I saw it the weekend or 2 after it was released, and aside from the perpetual darkness (why couldn't they light it properly?), I dug it. Believe I paid full price for it too!
I feel for you, Tyler. Seeing that thing either around Christmas, or Christmas day would have sucked. Very rarely do I ever see a movie on Christmas. I'm too busy being lazy and seeing the movies I got for Christmas.
Like to introduce this HK Classic to you. Fun action. Awesome stunts.
Just give it a chance. There are subtitles for you as well.
Hmmm. Interesting. This is some Hong Kong insanity that I hadn't heard of before; I usually have nothing against Hong Kong insanity, either. Maybe one day I'll sit down to watch this.

Right now I'm watching another Christmas classic, National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation. Not much else to say, other than it never fails to make me constantly laugh.
Interesting. That reminds me of a movie I watched recently for the first time in many years, the recently mentioned in this thread Silent Night, Deadly Night. That's mean-spirited but wildly entertaining, and of course I didn't complain about all the nudity and gore you see. I've never seen any of the sequels although like most I have seen the WTF known as the Garbage Day Massacre from Part 2.
Christmas Vacation indeed is still a great film. I'm sure Rene is forever a fan of that hot chick selling lingerie who causes Clark W. Griswold to go from 6 to 12 whenever he thinks about her and inspires that great sequence of her in that red bikini, which is the SECOND best fantasy dream sequence in film of a hot chick in a red bikini taking off her top...

Yes, apparently so given that they said it's "based on a true story", although after the beginning they made all that shit up. Epic Beard Man unfortunately never went on a rampage kicking ass and crashing city buses.
The past few days for me haven't been too excited. Besides the film I already mentioned I didn't do any movie watching from Friday to now. I did hang out with family, though, and got gift cards and some clothing (i.e. pajamas) so overall it was a nice day. Tonight I went to a sports bar to watch some football and drink some alcohol, so that was another reason why this day was good.
I also wanted to say when this thread started, I didn't post much in it because I wasn't watching alot of B-Movies and it began to grow into a behemoth that's still growing, it's kinda scary. The sheer size scared me but once I started to get back into watching more B-Movies, I finally dived in and it's been a total blast, like your favorite bar on a friday night. Here's to you fine gentlemen (and women).
This.
I have to say that the B-Action Thread has been my lifeline for the past couple of years. There's nothing better than being part of a community of polite, insightful folks that love fun films.
There are dozens of great films out there that the vast majority of audiences have forgotten or yet to see (e.g Death Machine, US:R). The very fact that you know who Scott Adkins, Gary Daniels and Mark Dacascos puts you in a very exclusive Club (that more people should join). I'll bet most of today's youth don't even know these guys are.
I also hope that more people discover the Academy Award worthy performance that Jean-Claude Van Damme did in Until Death.
Seriously, I love this community within the community, and I'm very happy that as felix pointed out, we're all polite and insightful. That's a rarity among all message boards. There's always people having meltdowns and arguing with each other, and here we're all friends. I'm also happy because I've made friends on facebook that are Chewers, and some I chat with on an almost daily basis. Good people.
No, Rene! I'm with dude, I gathered a couple buddies to see AvP - R the weekend it opened (maybe not the day), and all three of us hated it. We were pretty low-level miserable until the one guy yells "Get to the chopper!" and then it turned into all-out loathing. Still, in years since, reflecting upon it, the more painful bit for me has to be the coda, which has the balls to try and introduce something into the fucking Alien mythos with the shot of Yutani in some ridiculous fucking costume. Bullshit. BULLSHIT. Fuck you, Brothers Strause.
AVP:R is pretty much a SyFy Channel movie. Only with better effects.
I don't understand why some of the scenes are so darkly lit? Seriously, you can barely see ANYTHING in some of them.
Aren't these Strause guys effects artists too? You'd figure they'd want to show off all the effects in as brightly lit an environment as possible. That's me talking as a guy who finds it lazy afternoon decent entertainment.
Loving the Trejo Bad-Ass poster. I remember seeing it before, but we weren't sure it was real. Whatever happened to that low-budget Death Wish knock-off he did?
Bullet in the Head is like a mini-Expendables for us. A film we thought would never exist, but is incoming. It will be my first Walter Hill film in a theatre (glad I skipped on Supernova).
Mel Gibson's wife doesn't deserve just half of his wealth, she deserves half of everything he ever makes in the future, too. She was married to the guy for decades!!! She put up with him far longer then the Russian Gold-digger did and never acted like a victim either, not to mention having a bunch of kids with him. Also, this will mean he will need to keep busy. Maybe we will see a sequel to The Passion.
This months Impact has a great interview with Gareth Evans regarding The Raid. Some of the things mentioned include:
- The Raid was a back-up script for a project called, Berandal. This was a Prison/Gangster film that was fully planned out but ended up being too expensive.
- While the fights won't feature takes as long as the fights in Merantau, he's committed to filming action in wide shots that can be seen clearly.
- One of the stars, Joe Taslim, is being primed for solo projects.
- The Raid sequel which Evans 'rushed' into production, is actually a slightly re-worked Berandal scirpt. He used the attention for The Raid to gather enough cash to make it.
- He says while there are US and UK projects on the horizon for him, he is not looking to ditch Indonesia as a place to work.
All in all, lots of positive things coming. Let's hope The Raid can live up to the high expectations we now have for it.
Oh yes. I think they also protested Studio Interference when they made AVP:R.
Skyline is a better example of their work. I thought it was okay. Not the atrocity many people make it out to be. The special effects certainly are on par with any major blockbuster in recent years.
Clearly Beckinsale is hoping this series does for her what Fast and Furious did for Vin Diesel. She ditched the series for bigger and better things. Only things didn't work out and she's come crawling back. I never was a big fan of the Underworld films. I'd see them once and have no desire to revisit them.
I may check this out, but i won't be surprised if it get's savaged by critics. Hopefully, the running time means it's a tightly editing action extravaganza and not a cheap creature feature with barely any action.

Wasn't there a bit of a flap about Skyline's effects? Something about them using stuff that had actually been produced on Battle: L.A.'s budget?
Hope everyone had a nice Christmas weekend. Caught GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO. About a half hour longer than it needed to be but overall I enjoyed the atmosphere of the film. Was pleasantly surprised to Mr. Steven Berkoff with a prominent role in the picture. Don't think I've seen him in anything since LEGIONNAIRE.
I was reading the Wikipedia synopsis on it and saw his name pop up on there. That's really cool that he's still doing movies. I thought he was mostly just doing stage work.

I think they just considered it a conflict of interest that the Brothers Strause essentially got a first peek at the effects for Battle Los Angeles at the same time they happened to be making a competitive alien invasion film.

He was in The Tourist with Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie.
By the way, I watched Zack Snyder's 300 again last night. It really doesn't hold up as well as i hoped.
I liked the concept. But Snyder's signature slow mo shots makes this look a little pretentious now in hindsight.
Not sure if that's the word you're looking for. What it is is a stylistic choice meant to emphasize an action or an emotion, but done so frequently by Snyder that it's become a crutch, and worse, a joke.
Given that I was expecting the worse since my heart attack when I heard of the project, it actually isn't that bad in a way and it's at least watchable (I say better than AGENT RED, RETROGRADE or DIAMOND DOGS). But pretty bad and what a waste of what is ok or could have been ok... (I mean it actually has more resources in some departments than most Dolph flicks, and the scenery is pretty nice, as well as the orchestral score... but well Dolph turned it down first and came back on his decision because of his divorce (like I thought) and other personal stuff going on.
Won't hurt him much I guess given the skeletons in his closet, but it's a shame it had be the follow up to THE EXPENDABLES (and thankfully he has a good string of films coming before EX2, from Jonas Akerlund's SMALL APARTMENTS to UNIVERSAL SOLDIER 4 with also STASH HOUSE and ONE IN THE CHAMBER).
I got Sweet Karma and Chillerama from Wal-Mart today. I watched Sweet Karma tonight and thought it wasn't bad. It helped that the woman playing the title character was easy on the eyes. I also liked the twist near the end. I stopped Chillerama after Wadzilla but plan on finishing it. I thought Wadzilla was pretty good, with Ray Wise and Eric Roberts adding a touch of class to the proceedings.
Merry Chrismukwanzaah everyone. I've been out of the loop with work purgatory but am getting by nicely. Had myself a nice noir Christmas:
Slob is a book I've wanted to read for a while. It's Stephen King-endorsed splatter noir from the late 80's!
I have to catch up on a LOT of newer movies both in theaters and at home and really get myself back into the swing of things with watching movies. Thinking of going on a Poliziotteschi binge. Contraband and Revolver are the two biggies I've seen and there's a ton I know I have to see but does anyone have specific, urgent recommendations?

Bad Ass looks amazing. Holy shit, Trejo with that beard.
I would have murdered someone for a chance to see one of Walter Hill's films in theaters first-run (I was never of age or interested), but Bullet to the Head has made those wishes come true and I'll be there as soon as the fucker opens. Stallone must be following the medical advice of Dr. Jeffry Life, one of those guys whose presence takes up way too much time on cable-TV commercial breaks:
As much as it appears to be and you want to think, that's not a Photoshopped picture.

Had the same thoughts myself but a second viewing was more rewarding. I hope you enjoyed
the rape scene would be worse than the original. That was almost as bad as Dr. Melfi getting assaulted in the parking garage. But her revenge is just fucking brilliant.
Steven Berkoff, by the way, does have a decent-sized role in it. Maybe had more screen time than Christopher Plummer.

I think it's the third season that has the Coneheads on Family Feud and Bill Murray as a spot-on Richard Dawson that looks nothing like the real thing (it's basically Murray in a suit with his hair and mustache) but nails every expression. One of my favorite skits ever.
"Name something you eat with eggs---" FIBERGLASS.
Favorite SNL era, Elvis? I think the 70's had the better impact and cast but the second Michaels era is just too golden.
I managed to see a recording of the Mel Gibson episode recently and I must say, it was a letdown, even the much-coveted Lethal Weapon VI skit where Danny Glover cameos.
I think it's worth reposting this just because:
Matrix, Rene will argue me but Wadzilla was the only reason to see it. That was like the best Kids in the Hall skit never made.
Wadzilla is amazing, but as I said, it was The Diary Of Anne Frankenstein that launched me into laughing convulsions. I plan on seeing my Blu-ray of Chillerama later this evening.
Right now I'm watching Mad Men: Season 4. I don't know if it's very well known (Hunter knows), but I'm not a big fan of the series. I blind bought the first 3 seasons last Black friday on Hunter's suggestion, and aside from a few things here and there, found them to be pretty dull. To add to my disdain, the one character that I thought was actually interesting, Sal Romano, gets fired because he rebukes the advances of the son of the owner of Lucky Strike cigarettes, and this results in him getting fired. Don Draper is cool too, of course, and Christina Hendricks makes sure my attention is to the screen when she's on.
Anyway, I'm 3 episodes in, and it's not too bad, but I'm still feeling as not caring as I did with the other 3 seasons. For the record, I only got this season, because it was on sale during Black friday, and I figured why not continue checking it out. Maybe I'll find a season that will make watching it worth while.

I share your enthusiasm for seeing Berkoff in that one. It made me like the movie that much more.

Oddly enough it was the Cop Land in there that caught my attention. Didn't know it was on bluray.
I'd rank the 91-94 era around #1, mostly because that's when I first got into SNL, and so many sketches were brilliant. Stuff like "Canteen Boy"!
I also remember a skit from around 2000 that involved Will Ferrell playing "I Say A Little Prayer For You" on a trumpet and constantly screwing it up. Laughed a lot at it, and wish I could find it, because I don't remember who the host was. Anybody know?
I finally moved into this century and bought a Blu-Ray player. My first Blu-Ray disc? Thor! It looks amazing but I see now that I'm going to have to upgrade my sound system. I was also going to buy the Captain America BD, but Wal-Mart didn't have any in stock.
I've been meaning to put together a home theater system as well, Falcon. Think I'll get a receiver and use the speakers I have now, and maybe add some more, as well as a subwoofer.
I finished watching Christmas Evil earlier today. Not nearly as interesting as I was hoping, but it kept my attention for the most part. It's only got a small bit of gore, and it's more about a man snapping and descending into madness. I may eventually pick it up, but don't go in expecting Silent Night, Deadly Night.
Going to get some redbox movies. Probably Straw Dogs and Zombie Apocalypse (the third zombie film with Ving Rhames, oh what happened to you Ving! You used to be in classy stuff, like Homicide, but then again he was in The People Under the Stairs, so ya...keep on truckin'), I'll let you guys know.
NIce to hear that Bullet to the Head is coming soon. (unrelated) I wish they'd release Woo's Bullet in the Head on blu ray proper, now! I got rid of my vhs like a fucking moron back in the day.
Even though it's supremely late over here, I'm on vacation, and one of the perks of that is being able to stay up late, and go to the Redbox to rent movies. I don't know if any of the other gents who rent movies from there know this or not, but there's a loophole in the 1 day rental for (now) $1.29. If you rent a movie after 9 or even later in the night, your time is extended basically to the next day! Instead of the movies needing to be in by 9 pm tomorrow, they won't be due until wednesday! I ended up renting the new releases of Hostel: Part III, Apollo 18, and the Straw Dogs remake along with The Devil's Double since there was a lot of good word on here about it. Looking forward to seeing them.
That part seemed silly to me felix. What was that guy gonna say to anybody the condtion he was in?
Zombie Apocalypse wasn't bad for how cheap it was. Wasn't great either though, so buyer beware.
Straw Dogs is a good enough remake so far, but it does seem kind of pointless, people should just watch the original. About to enter Act 3, so we'll see if it finishes stronger. SPOILER: they really pussed out on the rape scene, not that I wanna see rape mind you, just saying compared to the original they pussed out.
I caught up with Ghost Protocol last night. I thought it was a lot of fun and appreciated the emphasis on teamwork. But it's erroneous to say it's the first film in the series that does that. M:i:III already did that.
Overall, I'm siding with the complaints about the villains. They really are like henchman bad guys from an action TV series. I barely remember them and it hasn't been 24 hours yet.
They focused a hell of a lot on the heroes this time and that's fine, I guess, but they did so at the expense of a truly involving and interesting storyline. The most interesting villain in the whole movie gets taken out half-way through.
The individual set pieces (the skyscraper in Dubai, the big fight in the car complex) are great. But, overall, I didn't find the movie as satisfying as the third one.
Basically, I'd say Ghost Protocol has the same weakness as the second one in that it's a forgettable plot. But the characters are more engaging and the action is more interesting. Jeremy Renner and Simon Pegg really do a lot for the movie.
So, if anyone cares, here's how I rank them.

I actually really liked the Straw Dogs remake a lot. It was a very pleasant surprise. Wonderfully shot. Very well acted. It doesn't break new ground and can't rise above just being a very slick thriller. But, if I'm being honest, I'd have to concede that Rod Lurie made a more entertaining film than the Peckinpah version. "More entertaining" doesn't necessarily mean better. But I would recommend this movie to people looking for a good thriller. Whereas, I wouldn't recommend the original for that purpose.
James Woods is terrific. He's like Frank Booths' younger, calmer brother.
So I was just about to cast my vote for SNL '81-82 (Murphy, Funny Piscopo, Gross, Duke, Kazurinski, Louis-Dreyfus, Kroeger, Hall) and then THIS hit the newswire:
Looking forward to seeing the Straw Dogs remake either later this evening, or tomorrow, since I don't have to send them back today. Right now I'm watching Apollo 18. It's about as dull as I've been hearing it is. I hope it picks up, it feels like so much has already happened, and it's only 26 minutes in, which means I still have to sit an hour longer through it.
I pretty much agree with ya there about Straw Dogs Erix.
I forgot to mention that I finally watched 10 to Midnight last night too. It was pretty good once it got going. Bonuses for all the female nudity and the unintentional bad acting/hilarity...Example: "Who is this? Oh no! Oh god no! Betty's dead!" and the killer's fake accent, the killer's freak out where he throws the chair against the door, and penis sucker thing HAHAAAA.
p.s. and it was nice to see the girl from the Thriller video nude in there also. what a beauty.
Apollo 18 was pretty much a wash. A few good ideas, and if I found it cheap I MIGHT pick it up just because, but it's basically a rental. If you're curious, you'll see it and probably be bored by it because it has a great concept that is executed very poorly.
Watching the Celtics/Heat, I keep seeing commercials for JOHN CARTER. Can't get up much enthusiasm. But Mark Wahlberg's CONTRABAND and Soderbergh's HAYWIRE look cool. Nice cast, HAYWIRE: thread legend Michael Douglas, Antonio Banderas, & Ewan McGregor.
So when I went to the post office to check my mailbox, not only did I get in Nick Nunziata's Christmas gifts of Warrior and 13 Assassins (he told me there's another package coming along!), but I also got in most of my orders from Deep Discount and one Half.com order. Vampire Circus and The Dorm That Dripped Blood on Blu-ray, 42nd Street Forever vols 2-4, along with XXX-Treme Edition (it's trailers for "adult" fare), and Triumph Of The Will, the Leni Riefenstahl Nazi film. I also got a sleazy 80's comedy called Screwballs on Blu-ray. Haven't seen that movie since 2005.
Yes, it's going to be an interesting next couple of days.
Warrior is going for 99 cents on the PSN for rental, so I'll be watching it as soon as possible. While I'm at it, I have a lot of catchup to play on movies and I guess everything about Straw Dogs is breaking me into watching it.

I saw it tonight. Brad Bird delivered on the action and the cast is great but the screenplay is terrible, the villain is boring (especially after Philip Seymour Hoffman was so great in the third one) and while the action is great it feels needless in the movement of the story. And whoever made the decision that
the villain should COMMIT SUICIDE like a coward instead of having an ACTUAL DEATH
deserves to be punched in the face. This is Mission: Impossible, not The Shawshank Redemption, okay?
In the end, it's like watching an anorexic who wears a Wonderbra and the reveal of her deficient chest is shenanigans.
But I'll be back for the next one.
Erix, we need to discuss this movie ASAP.

FACT: our good friend Gruber (who endorsed the Straw Dogs remake) walked out of Apollo 18, and I know he'll find it ridiculous that you gave it a negative review but still have something apologetic to say.

I'll see both of 'em for sure but I'm incredibly stoked for Haywire. A martial arts revenge movie with that cast from the guys behind The Limey? Sold.
Elvis, I was actually JUST thinking about Sharky's Machine earlier because of the spoiler in my Ghost Protocol writeup here and that it takes the deserved path at the end for the bad guy. That said, it's a flawed film that could actually benefit from a remake, and as much as I like Wahlberg, I'd rather see it closer to the recast someone did with Ben Affleck directing and Jeremy Renner starring.
Seven words: Michael Shannon in the Henry Silva role.
