 is a helluva run though.

And he was still going strong just recently, on Garth Ennis' Punisher MAX:

Oh my GOD that would have sucked.

Insult to Injury Dept: Now I find that Houston's death caused the Grammy telecast to bump a tribute to Clarence Clemons from Maceo Parker.

48 is very old for a drug addict.

Hall of Fame catcher Gary Carter, dead of brain cancer at 57.

Loved this guy back when I really followed baseball and was a rabid Mets fan.  Died less than a year after being diagnosed.  Man, fuck cancer.

Michael Davis, bassist for the MC5, passed away.

http://music-mix.ew.com/2012/02/19/michael-davis-dies/

He died too young but at least he made it for two decades longer than Rob Tyner and Sonic Smith.  I guess whoever is running the afterlife really wants to rock the fuck out as 3/5 of one of the greatest bands ever has shuffled off.

The Grammys didn't mention Mike Starr or Jani Lane. While I'm not a fan of Alice In Chains, somebody who played on a platinum album should get recognition. I like the first two Warrant albums, sue me.

"Dr. Sir Chaz Chazzington? A complaint from the galaxy has been filed against you. Warrant is terrible."

And then I tear it up for I am rebelling against the galaxy!

There were many bands worse than Warrant. I wasn't a fan of theirs or anything, but their guitarists were actually pretty talented compared to many other bands from that era.

True. They rank higher than Winger and White Lion.

Winger had Rod Morgenstein on drums. White Lion had Vito Bratta on guitar. That's some genuine talent there.

Is this the part where I confess that I really like Kix, Bullet Boys, & Britny Fox?

To bring the thread somewhat back on track, on facebook I've seen a lot of postings about how soldiers dying is more important than Whitney Houston and other celebrities. While I agree, its weird to see this from people I know are right leaning. I'm more angry about Iraq, a war based on lies, Bush smearing the records on vets he ran against, and Bush and McCain being against a new GI bill. That bothers me a lot more than yellow journalism.

I'm pretty well read for a dude who still listens to hair metal.

Bang Tango, baby.

Kip Winger played bass on Alice Cooper's The Nightmare Returns tour. That gives him street cred.

I'm waiting for Judas to defend Nelson.

Even I hate Nelson.

We gotta be careful where we take this derail. We may just end up accidentally forming a Sigue Sigue Sputnik fanclub.

At least Sigue Sigue Sputnik is interesting*.

*I said interesting, not good.

None of these bands are any good.

Stop it before I hurt you all.

The story behind the band is somewhat interesting, but the band itself is completely boring.

Yeah, that's what I was getting at; you would think with all of the people involved that they would have accidentally made some good music.

In the case of Jani Lane, I guess they didn't want to go where the down boys go. Yes, besides my piss-poor attempt at humor, I am showing my age.

You think you're old, I'm still trying to pull off "way cool junior" as a hip expression.

You know what? Somebody Knightriders DIED! That's FAR more important than hair-metal!

Is true that you hung out with the blues crowd and that is how you got that crazy sound?

Daniel von Bargen has (so far) survived a suicide attempt:

Poor guy. That's pretty sad but maybe he thought it'd be better to go out quickly rather than die slowly of skin cancer.
