Oh, fuck it, fine.
It was THIS MEANS WAR and it's a disaster of a movie from every conceivable angle. One of the worst things I've ever sat through. Every single thing about this movie sucks, and nothing works. The action is incoherent, weightless and cartoony without being funny. The plot makes no sense. The jokes are CBS sitcom-worthy. Chris Pine is an asshole, and Tom Hardy, as "hunky" as he is, does not look comfortable as a romantic lead at all. The movie sounds like it's scored by the elevator music in a Chuck E. Cheese's.
Til Schweiger is the MAIN GUY, who has some sort of plan, but it's clearly not important because no one cares. He goes around the world to find out who Chris Pine's tailor is simply because he wants revenge, so clearly he's an anal-retentive villain with limitless resources. And then his big plan at the end is to take Reese Witherspoon (playing a retard, apparently) hostage.
This movie will entertain NO ONE. Women won't like it because the guys spend the movie lying to her, and she falls for everything like an idiot. Men won't like it because there's very little action in it's barely 90 minute runtime. If someone told me this was made by twelve year olds, I would believe them. McG is officially over, 100%. Fuck this movie with Liam Neeson's fist.
Gabe T, I think...Ghost Rider's Spirited Vengeance will make This Means War, Box Office...Toast! CAGEy Nic, will gain...Top Spot in the box office President's Day Weekend, and not even well intentioned...Navy Seals, can stop...Neveldine/Taylor's..Sequel without Equal!

Yes. I'm not even going to try and say something witty. I'm just standing behind Duke and saying it's all about the Rider!!!!!
Speaking of Cage, he had a pretty amusing appearance on Letterman last night. Particularly liked his Charlie Sheen anecdote:
Gina Carano will be a special guest at Action Fest 2012 (April 12-15, Asheville, NC USA)
That was pretty cool how he managed to keep pulling it back from getting awkward again and again.

I saw the last movie from the same director (ACROSS THE LINE) and it was pretty dry and sorta wasted a cool DTV cast . The plot for this one on paper seems to lend itself for a little more fun so I'll give him the benefit of the doubt that he'll loosen things up a bit.
I rented that one today. I chose to rent a poorly reviewed film solely for the presence of Gary Daniels over the seemingly spectacular Crazy, Stupid, Love. Which is really the way to sum up my whole life. Hopefully the action is well shot, because the image of Gary Daniels laying down suppressing fire for Luke Goss and Bokeem Woodbine in what looks to be a chaotic gunfight on the back of the DVD has me a tad excited.
They did it right at least once;
Rated R!
Think I may rent Shark Night, despite the bad word of mouth, and even one of my students mentioning that it's not worth it. In his words "The shark looked fake."
So there's going to be a Legion tv series. I can barely contain myself. I'll definitely be seeing it. Wouldn't doubt it that my Dad will as well, since he watches the Sci-Fi channel a lot too.
Just watched a French 70's crime movie/Noir that I put up with my decade favorites: THE OUTSIDE MAN. Plot: A French hitman comes to L.A. and carries out an assignment, the assassination of an American crime boss. Unfortunately, for him the the set up is on and he's not to make it out alive. He's on the run, with only a female contact (Ann-Margret) to help him navigate the city, and on his tail another hitman, a menacing Roy Scheider. Verdict: A great L.A. movie with a European sensibility, it's fast paced, action-packed, and very violent; there's a middle stretch in the movie that reminded me of NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN in its sense of unrelenting danger, with an ending that is memorably 70's 'nobody wins' bleak. Trivia: in a scene where the French hitman is holding up with a family watching TV, the bratty little kid is one Jackie Earle Haley.
Can't wait to see what you think of Drive, Woods.
Safe House was a milquetoast. I've forgotten half of it by now. Simply a lazy thrill that doesn't exploit its full potential. Those of you who are curious, Ruben Blades (and Robert Patrick) get near next to shit to do with their parts, and the rest of the cast is expository in their presence.
Oh, and this might have the most deliberate and annoying shaky cam to date. Might not be a 10 out of 10, but it's sure as hell a 10 on the Richter scale.
RUSH is on, and I'm going to watch it. Motherfuckin' Gregg Allman.
Just watched Killer Elite and the sound work was amazing. So brutal and impressive. The Clive/Statham hospital fight started off eh but ended up being very satisfying. There were so many convincing stunts where it really looked and sounded like someone was actually getting fucked up.
Can't believe how hard they botched the marketing. This was a spy thriller, not the typical Stathem-fest. Though it was a tad too long I had a good time and that chick from Chuck would receive the business end of my disco stick.
Still can't believe This Means War is a movie. Literally. I've seen the poster once and have seen maybe one second of footage and I don't believe Pine and Hardy signed onto this. It seems like a joke movie. How the fuck do you rope those two into a McG film? Does Supernatural really justify this man's career?
One of my favorite abrupt endings!
How that didn't get any Oscar nominations is mysterious. "Tears in Heaven" should have gotten something at the very least, let alone Patric and Leigh.
Looks like Safe House will open to $40 million. Continuing the epic winnery for R rated cinema and potentially beat out The Vow.
Rented Texas Killing Fields and Shark Night earlier. Looking forward to seeing Texas Killing Fields after hearing a lot of good word about it.
And she was a writer on Nancy Drew, so you know she good with detective stories.
Really surprised on how well Safe House is doing. Way better than anyone expected.
Can we count this to the Denzel Factor? The Ryan Reynolds Factors? Or were people just looking for some hard Action stuff this week?
Hmm...I always knew Denzel was a solid draw. But not on this level ($38 mill weekend?).
Let's celebrate his win to this song!

Errrr. If you've seen it by now you'll know Daniels is wasted. So if you rented the film because of him, that's unfortunate. I thought the film was OK, nothing special.
Very similar (in Title and style) is La Linea (The Line). Daniels role is pretty much sitting and listening to someone bitch for a couple of scenes.
The film is also of note because is wastes the potential of a Tommy Vercetti and Umberto Robina reunion.
'Show me you've got some big Cajones, not some itty bitty chiquita ones!!!'

Shark Night was a fail. Unless you like flying sharks, the film is a total tease. You've got sharks, some unlikable bait and then some seriously weak payoffs.
This picture sums up the film. You'll see plenty of Paxton's ass, but little of the shark attacks.
Oh yeah, I saw Legion this morning.........before I flushed.

I'm guessing their agents told them it couldn't fail. On paper, I would think there was good reason to think that. Responses toward the film, have shown something went wrong.
Either way, not interested anymore.
Quote:
Shame to hear that Denzel's put out another mediocrity. I was hoping this one would turn out OK I will still give it a shot (with lowered expectations).
Blue, The Grey's performance has nothing to be ashamed of. It's an independent release that scared off the major studios and still made money.
Well the disc from netflix of Sharky's Machine was cracked, even though someone had super glued it, not gonna try and play that in my player. Why don't people just report it broken and get another copy sent to them? Thats what I'm gonna do. Never had a problem doing it either.
Stake Land should show up later tonight. Can't wait to check it out. Hope its not cracked too.
Guess I'll be waiting to see Safe House as a rental now. Thanks to everyone for the heads up.
You guys are the best.
I'd like some recommendations. Best of Florentine, Adkins and other B-movies. I like theatrical B-Movies but never indulged in the DTV fare. Foreign recommendations are always welcome, as well.
I think I might watch Time & Tide this weekend.

I am soooo down for this mini-series. Too bad I don't' have basic cable anymore. I see box set in my future.
Came across this earlier on facebook. I guess Square Enix is getting into the GTA-style game. Even if the game sucks, there will still be this trailer. For my money, a perfect mini-movie of ass kicking excellence.
Sleeping Dogs is True Crime: Hong Kong. Activision cancelled it when it was almost finished and SE bought the game (but not the IP) and changed the name.
For DTV recommendations, I'd go with following: Universal Soldier: Regeneration, Blood and Bone, Sinners and Saints, Undisputed II and III (the first one is great too in a very different way), and Black Dynamite (limited theatrical) if you haven't seen it yet.
I need to get around to seeing/buying The Tournament, but most regulars to the thread seem to like it.
So I watched Slither for the first time with the wife last night, my god I can understand the hype now. Yet another reason I am forever a member of the Michael Rooker fanclub. The man has the dubious distinction of being the best actor in Cliffhanger. I need to watch Replicant and Renegade Force ASAP.
Thanks for your recommendations. I've been wanting to watch UNISOL:R since release. Replicant isn't very good from what I remember. Incredibly disappointing Hyams venture.
I love Rooker. But you can't say that about a movie that features John Lithgow as a classic villain.
And Rex Linn is great too.
..........
All these R-rated box office hits are really making Sylvester Stallone look like an asshole.

You guys are the best.
Stake Land is GREAT. You'll enjoy it. I can imagine the movie as Jack Crow being alone, taking a kid on as a sidekick, and losing his sense of humor. That's how the awesome lead is. He was also in Mulberry St. A great take on the "virus" sub-genre. Check that one out if you haven't seen it.
I'm anticipating the series as well, and don't have cable either. If I want to see it, I'll have to go to my parents' house to see it.

Slither is pretty good. I enjoyed it when i saw it in the theater. The real MVP of that film is Gregg Henry. In one film he subverts everything you previously thought about him.
Can't watch Ralph Waite's death in Cliffhanger without expecting the emotional "THIS MAN NEVER HURT ANYBODY!" line from Rooker that really is...emotional.
Lithgow owns the movie. I was going to mention Rex Linn as well, but you beat me to it. Travers' freak out at the end is almost even worse than Paxton's in Aliens.
I really hope Stallone sees this and just fixes EX2. HE HAS TO!
Suggestion: I say Rooker could have carried Cliffhanger alone. What do you think? By the way, where is that guy? Last movie I've noticed him in was Slither.
I watched Rush Hour last night. Hadn't seen it since the theaters and damn. That movie is a very serious rip off of Beverly Hills Cop. I had to actually do a double take when Rex Linn stepped on screen. I thought he was John Ashton for a brief second. Still, it made me think of how much more i would've liked it if Chris Tucker had been switched for Eddie Murphy... and how Brett Ratner should have been switched for Martin Brest.
Don't get me wrong, I love Lithgow as much as the next guy. He was solely responsible for making me like Dexter again for a season, but he seemed a little half-cocked in Cliffhanger. His accent didn't help my opinion either. He does his job well enough, but it can't even begin to touch his performance in Ricochet. Rooker, on the other hand, is really giving it his all in a movie with very poor dialog. I tip my hat to the man. It seems like he really is going to kill Stallone for a moment. Very good call on Rex Linn, gotta love that mustache.
In salute to Rooker in Cliffhanger, I found this.
The intensity just crackles.
And I second you on the R rated asshole thing. Stallone really shit the bed on that one.
Caught CHRONICLE. I know both Hunter and Fazer enjoyed it and I'll lend my support as well. Really well done super hero but not really a super hero flick. Well worth checking out.
Pragmatic did a fine job running down the best from the last few years. The Adkins/Florentine pairing NINJA is good as well.
Though it's more a DTV crime drama than all-out action the Cuba Gooding/Miguel Ferrer yarn WRONG TURN AT TAHOE should be seen.
Here's a few titles from back in the day that are worth tracking down if you haven't caught them yet:
ARMY OF ONE
MEN OF WAR
RAGE (Gary Daniels)
AMERICAN YAKUZA
DRIVE (Dacascos)
LAST MAN STANDING (Wincott)
EXTREME JUSTICE
He was just in SUPER as Kevin Bacon's main henchman, probably took the role as a favor for James Gunn. Plus he's had a reoccurring role on The Walking Dead.
Feel like Rooker is someone who should be showing up on Justified. He'd fit in perfectly.

Can I ask where you saw this? It's not even listed on Netflix, and I've always been interested in checking it out.

Not to mention Gregg Henry ("Lime Disease?).
Didn't you just love the In-jokes in this? They used the Predator Theme during the "Get the guns" scene. Also "Earl Basset High School".

Eh, I'm not complaining, I got my Daniels fix out of it. It was pretty identical to La Linea, but Daniels had more to do this time around.
After the incredibly dismal SACRIFICE, I made the decision to never watch a movie starring Cuba Gooding Jr, ever again. Miguel Ferrer's presence in this piques my interest.
But, then again, even the wonderful Kim Coates was unable to save Sacrifice.
I ordered the VHS off of Amazon.
Speaking of Amazon: My Warner Archive DVD of the George C. Scott crime movie THE LAST RUN arrived today. Looking forward to checking it out tonite.
Time n Tide is a great choice.
The guys already recommended some of the best dtvs. For foreign I'd say almost any Johnny To: The Big Heat, The Mission, Breaking News (one of the best opening shots ever), Throwdown (probably the best thing he's ever done), Exiled (probably my personal favorite of his). From other directors: A Bittersweet Life, The Good the Bad the Weird, Born to Fight, Duel to the Death, The Man From Nowhere.
I too endured SACRIFICE on cable a few weeks back. Utterly horrifying. But trust me, WRONG TURN AT TAHOE is legit. To me it's more Ferrer's movie than Cuba's but Cuba is just fine in it.
Harvey Keitel also has a few scenes as Ferrer's rival crime boss and he's good. He's not just cashing a check.
I totally understand your trepidation with regards to Cuba's dtv output. It is garbage and I'm ashamed to admit for some reason I've seen most of it (I think because I just want more action movies). But I gotta agree with Molti here TAHOE was a great little surprise. Check it out.
By the look on his face in the poster, even Samuel L. Jackson doesn't want to watch Arena.
Who the fuck is Kellan Lutz? That seems like a name I'd want to change if I ever made it big in hollywood.
Flipping channels, I came across Carpenter's CHRISTINE and even edited for TV it sucked me in. "Christine" is in my top 5 favorite King books, so I've always been hard on this adoption (there's a mountain road car chase that reads so cinematic, I hate we don't get it in the movie) However, it's golden age Carpenter, so there's good stuff in there. And I love Keith Gordon's nerd darkside.
Anybody seen Running Red with Jeff Speakman? Is it worth my time?
All I think of when I hear that name...
