Maximum Risk was Ringo Lam's US debut, it's a shame his career tanked (He was known for being difficult), it was a decent effort from Van Damme even if he used the old 'I have a twin brother I didn't know about' plot. Lam made two more films with VD, In Hell and The Replicant, both are worth watching.

I just saw... BUNRAKU.

There is SO MUCH RIDICULOUS is this movie. Josh Hartnett as a lone gun who teams up with samurai GACKT in a WORLD WITHOUT GUNS. That's right, there was so much war that guns were destroyed and banned, and everyone uses swords now.

All the sets appear to be intentionally fakey (maybe made of paper?) and there's lots of silly long-take action sequences, though guys like Hartnett (and Kevin McKidd, who kills a lot of dudes) seem pretty uncomfortable with it. In the end they have to face this dreadlocked warlord played by Ron Perlman, and there's a lot of faux-philosophical chatter about warriors and such. Lots of action, like a Sin City with more fighting, but most of the two hours is spent with wink-wink genre dialogue, most of it courtesy of a bartender played by Woody Harrelson, who just seems... drunk?

I would have really liked it if it were not two hours long. Curious to see what others think.

man I remember when I was so jazzed abotu Ringo Lam following in Woo's footsteps by coming to America.

Looking at his IMDB he hasn't done anything since 2007.  I wonder what he is up to?

Although Maximum Risk didn't set the world on fire, it's a well-made film. It was an attempt to do a "serious" Van Damme thriller with a European flavor. It was unsuccesful but mostly because this is when JCVD was squarely on his downward spiral.

Ringo Lam certainly acquitted himself with future Van Damme collaborations. I really like Replicant and In Hell is a bit dreary but has nice texture. Both benefit from Van Damme making a real effort to be taken seriously as an actor.

Self-Caricature double signed: "Crenna/by/Crenna/(badly)/'80", 5¾x9. Richard Crenna (1927-2003) starred in two early TV sitcoms, Our Miss Brooks (1952-1956) and The Real McCoys (1957-1963). A frequent TV guest star and guest director, he was most recently a recurring guest star on Judging Amy (2000-2002). His most highly regarded film performances include The Sand Pebbles (1966), Body Heat (1981) and The Flamingo Kid (1985). Slightly creased. Fine condition.

Not one mention of Rambo???

I won't defend Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark as a great movie, but it's not bad.  And it's MILES better than the original.  A superior remake in every way.

And damn, Hannah looks great there.  She's still got it.

That VHS must be a mint copy of a couple of episodes of RAMBO AND THE FORCES OF FREEDOM (or whatever that cartoon was called)... DUBBED IN SPANISH.

In other words, buy it immediately.

The Spanish text reads: "The most passionate videos from the series"* ... "Collect them!" and there is mention of "The Boys For Peace" Which is either the Spanish title of "Forces of Freedom" or some Chilean charity that you will support with your purchase.

*I'm being a dick and transliterating. In Spanish, the word for "passionate" can also mean thrilling or exciting.

How much does that Brazilian Trautman with Limited Edition TELEMUNDO VHS go for?

I really liked Replicant when I watched it earlier this year.  In Hell is what I have coming in next from Netflix.

I thought the trailer looked interesting and it has a neat cast.  I think the whole thing is meant to be some origami-esque city, but don't quote me on that.

Really glad to see Maximum Risk getting love. I never saw it until I blind bought the dvd at a pawn shop back in 2008, and was floored by how awesome the action was. The elevator fight is the standout. Definitely Bourne-level fights.

wait who is it supposed to be again?

Let's just say he brought a lot of PAYNE to us.

I'm far more worried about the script than the director.  Len Wiseman was the least of Live Free or Die Hard's problems.  Also, I'm betting for Summer 2013.  Fox isn't going to toss this puppy to the wolves in Winter 2012.

That's assuming that it gets off the ground with John Moore directing.  This project has lost two directors already over the years.

I'll be the one to say that I liked Max Payne. It didn't reinvent the wheel, or the salad shooter, but I dug it. Plus it's going to be McClane in Russia. How am I not seeing this?

I've gotten pretty excited over Contagion. Also looking forward to Apollo 18.

Went to The Olive Garden today with Vanessa and her Mother. We all had the never ending pasta bowl. I didn't even suggest the place. I told her that we had been talking about it on here. Of course I brought some back home.

During the meal I checked on an item I'd been bidding on. I won it. What was the item? Only...THE SOUNDTRACK TO LEVIATHAN! Yes, 39 minutes of Jerry Goldsmith mastery.

Cunts.  There's no way this won't be anything other then a disappointment.  Even with lowered expectations.  If they hire mediocre talent to write and direct, we can just forget this being anything like the originals.

Looks like Die Hard will remain a trilogy.  Like Indiana Jones.

Hey Guys, To me, the only films worth seeing the...Remainder of 2011 are...The Killer Elite and The Three Musketeers 3D!  Other than those, the next film I have...Any interest in will be released on...February 17th, 2012...Ghost Rider Spirit Of Vengeance!  I did think about seeing Tintin, but I was Underwhelmed by the trailer.  An...Impossible Mission would be convincing me to see...Ghost Protocol.  After the...Glorious MI:2 Directed by John Woo, Mission Impossible has been stuck in...Cruise Control, and not in a good way!  I am done with...Die Hard.  I will be sticking with...Die Hard 2: Die Harder, and Die Hard.  It is similar to...The Terminator, and T2 Judgement Day, the first 2 films are so superior, there isn't any reason to see any new ones.

Yeah, I'm definitely going to be heading to our Olive Garden and utilizing my 25% off discount on that promotion.

BTW, Rene, Endless Shrimp starts up next week at Red Lobster and will likely run through the start of November.

lolooolooolo when John Moore was first mentioned, I knew he'd wind up directing DIE HARD 5: MILKIN IT.
He's one of those no talent puppet directors that Bruno loves working with.

Die Hard: RED TERROR will be one of the top action films of 2013!

Horrific decision going with Moore. Hard to picture any scenario in which DIE HARD 5 doesn't end up a forgettable snore.

Oh, Bruno, why do you keep letting us down so?!!

My movie viewing this evening: BODY DOUBLE followed up by the Blu of GRINDHOUSE.

Best thing about Body Double aside from Deborah Shelton, Greg Henry, and the sleazy Donaggio score is the Frankie Goes To Hollywood music video/porn movie. That's just awesome and hilarious at the same time.

Again, I am FAR more concerned with the script and Bruce actually PLAYING John McClane than I am with John Moore.  We all knew Bruno would be calling the shots anyway and Moore is competent enough to shoot action that we will be able to follow.  I'm not shocked in the least by Moore being chosen.  After all, Bruce was gunning hard to get Wiseman back before Len signed up to do the Total Recall remake instead.  Personally, I'm wondering if Noam Murro bailed because he didn't have much creative control over the film.  I'll keep my hopes up that we will be getting a decent entry in the franchise.  I don't dislike any of the others, after all.  I'm not expecting something on par with the McTiernan entries, but I wouldn't mind something closer in quality to DH2 than LFODH.  The main factor there will be whether or not Willis actually gives a shit.  He didn't last time, so let's hope something has changed.

Besides, we might as well get used to it.  Unless this tanks, Bruce is definitely going to get his wish of this series hitting SIX installments.

Even if the script is great, which is likely a long shot at this point, for an action film to work you need a director who knows how to create tension and stage an exciting set piece. John Moore knows none of this. I'd call him plain vanilla, but I actually enjoy plain vanilla ice cream which is more than I can say for the films of John Moore.

Why doesn't Fox go with Rupert Wyatt? Saved one of their franchises. See if he can go 2 for 2.

Because Wyatt (and others like him) would be far less likely to let Willis and the execs walk all over him.  Personally, I don't know why Bruce just doesn't direct it himself and hire an awesome DP and stunt team.

Hey guys, Armond White described Moore's style as"a Peckinpahesque, neo-Eisenstein stylist whose grade-B material has kept him from receiving the acclaim he deserves". Maybe we're all wrong.

True Grit. Just watched this tonight and thought it was great. Bridges, Damon, and especially  Hailee Steinfeld give excellent performances. One minor quibble: it doesn't look much like Oklahoma. Kinda took me out of it a bit.

Sucker Punch. An action extravaganza! No, not really Hunter. It wasn't as bad as I figured it would be, but didn't do much for me either. I sure hope he doesn't fuck up Man of Steel.

Black Death. I was expecting a lot more from this one, but it just doesn't deliver. One good bloody action scene, but the rest was fairly predictable.

Sigh; yet, it's true.

I got back moments ago from seeing Scarface on the big screen. It was a one night only thing to celebrate that film coming out on Blu-Ray this upcoming Tuesday. It was a Potato In Your Pants Good Time. It looked and sounded so good; it certainly beat the first time I saw the movie on two VHS tapes way back when. The Moroder score blasting through the speakers was pretty nice, and Michelle Pfeiffer was at her Potato In Your Pantsingly-Best in terms of looks. I am glad I finally got to see it on the big screen, and even better, the crowd there wasn't as rough as I expected and there was little problem with them acting like dumbasses too, which was my bigger fear.

Moore actually championed Max Payne's PG-13 rating. Doesn't bode well for Die Hard: RED TERROR. That's about the only thing that upset me about Max Payne.

I'd be all for Bruno directing an entry. Maybe for the last one?

Watched Batman '89 on Blu-ray and did a live tweet session for it. Still one of my favorite films of all time and one of the 4 or 5 films that collectively share the number 1 spot. Maybe even 6 now that I get thinking about certain movies.

It will always be one of my all-time favorites.  It might not be the best adaptation ever, but it is a damn good movie and is still my second favorite Batman movie.

Well if you look at the directors that champion PG-13 and the ones that trash it, there's a clear distinction in quality.

Ridley Scott - "“No, not at all. (Basically Prometheus would not be hampered by PG-13)  I have a responsibility to my studio, but I always make sure we have both options. You’re crazy not to."

Guillermo Del Toro - "PG-13 is the refuge of many cowards".

I recall John Hyams shitting on the PG-13 rating on his commentary for the US:R dvd.

Then there's guys like Verhoeven, Michael Mann, Martin Scorsese and Quentin Tarantino who always make R rated flicks.

Then look at the PG-13 champions. John Moore, Len WIseman, Johnathan Liebesman, McG. Bunch of fucken yes men with no style or balls.

Also, Batman '89 FTW. Still one of my alltime favourites and by far the best Batman flick for me.

Mister Falcon, I am aware of...Airwolf The Movie.  It is just a re-cut of the...Pilot and another episode.  This is done in Europe, and sometimes "The Movie" is shown in theaters.  Universal also did this with Battlestar Galactica years ago, when they combined...The Living Legend with Fire In Space.  In that case, it was released on video in the US.  Thank you for the heads up.

Dude Hallenbeck, You don't want to see...G.I. Joe 2? Gee, I thought everyone wanted to see the...Joe Sequel Too!

Kinda a sad commentary of our times when we aren't looking forward to a Die Hard sequel. We grizzled veterens have been burned way too many times I suppose.

So I just finished watching Event Horizon because I heard it was a better version  of Pandorum but instead it just turned out to be a dull rip-off of Solaris  and Disney's Black Hole. At least Pandorum was a thought provoking allegory, this was just an uninspired mediocre B movie.

felix, Die Hard is like a...Zombie!  As a franchise, it is somewhat alive, with less talented directors, PG 13 ratings, and a desire by Bruce Willis to continue them.  I saw DH: WAV, but didn't care for the film, especially the weak ending.  Die Hard 2 is still the...Pinnacle of the series for me.  Maybe the new title could be...Die Hard 5: Try Harder Next Time!
