1. Of course have Michael Kamen's music
2. be called "DO OR DIE HARD"
3. be directed and written by me so there will not be a repeat of LFODH
post #16152 of 95593
I've said it before, I'd only be interested in DH5 if they unshackle McTiernan and get him to direct. Otherwise I'll pass, Jughead!
Would McTiernan still have the skillz?

I'd like to imagine that some 'McClane Instinct' would kick in when he's back on the set of a DIE HARD film, making it impossible for him to fuck up, but looking at his output since '99 I wonder.

A.V. Club has a report on Roadhouse. You're telling me this film had dialogue such as this:

"Calling me 'sir' is like putting an elevator in an outhouse. Don't belong."

"I heard you had balls big enough to cum in a dump truck, but you don't look like much to me."

"Does a hobby horse have a wooden dick?"

"That gal has got entirely too many brains to have an ass like that."

"I see you found my trophy room, Dalton. The only thing missing is your ass."

But no mention of the great "I used fuck guys like you in prison". Anyway here's the report:

You haven't seen it?

A 'B'-action classic if ever there was one.

Though to my continued shock and dismay, don't believe Molt is a fan.

(Better hope & pray he never meets Sam Elliott in a dark alley)
Yeah, ROADHOUSE is a film that I'm shocked Molti has no love for. Maybe it has something to do with a lack of any real action? Who knows.
I hate to be a statistics nerd, but Live free actually performed the 2nd worst out of the die hard flicks, if you adjust for inflation, which you have to in order to accurately guage a franchise' popularity.

http://www.the-numbers.com/movies/records/inflation.php

'Die Harder' comes top, at $191 million. Pretty good!

N.B. - At todays prices, Eraser made $151 million! Good call, America.
the next action flick that look like it could be good is "Taken" Starring: Liam Neeson

These two movies toward the bottom of that list really surprised me:

569. 1987 Predator $105,110,122
570. 1993 Rising Sun $104,853,980

I can't believe that PREDATOR didn't make any more than this (remember it's adjusted for inflation). I guess it really gained a following on home video. As for RISING SUN, it definitely didn't deserve to make that much. I guess two popular stars led to decent coin back in 1993.

Don't know why you'd wanna watch the 4th CROW, but ROADHOUSE is a completely different animal.

If that AV Club article didn't sell you on it, I don't know what will (doubt I can). It just works. Brilliant cheese. In quality, somewhere between RED DAWN & POINT BREAK--somehow it elevates itself above the usual action gutter garbage.

(The funny thing is you go in expecting to make fun of it--but it totally takes you in)

Swayze is basicly Wyatt Earp as bouncer (or "cooler"). That should tell you all ya need to know!

I still disagree with this statement. Joe Hallenbeck never quite felt like John McClane to me. They both were wise-asses but one would blow up on the quick while the other didn't even show emotion when he caught his wife fucking his best friend. "Boy Scout" is more Willis doing a Lethal Weapon flick with Shane Black and Tony Scott than an unofficial Die Hard movie.

Nail on head.

Has anyone ever seen SUNSET? The one he did with James Garner? I think it's the only Bruno movie I've yet to check out.

Worth the effort?

(The premise sounds cool)
Hallenbeck was a man truly fucked over. McClane was just a guy in an unlucky situation.

And as for Roadhouse I'll give it a shot sometime soon.

Being a huge Garner fan, I've seen it a couple times. It's not really much of an action movie by any stretch of the imagination. But if you're looking for a kind of small, old-school feeling flick with a young Bruce Willis and a sage James Garner it's fun enough to watch. Just don't go in expecting anything more than mild comedy/thriller with a little action.

The biggest issue is it combines the two things I don't really enjoy, movies about actors/directors and period movies set between 1900-1930.

PERFECT STRANGER was a couple months before LIVE FREE so I don't think that counts against him. His next big starring role is in THE SURROGATES. That'll be the one to watch to see if he still has clout.

I knew someone would play the "inflation" card. Bottom line, LIVE FREE was a big hit and I'm sure FOX still views it as a viable franchise.

And yes, ROADHOUSE is grossly overrated.
How is Roadhouse overrated? In terms of what exactly? I mean no one is thinking this is top notch cinema.
Roadhouse is definitely worth seeing at least once, I just don't know that I'd feel any need to own it. There is a RiffTrax available for it that is pretty entertaining though.

Roadhouse is great. I watched it again recently and forgot how classic it really is. So, so much fun and a perfect picture of what made the 80s so fantastic.
I'm a fan of Road House myself, but I can understand if people don't care for all the Internet hype it has gotten over the years. I also agree it's worth at least one view, due to how goofy and implausible (and yet entertaining) it is.

Speaking of Ellis, here's a YouTube clip of his final minutes before he meets his demise.

And speaking of Die Hard...

If you ever wanted to see what it would have been like if it was made in the 1920's, here you go.
I'm totally up for a 5th Die Hard flick. It could be called Die Hard: White Knight. We've got Ellis' brother out for revenge against McClane.

Seriously, I'd be up for a 5th Die Hard flick. I enjoyed LFODH, so seeing McClane again would be great.

Thanks for posting the Hell Ride trailer Molt. That Comingsoon one never loaded for me. It seems cool enough, so I'll see it when it comes out, if it comes out near me. If not, dvd it is for me.

Max Payne looks pretty faithful to the game, but I'm leery of it coming out like Hitman, so I'll reserve my thoughts until I see the flick.

Roadhouse is a flick I still have not seen yet, so I'll have to give that one a rent as well.
ROADHOUSE is overrated because Swayze is a lame hero. The movie should have focused on Sam Elliott and made Swayze the young upstart who gets killed off. I've just never been fond off him as a lead. ROADHOUSE, NEXT OF KIN, BLACK DOG. Just does nothing for me. He was a solid villain in POINT BREAK and nice part of an ensemble in UNCOMMON VALOR but he just doesn't have "it" when it comes to carrying a film.

Glad he's still alive though.

YOU JUST CANT HANDLE HIS ZEN PHILOSOPHY

OR HIS MULLETT

OR JUST THE WAY HE SAYS PAIN DONT HURT!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I can almost take you not liking ROADHOUSE---but BLACK DOG too!!????

Don't get too many truck drivin' action flicks, man!
I've always dug Swayze, mostly for Point Break, but I liked his roles in Uncommon Valor, and Red Dawn. His role in Donnie Darko was a stereotype breaker for sure.
I mean for fuck's sake, ROADHOUSE has the line, "I used to fuck guys like you in prison."

How can you not love that?

Roadhouse will always have a place in my heart, even if it is a raging piece of shit. Or because it's a raging piece of shit.

"A polar bear fell on me" - Fat guy in everything. Dennis Burkley I believe.

That Hell Ride trailer is tops, it had me sold as soon as Madsen pulls out a gun and shoots those dudes in the beginning. Is that Eric Balfour? That dude's face bothers me. I don't mean to be insensitive, but to me he looks like the kid from Mask.
That's a good line. Didn't say the film was horrible. Just think it has unjustly joined the mainstream while vastly better films like SHOWDOWN IN LITTLE TOKYO, STONE COLD, and ACTION JACKSON are still just cult favorites among nuts like us.
Yeah but once again overated in terms of what exactly? In that people think it's a great action movie? It being hilarious? A shitty film? What?

And yes that is Eric Balfour in Hell Ride. He wasn't too bad in Conviction though. Man has more cancelled tv shows than I can imagine.

I see. I guess I expected you to be doing back-flips in Church like Belushi in THE BLUES BROTHERS.

Think we can all agree NEXT OF KIN sucks hard.

Agreed. It basically fails as an action movie, it can't decide if it wants to be a nice barroom brawl movie or a hardcore action movie.

Oh, and here's my monthly fuck you to Action Jackson. Thank god we don't have the rep system any more.

Wow! Respect your opinion, Keith (a fellow WANDERERS fan), but that's a little shocking.

Only seen once but remember it being a drag; waste of surprisingly great cast & solid premise.
Oh, it's not great, but it has to offer: Swayze, Paxton, Adam Baldwin, and Helen Hunt getting some shit splashed in her face. Who hasn't wanted to do that at one time or another?

Hmmm. I think another chance may be in order.

Sooo....can we all agree STEEL DAWN sucked?
It's not literal shit splashed in her face, that would have made it too awesome. I haven't seen STEEL DAWN for twenty years, but I'm going out on a limb and agreeing with you.

I think if he and Ted McGinly were on the same show the universe would implode.
I remember just seeing a piece of Steel Dawn years ago on TBS or TNT, can't remember which, but it didn't seem that good. It was Sawyze on some little rocket sled or something that he was trying to drive.

Feel like I explained myself when stating that I didn't care for Swayze in the film. Guess you need more. Alright.

It's not a movie designed to be viewed as a good action film. Pretty much everyone who likes it only enjoys it in a "Man, this sure is a goofy movie" sort of way. It's not exciting at all. If people want to enjoy it for that then that's fine. Lord knows I only like STREET FIGHTER because it's hilarious and not because of its fight scenes. I just don't end up doubled-over in the same way while watching ROADHOUSE.
I was pretty impressed with the MAX PAYNE trailer, that was Wahlberg growling his lines at the beginning right? Wonder if some will find that voice laughable.

I hope THE HAPPENING hasn't ruined him in some people's eyes, I'm a big fan of Marky Mark.

I get where you're coming from.

I just think it works; transcends "goofy" into, if not a traditionally "good" movie, a kind of brilliant amalgam of the western/ modern action genre (particularly the 80's). It's kickass..in the best sense of the word.

Swayze sells the show with every ounce of his being. It's a silly role. Best "cooler" in the world ?(or whatever)-- but you can't help buying into it (at least a little bit)
Mark Wahlberg is the epitome of an actor that sorely needs a good director. I thought his work in THE DEPARTED was a revelation, then I realized he's being directed by Scorsese and playing a dickhead from Boston. Not much of a stretch.

I'll wait and see. I'll probably check this one out being a fan of the game, but I'm not expecting something special.
Wahlberg should use his GOLLY GEE nerd voice from the Happening in all of his films.

Come on buddy!
Take an interest in science!!
I'm sure I'd like it more with a more convincing lead. At that point Swayze seemed like someone who should be working at "Chippendales," which may explain why he was perfect opposite Chris Farley in that classic sketch.

I'm still cool with Wahlberg. Though I didn't waste the time to go see THE HAPPENING. But he still has cred with me thanks to THE DEPARTED and SHOOTER.
Gotta love that GOLLY GEE nerd voice. Hell I liked THE HAPPENING (but nowhere near enough to try and defend it in the post-release thread), but that school scene was full of LOL.

I saw that movie sitting next to a very vocal Scouser who couldn't abide Deschanel. Not I, I'd happily let her experience another happening... IN MY PANTS. Am I right, fellas?

Regretfully, I have not seen ROADHOUSE either.
There just seems to be no middle ground with Wahlberg. It's either really good or holy shit, that dude needs to get the Funky Bunch back together, because this acting thing is just not him.

I did like Shooter, though.

I'm not going to brave The Happening. Even the people I know who like anything are angry about that one.
God I totally forgot about SHOOTER. I gotta check that out, see how Wahlberg is as an action lead.

Remember catching BASKETBALL DIARIES back in the day, and being floored that that was him. (Marky Mark can act?)

Over a decade later, feel no shame in listing him as one of my favorites. Didn't care for SHOOTER or FOUR BROTHERS but he was easily the best part of both, (not quite an action star yet, but possessing a convincing physicality)
Thought he was great in SHOOTER. That and THE CORRUPTOR are his best action films. Did great work in THREE KINGS which I tend to view more as a satire than an action film, though there are some wicked sequences in that flick.

Also loved him in FEAR. Best ever teeny-bobber FATAL ATTRACTION ripoff.

The thing about SHOOTER is that Danny Glover's constant lisping, or whatever it is he does, really sticks out. I don't know if I'd blame the sound mixer or Glover getting older or what but I kept wondering if something were wrong with my speakers every time he talked.
