Molt, you didn't like MR. MAJESTYK? (you're killing me!)

Random thoughts on HICKEY & BOGGS:

Very definition of a cult film.

Not really action. More 70's neo-noir.

48 Hrs. comparison unfair. ( tho template is there) Not much humour (to it's detriment perhaps)

Robert Culp is the weak link. Both with his workman-like direction and charisma free performance.

He & Cos are supposed to be screw up, slightly degenerate losers. This angle shouldve been played up more.

"Hey, it's that guy!" moment---James Woods shows up as ball-busting Lt. Also: Ed Lauter and Michael Moriarty.

The thing I loved the best: the guys couldn't shoot straight! plenty of shoot-outs early on & they never hit anybody!!

Conclusion: worth seeing if you can find it. But not worth dropping big bucks.
Bummer. Guess it's one of those deals where the thought of Culp and Cosby shedding their I-Spy persona is better than the execution.

MAJESTYK is just a real hokey flick. Maybe it's because I'm not a big fan of watermelon and thus can't really sympathize with Bronson's plight concerning his melon crop.

Speaking of 70's Bronson, one of his flicks from that decade that I've so far missed is BREAKOUT. I'm curious because it's Bronson and Robert Duval which seems like a cool pairing.

Plus not too long ago I stumbled across this bitchin' scene:

http://youtube.com/watch?v=w2ZAbr7EAXg

Anybody seen BREAKOUT?

Only once. I was just warming up to Bronson at the time. If I recall, liked it.

Funny you mention it because I picked it up for three bucks at Big Lots. Hope to get around to it again soon.

The next two movies I will see via Netflix are:

The Hidden and
KINJITE FORBIDDEN SUBJECTS! I vowed to see Kinjite after this scene with Bronson confronting this guy who keeps on yelling FUCKER!!! COME ON FUCKER!!! FUCKHEAD!!!!
http://youtube.com/watch?v=ingQw7X8444
THE HIDDEN is about as good as it gets when it comes to sci-fi action.

Wonder if BREAKOUT is available at the Big Lots near me? I haven't been in there in a long time. I think I bought some coasters. They looked really nice but they've sort of fallen apart since I got 'em. Granted, they were dirt cheap but I did think they'd be more durable. There's a Linens 'N Things near me that's going out of business. Perhaps I can get a cherry deal on some new coasters there.

For the record, My fave Bronson vehicles:

HARD TIMES

MR. MAJESTYK

DEATH HUNT

THE MECHANIC

ST. IVES

TELEFON

Confession: I'm not sure if seen any of the Death Wish flicks. Shame on me!

Re: Big Lots

Sometimes you can find an cool or out of print title for cheap. Only reason I ever venture in.

Watching 48 HRS. again. God, I love this movie!

Somebody needs to make a you-tube mix of all the classic Nolte line readings.

My favorite, during the motel shootout, screams at the receptionist-

"CALL FOR HELP NOWWW!!!!!"

Cracks me up everytime.

Yeah, I'm stunned you haven't at least seen the first one. Though to be honest I find it to be a fairly mundane film. Can't believe it sometimes gets mentioned as being in the same class as DIRTY HARRY. No way.

2 is just depressing and off-putting. 3 and 4 are wild fun but you don't strike me as real big on the over-the-top 80's action flicks so I don't think you'd enjoy those 2 as much as others do in this thread.

Still never seen 5.

I've really had to come around on Bronson. Only a recent convert. Grew up with a lot of assholes who loved the DEATH WISH stuff. Made me predisposed to be antagonistic to him & the series, I suspect.

At this point, I'm kind of looking forward to checking them out--at least the first couple.

(even if they are sleazy Dirty Harry rip-offs, I'm sure they have their charms)

I'd say skip MR. MAJESTYK. Not unless you're really interested in seeing Bronson avenge his watermelon crop.

"I gotta get these melons in."

I really like Mr. Majestyk. Great score, and Al Lettieri sleazing it up. Great action in it too.

You're not the only one, Jim. Although I give the slight edge to Hard Target because it starts with Uncle Douvee saying "This real catastrophe, this real bad!"

On the Arnold talk, I really like End Of Days a lot, and think that one and T3 are his last really good flicks, with 6th Day being a decent flick. I like Molt, tend to find some little nugget of hope in most of Arnold's post Eraser flicks. Shit, I really like Batman & Robin a lot because that flick is just plain hilarious.

Total Recall has a ton of my most favorite lines ever, and is far and away my favorite Arnold flick. One notable quote one being

"Hurrrhahahaha, you think this is the real Quaid?"

*Guards look behind themselves*

"It is!"

and of course

"I wanted Hauser back, but nooooooooo you had to be Quaid!"

The Running Man is another that I enjoy a lot too. I remember the first time I saw it, my folks taped it as the sunday ABC evening movie back in '91. Commando was another one. Man, both of these flicks were butchered bad, but damn if I still didn't enjoy them.
If Death Race doesn't interest you, how about Death Racers starring the Insane Clown Posse. http://youtube.com/watch?v=AOXUfbdq1JM

It'll also be out on the same week.
Just finished 48 HRS.

The perfect blend of action and humour.

Noticed last time a lot of homages to this flick in TRUE ROMANCE. (Think Slater drives the same caddy..backs away in the same reckless, hell-bent fashion)

The fist-fight between Murphy & Nolte is a favorite. As is the dialogue. ("Let me explain something to you nigger: I FIGHT DIRTY!!!!")

The redneck bar scene is classic. Takes the piss out of both THE FRENCH CONNECTION & URBAN COWBOY. (flipping them on their head) Right there, before your eyes you see Murphy become a movie star.

It can't be said enough how important and revolutionary this performance was. ("You know what I am? I'm your worst fuckin' nightmare, man. A nigger with a badge....which means I have permission to kick your fuckin' ass whenever I feel like it!")

Nolte's Jack Cates is the most likable racist asshole in screen history. ("Fuckin' bastard." "That I am.") A testament to Nolte that we're still on his side in the end, rooting for him (despite his otherwise reprehensible flaws). He's a blast to watch.

The way Walter Hill shot that final confrontation is masterful. (The emergence thru smoke & fog of a focused, mean vengeful anti-hero. Awesome!)

James Remarr? As cool an 80's villain as you'll get.

Damn. Again, what a great movie!
The music of 48 Hrs is so jazzy and takes you into the world of Jack Cates. Plus if you listen carefully you will notice the same theme music sleaze its way into COMMANDO and then later CLEAR AND PRESENT DANGER.

BRUNO UPDATE

I was digging around Bruce's IMDB page, and the synopses for his upcoming slate sounded pretty funny:

MORGAN'S SUMMIT
A late night radio host (Willis) who promotes the power of kindness changes his ways after a brutal crime affects his life and his thoughts turn to vengeance.

THE SURROGATES
Set in a futuristic world where humans live in isolation and interact through surrogate robots, a cop (Willis) is forced to leave his home for the first time in years in order to investigate the murders of others’ surrogates.

Just a question. How many of you here have seen Virtuosity?
Its a 90's Sci-fi flick starring Denzel Washington and a pre-Gladiator Russell Crow. Denzel plays an ex-cop who is tasked in recapturing Sid (Crow), a homicidal AI program who has downloaded himself into a nanobot body in the real world.

It's been over 10 yrs since I last saw this, so I was just wondering.
Is it worth a second look?

RED HEAT has a similar score too. James Horner really liked those steel drums.

As for VIRTUOSITY, I had fun with it when it came out, but I don't know how well it holds up now. I'll have to give it another watch. The one thing I do remember is a set piece in a UFC arena, which obviously predated the current mixed-martial arts craze by quite a few years.

It's so perfect in 48!

Damn you James Horner for being such an unoriginal twat!

Hans, the call is out for a Jack Cates mega-mix!

It has some serious cheese, but more importantly it has William Forsythe (though his role sucks).

In my ever so humble, it sucked. Shame to see pairing wasted. (Though, I recall Crowe giving it a go and hamming it up)

((It's directed by the talent behind LAWNMOWER MAN. That should tell ya all you need to know

Guess they finally got it right in AMERICAN GANGSTER.

I own Virtuosity and have been a fan of it since it originally came out. THe scene in the prison where the guy yells "WHO WANTS DARK MEAT???" is the modern era equivalent of "It's HOT DOG TIME!"

I wonder if the 'vengeance' mentioned in the synopsis for Bruno's MORGAN'S SUMMIT is bone-breaking, face-smashing vengeance or more of the moving-hydrants and having pizzas delivered to their door that they didn't order type of vengeance.

Oh hang on, it's from the director of 8 HEADS IN A DUFFEL BAG and WELCOME TO MOOSEPORT.

Abandon all hope!

I swear he kills in that movie. All about the line delivery. He makes even the mundane dialogue some kind of monster. Hits every note.

I'd smoke a carton of cigs a day and almost drown in whiskey to get my voice to have that Cates' quality. Be worth it. Probably pull an Annette O'Toole.

My favorite Cates line in 48 hrs is

"yehhhhhh

YEHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH...."

In Another 48 it's

"....HO!!"

I was super pumped when Virtuousity came out as I saw it in the theater. Meh, very mediocre. I would recommend skipping it and instead renting or buying Ricochet if you want a good Denzel action-like film. Very underrated film.
What about THE MIGHTY QUINN? It looks like a promising early Denzel action-thriller. Anybody see that one?
I was way too young at the time it was on, and didn't obtain any knowledge of it during my formative years, so it knocked me sideways when I saw Denzel in the opening credits of ST ELSEWHERE.

Love Denzel, unfortunately I haven't seen INSIDE MAN or AMERICAN GANGSTER yet (don't worry, I'm on it!)
Never caught MIGHTY QUINN. I saw HEART CONDITION though! Boy, was Bob Hoskins racist.

RICOCHET is indeed Denzel's best action film. He sleepwalks through VIRTUOSITY. Plus, as much as I dig Crowe in VIRTUOSITY he isn't as diabolically sinister as Lithgow in RICOCHET.
THE CHIEF OF POLICE AND THE CHIEF SUSPECT. They know each other too well to let a little thing like murder get in their way.

Oh wow, checked out director of MIGHTY QUINN and one of his earlier efforts is Graf Dracula beißt jetzt in Oberbayern aka DRACULA BLOWS HIS COOL. What an amazing title.
Ricochet had the "death by Skilsaw" for that poor parole board member. That shocked the hell out of me actually, the first time I saw it.

True, John Lithgow rules. What happened to him? He got that cushy sitcom gig, and that's the last I saw of him. Well, apart from lending his voice to the Shrek-franchise.

One of my favorite movie-psychos. Where is he now? He should be threatning a schoolbus full of kids, Scorpio-style, right now!
That whole parole scene is epic work from Lithgow. He is out of his goddamn mind in that flick. Love when he kills Kevin Pollak and then tosses Denzel the gun.

I don't begrudge Lithgow his sitcom success. He deserved it. But I do miss him as a psychopath. He had a real nice stretch in the early 90's with RICOCHET, RAISING CAIN, and CLIFFHANGER. CAIN has some huge flaws but Lithgow is a hoot in it.
Yeah, VIRTUOSITY is not good despite Crowe hamming it up in it. If I'm going to watch a bad Denzel Washington movie I usually go with either RICOCHET which is really quite bad or OUT OF TIME (which while not an action movie, I strangely can watch over and over).

ETA: I always think of Lithgow from HARRY & THE HENDERSONS more than his actual good work. It's unfortunate.

I'd say it's the general over-acting and ridiculousness of Lithgow that makes it non-top shelf. I've lost count of the times I haven't been able to watch more than the first half of that movie.

On a subconscious I think it also hurts it that I watched it first in crappy WGN Saturday Afternoon Movie format and then followed it up by watching it a couple times on On Demand cable in 'really bad transfer' mode.

I love Raw Deal! What are you guys smoking!? Arnie waving his dick around, being cocky everywhere! It's awesome! You got a 70's-style chase at the beginning of the flick, an awesome alley-fight and a shootout to "I Can't Get No Satisfaction".

And Sven Thorsen's in it!

No, they resolve it in dialogue at the end of the flick. Arnie says that his "reunion" with his wife was "a great success" and that they're gonna have a baby.

...I don't care for that ending... kinda wish it would've ended at the airport... but it's so ridiculous (what with the nurse tearing up and all) that it adds its own level of hilarity to the movie.

Plus, any flick where Schwarzenegger slays 30 people has gotta be good. It's just gotta. I mean, he dumps a bowl of candy on the end guy after shooting him multiple times in the back (at close range) with a shotgun! Sweet!
I have no problem with over-acting as long as it's done well. Lithgow does it well. He takes such joy in being a murderous maniac. There was no need for him to play it subtle in that flick. He socks you in the jaw with his performance and I thank him for doing so.

Yeah, the dumping of the candy is great. Talk about adding insult to injury. I'd hate to get shot and then have some dude pour Skittles all over my bleeding corpse.

But again, that's part of the last 20 minutes. Just wish the rest of RAW DEAL could have provided more candy-related smackdowns.
