It looks interesting, but if I manage to make it out to a movie anytime soon............it's not high on my list. I still haven't seen The Grey, The Woman In Black, the apparently-great Chronicle, or the supposedly-bad-but-I-want-to-see-it Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance. That and the wife wants to see This Mean's War and/or One For The Money.
Still, I'm interested to hear how it turns out. If it's good enough, I might try and catch it after work sometime in the near future.
EDIT - Also, the duo who directed Act of Valor are doing Arnold's upcoming film, Black Sands (which looks like it will be made after The Tomb). So if you see it, keep that in mind and report back on that aspect as well!!!

Vern did this excellent review of Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance.
I like the points he touches on here. Especially the MEGA acting that Cage loves to do.

I believe Cage himself has coined the term "Nouveau Shamanic" in reference to his acting style. He promises to write a book about it someday. I'm sure if and when it gets published, it will be WELL worth the wait if he puts his mind to it.

I have no site, aside from a personal Flickr. It's just the nature of post production work, where you work until you hit the point where they no longer have anything left to do. It sonuds like I have something lined up for late March, so it's going to be nice to be able to have a few weeks of downtime. Definitely going to seek out The Sweeper.

Though a remake of an '86 film with Keith Caradine and Harvey Keitel, the project of THE INQUIRY was promising, with an eclectic cast comprising of not only Von Sydow but F. Murray Abraham, Ornella Mutti, Penelope Cruz cute little sis' Monica, PASSION OF THE CHRIST Hristo Shopov and other descent European actors (Anna Kanakis and Daniele Liotti who seem to be popular in his home country), a low for an epic but still $10 million budget, and the role of a Germanic Barbarian (in the true sense of the word) for Dolphy, it seemed a good move on the dawn of his comeback after his stepping behind the camera with unexpected gems such as THE DEFENDER and THE MECHANIK.
But it was partly financed by Italian Rai TV channel and meant to premiere there as a two-part TV movie (or mini-series as you like) which I think influenced how it was directed with a "naive" sensibility (and PG battle scenes poorly staged, shot and chopped in the editing)... It's also a big story with too many characters and subplot, which in the internationaly released "theatrical" cut of 112 mins cannot function it does in the 190 mins TV version.
And so is Lundgren's character, which offers some of Dolph's best and unsual acting in the longer version, great deleted scenes which makes his role more important in the story and very likeable, even funny at times... I really hope the big Swede will make a proper viking or Middle Ages flick with some good axe and sword slicing and dicing, before he's at the age of just sitting on a throne! Anybody seen Nicolas Winding "Drive" Refn's VALHALLA RISING? Something like that could be perfect for him and being done on a budget... He should give give Refn a call anyway.
Thanks for sharing this information. I might have a look for that complete version. Maybe when it gets a UK release it'll be that version.
Mel Gibson is still planning on doing his Viking film, Dolph should lobby for a part.

You're welcomed, that's what I'm here for! The long TV version has been released on DVD anywhere (not even Italy), I caught a rip of when it aired on TV (and all in Italian...), I wish they'd release it but given how unpopular the movie is I highly doubt it happens... yeah doesn't even have a UK release yet (and it's from 2006!)
Hell yeah do we know what stage is it at?
I had read in a 1991 German movie magazine (so who knows how reliable that was) that Dolph was to be in a Joel Silver project called VIKING.
Speaking of Silver it's a shame because he had attempted a couple projects with Dolph in the 80s it seems but none of them happened: MAN TO MAN by Craig Baxley (cancelled 2 days before shooting because they didn't have the co-star and exec producers argued over it), that was a year before DARK ANGEL / I COME IN PEACE by the way - and WATCHMEN, as Silver wanted Lundgren for Dr. Manhattan in Terry Gilliam's 1989-90 version (but Gilliam wasn't enthused about the idea) had it been made... So now Silver co-produced STASH HOUSE but this is him coming to the lower B movie market...

I've been programmed to hate every single thing from this Die Hard movie if it's not recognizably awesome* thus far. The negative elements currently in place are too overwhelming.
*Like, a Mamet re-write. Or Sam Rockwell being cast. Or Moore being replaced by John McTiernan. Something like that.

Yep, but I've always wondered who wrote The Book of Love...

So I've been seeing the ads for the new 21 Jump Street every time I turn on the tube and boy does it look just AWFUL. Like pulling teeth bad. I wasn't much of a fan of the TV series, but it probably deserves better than this. That new Eddie Murphy movie looks crappy too, but thats par for the course nowadays.
I saw a theatrical trailer for it when it preceded The Grey and that was certainly better than the commercials, but it still seems strange to me for a serious 80's TV show to be transformed into a comedy released on the big screen. And plus, Jonah Hill is someone I've grown tired of seeing of in movies, especially in his current anorexic phase.
The opinion of guys like Devin and AICN dudes won't sway me to the point that I want to see it.
Well, I'm back boys (and girls?). At first I thought about trying to catch up with everything that has been posted in my absence, but 400+ posts is just too intimidating and time consuming. Things are still a bit hectic at the homestead, but are slowly calming down.............so I should be back in regular fashion later in the week. Until then, I'll do my best to keep up! It's good to be back!
BTW, any major film or DVD/BR announcements in my absence? Obviously I'm referring to stuff that normally doesn't get covered on most sites.
Congratulations. I don't think you missed out on too much in the preceding few hundred posts, except that if you search for it I did a long write-up about a bizarre failed TV pilot I found online called Best of Times which had 80's stiffy in your pants babe Jill Schoelen, Crispin Glover, AND Nic Cage in his first role. Among other things, you briefly get to see Nic dance by doing the splits and kicking his legs in the air while he's on his back, Crispin get put IN THE FRIEND ZONE by Jill 30 years before people had a name for that concept, and Crispin and Jackie Mason talking about the Talking Heads!
I just might. The weekend could be busy but if I'm able to I could squeeze it in.

Oh man, those last two movies... you either have to watch Hunter's least favorite actress Katherine Heigl in the lead or watch something that Gabe T. said was one of the worst movies he's ever seen.
I can say for certain that The Grey is pretty awesome... including the ending.
I can't say I had ever heard of him before. Of course I've heard of his show but he isn't even the lead in that.
Although...
I never had high hopes for this 5th movie in the series after how the 4th turned out. All the decisions I've heard them make so far have lowered my interest more and more. I do think, though, that there are bigger problems than Fat Sam Worthington being cast.

It's clear that no director of merit or vision will work with the cunt Willis has become. I am positive Moonrise Kingdom will be the last time Anderson works with him.

Damn. I was hoping for Aaron Paul to pump some energy into this. Every decision is just generic as hell.

Tony Montana or Dirk Diggler should have called that number.
I ordered The Perfect Weapon on Blu-ray last night as well. This thread gets me to spend a lot of money too. Looks like I'll have to check out The Sweeper.
Good to hear it's coming out in a few months. I've gotten to the point where I'm actually happy certain movies are going DTV. Means I don't have to sit in a theater and listen to idiots talking or phones going off.
Been watch Beavis And Butthead: Volume 4 since last night. Pretty friggin' hilarious! This show had been sorely missed. Plus they make fun of those stains on humanity known as Jersey Shore, Teen Mom, and 16 And Pregnant.
They also still do music videos, and led to me seeing this.
Yes, this is probably the most amazing video I've seen in many years. It's certainly worth an implosion in your pants or 2.

I miss the Bruno who was taking risks and working with interesting directors. I must say, I am still excited about his film with Wes Anderson. I just hate that he's not taking any chances or surrounding himself with greatness on something that should be an ace in the hole, DIE HARD. I don't know if i'd call him a cunt- don't know where that's coming from- but he oozes a lack of passion.
I changed my mind on what i'm watching tonite - I'm going with a 60's Western starring Jimmy Stewart and Henry Fonda I DVR'd off of RETRO called FIRECREEK. I heard good things.

Watched the Frankenheimer version of The Island Of Dr. Moreau for the first time in a long time. I still remember seeing it in the theater and being mildly disappointed, but liking it overall. Now I just like it. Don't really see why it's so kicked down upon. Kilmer turns in the film's most wacky performance. Probably aided no doubt by his divorce. He's just so nuts in the film. Plus he does a hilarious impression of Brando.
Right now I'm watching the When A Stranger Calls remake. Not really great, but what are you going to expect from a remake that takes the beginning of the original and strings it out for an entire film? At least Camilla Bell is easy on the eyes, and thread legend Lance Henriksen is the voice on the phone. Tommy Flanagan plays the actual killer. For however briefly we see

I wasn't calling him a cunt in a personal way, if that makes any sense. He is really high on shadow directing which pisses off a lot of filmmakers. He is also horrific to extras, though that is pretty much the norm. Me calling him a cunt was "inside baseball" so I apologize for bringing it up. I use to be a huge fan of his but his choices have soured me.

That film was far less of an Action movie than you might think... still it was very, very good. Refn is one of my new favorite directors. Ever since Bronson.
Congratulations!
Eh, I don't mind this choice. I was hoping they would go with an unknown... though I would have preferred to be cast myself, of course. In any case, if the guy can do the McClane dance I will be happy for him.
I heard he got out, and is having to pay a steep fine or something.

There's some decent action, some handheld first-person videogamey stuff. It's not worth sitting through the lackluster story and awful "real life!" performances. 110% humorless.

At the risk of becoming Rene-esque, I'm actually thinking about watching Val Kilmer's RED PLANET tonite. I've never seen it. I remember back in the day, my best friend was really geeking out over two Mars movies coming out, but I only saw DePalma's MISSION TO MARS with him. I've heard terrible things - if I recall my friend hated it- but for whatever reason, flipping channels I got curious about it.

Did you ever see Fearless? Picture the plane crash from that, except nobody, not even Jeff Bridges, survives. And the plane lands on a gas truck.
I swear, watch them cast Til Schweiger as Klaus Gruber. In a way, I'm relieved they didn't cast Aaron Paul because then they would have actually threatened me to have interest in it.
I've never seen Live Free or Die Hard and I plan to keep it that way. Looks like this will keep the trend.
Amazing how G.I. Joe: Retaliation and Moonrise Kingdom seem to show him giving a shit again. Sin City was his last actual performance before Pod Willis took over, Planet Terror aside. Hell, his performance in Cop Out was worthy compared to coasting through Red.
Oh yeah, you guys hear they got the director of Galaxy Quest directing Red 2? DEAN PARISOT?
The first one was like ingesting an entire bottle of Benadryl. I'm sure the sequel will be a week's worth of Valium.
We can't be held responsible. For the life of me, we cannot remember we made us think that we were wise and we'd never compromise. For the life of me, I cannot believe we'd ever die for these sins. We were nearly freshmen.

RENE GET YOUR ASS IN HERE NOW GODDAMMIT
So, does this mean avoid it? Will I be pissed, or can it be viewed as real-life Team America? Because I feel like it might be like that. If not, I'll have to do this at the Redbox:
So tonight my sister-in-law and I went to a local place called Yestercades, a vintage arcade that's probably the closest I've got to a time machine. There's a LOT to do there, including a ton of consoles (a JAGUAR for fuck's sake!). Played some Dr. Mario and got my ass kicked, but my primary attachment was this:
And then got like Last Starfighter-absorbed into an obscure 90's "classic," which is just awesome and I wish someone could have the balls to make a movie like it:
Some of you (Erix at least) know my fondness for the 80's classic NARC, well this might as well be close up there in terms of how much I love it. Forgot how ridiculously violent this was.

Yeah, I gave up on the Von Bargen 911 tape about half way through. Thoroughly depressing. One of my favorite character actors, especially in Seinfeld and Malcolm in the Middle. Definitely one of those guys who I always smile when I see get work.

Guy had major range. Funny on Seinfeld, prickish in BASIC INSTINCT and SHAFT, and a believable SWAT team leader in SILENCE OF THE LAMBS.
Glad you got to play the DEMOLITION MAN pinball game, Hunter. Had one close to me at a Mountain Mike's pizza joint but the last time I was in there it was gone. Haven't been back since. Not a coincidence.

That's how I felt when a local restaurant got rid of their Battletoads machine, Molt. But I never ostracized them. Is Mountain Mike's Pizza good, or only good because they had John Spartan in pinball form?
By the way, just a block down the street in this area is where the Lethal Weapon 3 pinball machine I've played on a few occasions is located.

Now that my girlieness over Fichtner had subsided, I have to report that I listened to the entire 911 call. Made me so sad for Von Bargen. he's such an amazing character actor. I hope he can go past this and make more films. Poor guy.

Holy shit at the Verve Pipe-droppage Hunter. Love that horrendously depressing song. I liked Galaxy Quest, although him being dug up to direct RED 2 reaffirms what I've said of Willis, in my eyes. You can't find any other fucking directors to do the job?

Massive congratulations Plissken!
Wow, there's still a Demolition Man pinball machine? I haven't played it since like 1995.
Bruno's on his way out. He don't give a fuck anymore. There's so many other action guys who still care and want to work with the best talent possible.

Re: Bruce Willis. Yeah, I'm a DIE HARD super-fan like most everybody here, too. And I've defended him to friends through the low-times, the divorce... I even saw the man perform live in-concert back in 2002. But, why is Bruce doing practically direct-to-video movies? Granted, they might not have been intended as DTV, but still. "SETUP?" (This was totally under my radar until I saw it on the end-cap of a Wal-Mart.) "CATCH .44?" (With Academy Award Winner Forest Whitaker, no less?) Has anyone seen them and have anything good to say about them?
The guy's made some iffy/ill-advised/baffling choices in the past, sure (NORTH, PERFECT STRANGER, THE WHOLE TEN YARDS). But the just-plain-sad trailers for the above movies have given me even higher hopes for the upcoming G.I.JOE: RETALIATION. See, I'm that guy. I need Bruce on the big-screen cracking wise, getting angry and ripping the bad guys a new one. Sadly, this DIE HARD V (I refuse to call it by it's lame, given title) is sounding worse and worse... But yes, I'll be there opening day. Because I want to be wrong about it and find out it's good.
Know what I'd love to see? A low budget Bruce action thriller with no special effects. Just good writing and clever visuals. He needs a DRIVE or a HARRY BROWN right now. Something to show us he's still got it.

He also has LOOPER coming out this year, so he is capable of trying to work with directors who have a bit of vision. Problem with the DIE HARD franchise now is that Willis sees it as his Golden Goose. A well he can tap into every few years to prove that he's still a bankable action lead. This means he can't take any chances with them anymore. Which is how you end up with John Moore directing. This one is gonna hurt.

Totally agree with everything said here and I understand everyone's pain on this one. I may not go to Die Hard 5 though. I've seen both Set Up and Catch .44. I can't recommend either, but I didn't hate Set Up though. Got through it just fine. It had some funny moments, Bruce had some good parts in it and his 'not giving a fuck' was indictitive of his character. Catch .44 on the other hand was garbage, unless you like almost constant pointless swearing and stupid mexican standoffs that carry no weight. Bruce really tries really hard to play a quirky character in this one, but I just hated it and his role in it (it had mabye two good moments).
That sucks about Act of Jingoism. Guess I'll wait on that one. Oh well The Raid comes out next month!
Damn it Hunter why must you make me jealous with arcade stuff. I've got nothing around here. I'm gonna try searching for machines though.
Just finished up Last Man Standing (Wincott) and loved it! Another great pick Molti, and others who have given praise. I loved that his girlfriend was down to fight with him almost side by side the whole way, and that she wasn't scared to show her tits whenever.
Got The Hustler blu ray book delivered to me today, its one of my favorite movies of all time, had to order it because it was only 12 dollars on amazon.

On a positive note, just watched the trailer for Abel Ferrara's end of the world movie 4:44 Last Day On Earth. Looks pretty damn cool.. Appearently he's getting his best notices since Bad Lieutenant.

As Molt says, he also has Rian Johnson's Looper, which is one of my most anticipated movies of 2012.
I do hear stories about Bruce being a dick, but I always wonder. I mean, if the guy was really that much of an asshole, I feel like it would be tougher for him to get work, even if he is Bruce Willis. I imagine he's got an autopilot thing going, and he doesn't take much shit from people, but I also feel like people -- maybe this is only fans, and not so much professionals, but still -- have weird, unrealistic expectations of how celebrities are going to act sometimes. As for doing DTV shit, I mean, the movie industry isn't that great to aging actors and more and more cheap movies are being made...it just seems like a thing that happens.
In any case, even if I have not liked anything by John Moore, I do feel like people might be overreacting to a single photograph. I don't see anyone saying "I saw 'Spartacus' and this guy was shit," I see people saying, "I wanted to see someone more famous from something I already like playing the role, and this isn't that guy, so he must suck." I mean, where does that come from?
Also, Hunter: 1) I know you didn't like it, but seriously, in what world is Willis coasting more in Red than in Cop Out? I think the fact that he's not seething in Red is fucking up your perception of it. 2) I hope you're not trying to tell me Galaxy Quest is anything less than a great movie.
