One of the members of Kriss Kross is gone at only 34. Not sure if he was "Mac Daddy" or "Daddy Mac", but his birth name was Chris Kelly.

Maybe Diva would know.

Deanna Durbin, the other (and arguably better) great singing teen star of the 40s. She was 91.

Update: Chris Kelly was "Mack Daddy".

Restless nights sleep averted.

Speaking of 90s one-hit wonders, Chrissy Amphlett from the band Divinyls passed away last week at age 53 after a long battle with cancer & MS. Awful.

Oooohhhh, Art, you just made an enemy of 23 million Aussies with that "one hit wonder" label.......

The Divinyls are a multi-generational institution down here!

Jeff Hanneman is gone.

Edit: Me too.

Hanneman wrote the music for most of the band's fan favorites, songs such as "South of Heaven", "War Ensemble", "Raining Blood", "Angel of Death", "Mandatory Suicide", and "Seasons in the Abyss",

I mean, in terms of genre impact, that's like a Beatle biting the dust.

He wrote most of the music on Reign In Blood. That's like the Sistine Chapel of thrash!

Gutted. It was common knowledge that Hanneman hadn't been in the best of health recently (He didn't even come over for Slayer's recent Soundwave tour here) but who saw this coming? RIP Jeff. I'll be throwing on the Big 4 blu over the weekend in your honour.

At least we still got all the guitar players from Metallica, Megadeth, and Anthrax around, eh?

So I am hearing the legendary Ray Harryhausen has passed away.

That is a big one :(

On a cool, logical level, this is one of those losses where we're talking about a man whose last true piece of work came 32 years ago.  So it's not like we're being deprived of some possible future greatness.  But on a symbolic, emotional level, this is seismic.  He was the spiritual grandfather of so many of the techniques used today.  He was the inspiration for at least two generations of effects artists.  And his films were the best reasons Saturday afternoon television programming existed.

There's more magic in the dragon from 7TH VOYAGE OF SINBAD than in most CGI created monsters from the last 20 years. And I say that as someone who likes a lot of CGI effects.

(Note that I'm not disagreeing with Richard. Not in the least. Just sharing my own nostalgic, sentimental POV.)

I love JatA and the skeleton fight is awesome but I always liked the Talos scene more.

My favorite Harryhausen film was always THE GOLDEN VOYAGE OF SINBAD.  The work here was phenomenal, especially in this scene:

I'm Team GOLDEN VOYAGE, also.  The Centaur might be HH's crowning achievement.  So good.

Reading over his filmography I realize that I have never seen ONE MILLION YEARS B.C.   Worth it?

I think his crowning achievement is Pegasus from the original CLASH OF THE TITANS.  The scene where Perseus captures him and tames him is pure magic.  GOLDEN VOYAGE is his most consistent effort in terms of quality and WOW factor, in my opinion.

I hope he was welcomed with a parade as he rode through the gates of Hell, and dutifully took his new role as slayer of hippies in the underworld.

Damn, Harryhausen is a gut punch; my favorite effect of his is one of his smaller scales ones, the skeletons in "Jason..".

The Medusa sequence from Clash of the Titans. Love it to bits.

Truly sad news.  He was a pioneer and his work really helped my imagination run rampant as a child.  He may have passed, but his legacy will last forever.  What a loss. Damn.

I was able to meet Mr. Harryhausen at SDCC back in 2001.  It was very brief as I was SO NERVOUS.  He was sitting in this big, round booth.  You couldn't see inside it unless you stopped and looked; which I did and saw him.  People walking by not realizing a living legend was among them.  Granted, Stan Winston was there, too.  I walked past the booth several times before I mustered the courage to go in and shake the hand of the man who made the movies magical for me. I also shook Stan Winston's hand (and won a raffle of one of his action figures).

That SDCC will always hold a special place for me, due to this very reason.  RIP, Ray Harryhausen.  There are no words sufficient enough to describe what you did for me, how you inspired me.  You're a big reason why I always dreamed of being an artist and have always loved the movies.

The original Clash Of The Titans was apparently a childhood favorite of mine (my mother claims I would watch it almost every week) and so this is terrible news. I hope that Harryhausen is in Heaven, surrounded by all of his stop-motion creations so that he never gets lonely. Rest in peace, Mr H. You were a hero of mine.

NOOOOO! RIP Ray Harryhausen. One of the (many) reasons I fell in love with film in my younger years. The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms bedtime film for me tonight!

I want to dream of skeletons.

We are all Skeletons on the inside.

And if anyone hasn't yet, pick up the Art of Ray Harryhausen. It is such a gorgeous book.

Now I feel stupid for selling my Harryhausen Blu-ray set back when I got panicky about raising money.

I got to go to a Harryhausen Q&A a few years ago, which was amazing. A lovely guy, still sharp as a tack and has an endless string of stories, and best of all he brought some of the original maquettes with him, which we could come down and look at up close at the end - Talos, Medusa, the Centaur, all the classics. I remember staring at one of the skeletons from JatA and feeling like I was staring my own childhood in the face, in a good way. I'm pretty sure that the concept of wonder I grew up with has Harryhausen's animation hard-coded into it.

Not to diminish the Master, but most of the Pegasus scenes were animated by Jim Danforth. I think Titans was the only production where Harryhausen employed assistant animators.

For me, the hidden jewel is Valley of Gwangi, which was a tribute to his own mentor, Willis O'Brien. Cowboys and dinosaurs, great music score too.

Mario Machado, newscaster and Casey Wong from the ROBOCOP films, aged 78.

Good luck Frank!

Dick Trickle, dead at 71, apparently from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.  Such a selfish act, Dick.  The jokes would have been even better if you'd done it a couple years earlier.

Ray Manzarek, keyboardist for The Doors.

Aww, man.

Aw, that fucking sucks.

Shit. Another legend bites the dust.
