Dragon Eyes will also be screening at action fest.

Although I think BATTLESHIP seems fucking stupid, I'm inclined to give it the benefit of the doubt. I like Peter Berg as a director. The first half of Hancock is pretty solid. And, for my money, The Kingdom is far superior to Syriana.

Michael Bay without cheese? I can believe that. Hopefully, he pulled off a fun summer spectacular. I'm willing to go there with my popcorn and all the intention of having a good time.

I have to admit, however, that none of the trailers have been too re-assuring. But I'll still be a good sport about this one.

Saw American Reunion and it was a pretty good time. The second film is still the best one, but this one was pretty damn good as well. Everybody's back whether as part of the main cast, or just in a cameo (and there's a few of those, but at least we get to see Shannon Elizabeth again.)

I always wondered what happened to Shannon Elizabeth? I guess her career stalled the way Megan Fox is doing right now.

Yeah, it seems she's been doing at least one movie a year, but it doesn't seem like she's been prolific and doing a lot of movies. Pretty sad as she is a lot better than Megan Fox. Better actress too.

It's not really a spoiler, but literally she has just one quick scene in American Reunion. So does Natasha Lyonne. The only one of those 3 to have a "prominent" role is Tara Reid, and she really only has about 3 or 4 scenes. It's a "the boys are back doing what they do" picture through and through.

Natasha Lyonne. I think she legitimately had a chance in becoming a great independent actress. Wouldn't really mind seeing her again.

Well, THE HUNGER GAMES is my favourite film of the year so far.

Also Blockbuster Films i am looking forward to.

1) THE AVENGERS

2) THE BOURNE LEGACY

3) THE AMAZING SPIDER MAN (For Emma Stone mostly)

4) SKYFALL

I think we're a little wary of TE2 since the PG-13 flap. Hopefully they'll be another trailer coming up later so we can reasses what we've got.

I read an interview with Natasha Lyonne where she's using this "comeback" to restart her career, and she genuinely seems to not want to piss it away this time.

She was great in Slums Of Beverly Hills and But I'm A Cheerleader. She's been doing stage work, but here's hoping she can get back to doing more films.

Don't look for that headshot in the US version. They cleaned that bit up to the point where I initially wondered what exactly happened. Good to know it was a proper splattering.

I know a guy who used to train with him and his crew back in the day.  He says Norris is incredibly nice and told me a story about the difference between him and Bill Wallace.  I guess Norris is the kind of guy who will stop mid-practice to help you train better and/or more efficiently, just very giving.  But one day Gene (that's the guy I know) was doing stretches, working his way to the splits, and Wallace comes by and just jumps on his back.  It forced Gene into the splits, but tore the muscle ligaments in his right leg, which was basically useless for three months after that.  Gene ended the story with, "Bill thought it was funny. Chuck never woulda done that."

You mean the 1984 version right?  Just giving ya shit.  But the remake wasn't too bad... but yeah, certainly not a classic.

But Jackie can safely go retire anytime now.  He was pumping out classics well before he hit it big the U.S.  He was pretty much past his prime by then.

Looks like Sigourney Weaver is stuck at playing shady Intelligence Operatives these days.

This is a little piece I wrote... keep in mind its a very rough draft... a first draft...

I call this ALIENS THANKSGIVING

----------------

In November of 2013, visionary director James Cameron edited together a new version of his 1986 classic “Aliens”. The film was converted into 3D, and pared down to a PG-13 rating to be enjoyed by families. When asked why this radical edit was done, Cameron replied, “Aliens has always been the story of a family unit that comes together in a disaster. Ripley the mother, Hicks the father, and Newt the daughter. Ever since the film came out I always felt that this movie about a family should be able to be enjoyed by families nationwide.”

In addition to the drastic recut of the film (in which all the characters survive)  and the added attraction of 3D, Cameron, at the cost of millions of dollars, reassembled the principal cast and crew of Aliens and filmed an epilogue that took place on Earth, after the events of the film. What follows is Cameron’s original short story that inspired the epilogue, written in 2009.

JAMES CAMERON’S

ALIENS:

THANKSGIVING EPILOGUE

By JAMES CAMERON

2179. EARTH.

Ellen Ripley sat on her couch and bit into a tasty slice of cheddar.

“Bishop, I swear you get better at cooking by the day! This cheese and cracker plate is not bad… for an android!”

Bishop smiled and continued to pour glasses of Merlot. “I prefer the term ‘artificial person’, myself.”

A smile crossed Ripley’s worn face.

“Right. I’m sorry Bish.”

With robotic precision, Bishop picked up multiple glasses of wine, all of them full, and carried them to the dining room. Ornately decorated with neon lights and other futuristic accoutrement, the dining room featured a beautiful dining table, able to sit many.  The artificial person, manufactured by the Weyland-Yutani corporation to serve mankind, did his company proud by setting down the wine and placemats for this special Thanksgiving meal.

“Hicks? Hicks, goddarnit, where the heck are you”, Ripley brusquely inquired.

“Don’t worry, I’m almost ready!”

Ripley’s jaw nearly hit the floor at the sight of what she saw. Hicks emerged from the master bedroom, resplendent in his navy blue dress suit. A tasteful bolo tie completed the classical ensemble.”

“So, what do you think”, Hicks asked with a playful smirk.

“I think I’m so glad that I will be marrying you in just 3 short months.”

The romance was a whirlwind of passion.  Once the U.S.S. Sulaco returned to Earth with her full complement of Colonial Marines, they all received a hero’s welcome. None celebrated more sensually than Ripley and Dwayne Hicks. As the Sulaco coasted in to Earth’s orbit, the entire planet rejoiced as the warriors of LV-426 returned home. Ripley, young Newt, and Hicks were awarded with a luxury condo in New San Francisco. Hudson, Vasquez, Gorman, and the rest of the brave marines were awarded handsome cash rewards of 5,000 dollars each. Bishop, the Hyperdyne systems 120A/2 model  droid, was awarded nothing. Androids did not share the same rights as human beings, and were not treated the same. To the rest of the world, Bishop was just another tool like a hammer or a wheat thresher. But Ripley and company knew different. Ripley took it upon herself to invite Bishop into their new home, serving as their butler. Bishop eagerly agreed and so they all moved in together. Soon after, Ripley proposed to Hicks. Hicks agreed with just one proviso- he wanted Bishop as the best man.

“Aw shucks, Ellen”, Hicks said through gritted teeth.  He was about to say something romantic but a loud, rumbling noise approached outside. BOMMM… BOMMM… BOMMM… Hicks recognized the bass of a top of the line stereo system when he heard it.

“That can only be one chica…”

Hicks ran to the door and met the woman getting out of her vintage lowrider automobile.

“Vasquez! You son of a bitch.”

The tough as nails latina tighted her red bandana and looked visibly uncomfortable in her black cocktail dress.

“Look mang. I only need to know one thing-“

Hicks’ ears perked up.

“WHERE’S THE FOOD”

Hicks erupted into good ol boy laughter.  “Come on in, the meals almost ready!”

“ANYTIME, ANYWHERE,” Vasquez rambled into the house, muttering swear words in English and Spanish to no one in particular.

“VASQUEZ! Its great to see you” Ripley cried as the fiery latina sauntered in.

“Snow White, hows it hanging, puta?”

Ripley was put off for a moment but then remembered her characteristic bad attitude and anger towards everyone. The same ol Vasquez! This made Ripley comfortable. Everyone’s heads turned to the sound of a door opening and out walked Newt, dressed all in black, her head staring down to the floor as she walked. She walked past Ripley and company, not making any eye contact. Ripley gently reached a hand out to her.

“Honey? Are you almost ready for din—“

Newt screeched so loud an overhead neon light fixture exploded.

“GET AWAY FROM ME!!!! DON’T TALK TO ME!!!! DON’T TOUCH ME!!!!” she ran back to her room.

“I guess some of us don’t get over things so easily hehe”, said Hicks with a wry smile as he sipped his Merlot. “Damn good wine, Bishop. Well who else are we waiting for then, I’m hungry as hell.”

Ripley thought for a second. “Just a couple more I think…” she was interrupted by a loud crash outside the condo, followed by raised voices arguing. “That can only be one person” she said mischeviously. “Lets go look!”

The motley crue of friends stepped outside and witnessed one hell of a fender bender. A beat up, sky blue Weyland Yutani hovercar had rear ended a beautiful, restored 2045 Honda Showboat hovercar. A nebbish man in a bland business suit emerged from the driver’s side, barking into a brick sized quantum-entanglement cellular phone.

“No, NO! I’ll have to call you back, some guy just made me crash into him. Yes I’m fine. No one signs anything until I get there. Don’t mess with me on this or you can start looking for a new job this holiday season.” He put away the phone without saying goodbye and walked over to the car that he had hit.

“What the hell is your problem? My cars totaled. I hope you have insurance.”

The gentle looking family man got out of his car and replied firmly, “yes I do. Let’s see yours. And you hit me, by the way, not vice versa.”

“Yeah.  Whatever. Great.” The smarmy businessman walked back to his car and retrieved his paperwork while the other man did the same. They met at the family man’s car and organized their paperwork on the spotless hood.

The family man furrowed his brow and cautiously said, “You DO know that this insurance expired last year?”

Burke exploded. “WHAT?! Bull! I DIDN’T KNOW”

Ripley stepped into the argument. “Umm Carter, I think its time to come inside. Let’s deal with this after Thanksgiving dinner, why don’t we? Bishop? Will you handle the valet parking?”

Bishop glumly bowed in submission. “Yes madam.” Bishop, clad in his classic blue jumpsuit and showing his unbelievable robotic strength, stepped over to Burke’s car, and picked it up with one hand, raising it over his head. He did the same thing with his other hand and the other man’s car. Then he walked down the street and put them down gently.  He went back inside the house, where everyone was rudely already eating appetizers, without waiting for him.

“Bish, there you are, boy! Come on and sit down!” Hicks’ cummerbund was already stained with food as he loudly chewed with his mouth open. Ripley ate daintily as a polite woman would, while Vasquez glared at her.  Burke tried to carve the turkey but failed. His wrists were just not strong enough. He was just a weasel. Eventually he gave up, asking, “Aren’t we waiting for one more—“ just as he was about to complete that question, a loud “HEY DUDES!!!” came from outside.  Dressed in swimming trunks and a cowboy hat, sans any kind of shirt, Bill Hudson stepped in through the door, carrying a keg under each arm. He threw a bag of marijuana onto the dinner table. “SMOKING OR NON SMOKING?”

After Newt was put back into Hypersleep because she couldn’t stop screaming, they finally all sat down to eat. Bishop was ordered to cut the turkey, and, like an obedient roboslave, he complied. Hudson got scared for a second when he saw Bishop at work with the carving knife. Hudson knew all too well of Bishop’s supreme knife skills. Bishop passed around portions to everyone and then politely asked to all,

“Would anyone care for some gravy for the potatoes or turkey?”

The survivors of LV426 were big time gravy fans, so they all said yes. Bishop flipped some kind of software switch within his programming and from his mouth and every orifice he began to spew gravy onto the dinner table.

“UUUUUUUUUUWWWWUUUGGGGGHHHHHHH!!!” he cried as the gravy erupted from his mouth like a volcano.

THE END

P.S- I admire your enthusiasm Gruber.

Yeah, that was pretty hilarious. Especially since I've started reading the Aliens novelization since yesterday.

Had a fabulous barbecue with my Parents, Grandparents, and Vanessa. Talked with my Dad about a lot of stuff. We started talking about The Expendables and The Expendables 2, and he hasn't seen the first one yet, so we're going to see it tonight so my Dad can see the awesome action of Barney Ross and co. versus the rogue Company man Monroe and his political stooge General Garza. Along with Gunnar, Mr. Church, and Bigger Trench Mauser.

Make sure the version they're seeing is the Director's Cut, Rene.

Unfortunately we'll only be able to see the theatrical cut as the Director's Cut (Agree it's the superior version) is only on Blu-ray and my folks don't have a Blu-ray player. Still, at least he's finally going to be able to see it.

I am hoping all of us B-Actioners will support LOCK OUT when it opens next weekend.

All the good stuff i've heard makes me think this'll be a DOOMSDAY style Cult Classic in the making.

I'm hoping that we can see Lock Out this weekend as well as Cabin In The Woods.

Rene, I vote we have a B-movie thread get together/cook out at your place.  It sounds like it would be a grand ole time.

Now outside of Gabe's glowing review a few weeks ago, have any geek centric sites put up any reviews for LOCKOUT?

I trust Gabe, but I am getting a little anxious about the lack of reviews for the flick.

i too am hoping to catch both CABIN and LOCKOUT this weekend.

Oh it definitely would be a grand ol' time, Fazer. We could cook up lots of beef and chicken, lots of tasty sides, and have a B-Action marathon along with a Q & A. Since we'll all be there, and none of us will ever DOUBLE CROSS THE ONES WE LOVE.

I'm seeing Lockout on Tuesday (with nooj in tow). Rene, stop seeing movies that aren't 21 Jump Street.

Yes, I also prefer Ms. Elizabeth to Megan Fox in just about every which way.

I am glad you enjoyed the film too, Rene.

Agreed. I recently mentioned how some members of the cast had a rough go of it the past 10 or so years. She definitely was one of the ones I was referring to. But thankfully both her and Tara Reid looked and acted fine in this movie.

I'm glad that Ms. Lyonne has been fine in recent years because she definitely had a drug habit and among other things, crashed her car onto a Miami Beach sidewalk and entered a neighbor's apartment and threatened to rape their dog! It's kind of hard to forget something like that, you know.

I can't say I ever heard of that before but now that I have... I am disappointed there's only a 3 minute clip of highlights from it, because Dear Christ!

The highlights include big hotshot Paul driving a Chrysler LeBaron convertible, Robert Loggia in the middle of shaving, and Richard Tyson (i.e. the bad guy from Kindergarten Cop) with a TREMENDOUS mullet. Given all the strange BS on the Internet I cannot believe I am not able to watch this glorious action in full.

Got back a little while ago from seeing The Expendables with my Dad, and as I knew, HE LOVED IT. That's not the best part though. The best part, and everyone here will enjoy it, was when Barney Ross gets captured and starts getting beat on by Gary Daniels. Well, as we saw that, my Dad out of the blue says "BENNETT JR." Then when Gary Daniels was fighting with Jet Li he called him "LITTLE BENNETT."

The mustache and the accent are more than likely what had him say that, and I just smiled and said "Yeah!" in the most happy way possible. Just another reason why my Dad rules so much. I nominate him as an honorary member of The B-Action Thread. I'm sure he'd love that.

I think each time I watch the movie, I'm going to think of him as Bennett Jr. from now on.

Lucky.

My dad's movie taste isn't refined, but he usually has a good standard for classier, more serious stuff. Then one day I showed him The Substitute, and at the end, he turned to me and was like, That was TERRIBLE!

I had to meekly say, Yeah, I know... why do I own that? I then hid from him my copy of The Substitute 3.

My Dad took me to see The Substitute when it came out. It's still a damn great action classic, and probably has the most silenced weapons in a movie ever.

Just checked up the theater listings for The Raid and saw that it's going to be shown this friday at a theater about 30 miles from where I live. I'm going to try to make it, whether it's with Vanessa or my buddy who I know will definitely enjoy it. Hopefully this weekend won't have a lot of other stuff that I'll have to get doing and I'll be free to see it. If not, I'll wait for it to make it over here.

Watching a bit of SUPERMAN (after earlier watching the very funny Roman Polanski film CARNAGE). I didn't as a kid, but now I absolutely love Hackman's Lex Luthor.

I can't believe I've never seen it before... currently watching Stallone's LOCKOUT. It's kinda... awesome? Stallone seems more into it here than he does in a lot of his other 80's films. And Tom Sizemore! Loving it so far.

It's certainly not a bad film. I like it a lot, and I know Hunter loathes it. Stallone is pretty awesome in it, and Sutherland is comically over the top as the villain. He really should have had a mustache to twirl. He was that cartoonish.

Just watched The Rock again and this may have been the first time it dawned on me that this features a stand-off between former Abyss rivals, Michael Biehn and Ed Harris, in significantly different roles. Just one of those things I felt like pointing out on an otherwise boring Easter Sunday.

Dog rape? Now that i want to see!

Maybe i'll catch American Reunion just for the hell of it. I'll certainly take Tara Reid, Shannon Elizabeth or Natasha Lyonne over Megan Fox anyday.

Never was on the Megan Fox bandwagon. That gal looks like pure trailer trash and not even Jennifer's Body could change my mind.

never thought i'd say this about a woman ever, but as long as Tara Reid keeps her clothes on she looks really really great...once they come off those scars are gruesome...

How bad are they?

Thanks Moltisanti, you are the best!

Watched two great movies this weekend on VoD, neither exactly B action, but you guys will love em anyway. Goon, which if you have a heart at all and you like watching people get punched you will love it. Next up was God Bless America, and all I can say is GOD BLESS BOBCAT GOLDTHWAIT, this movie speaks for me!

All members of this amazing thread should seek these two out asap and enjoy them thoroughly.

Rene you will love the theater scene in GBA just as much as I did, if not more. This scene should show in ever theater instead of their own lame "turn off your cellphone" promos.

And to anyone who doesn't like Seann William Scott, he does a fantastic heart felt and funny job in Goon. Also Joel Murray's performance in GBA is just perfect. Two of the best acting jobs I've seen so far this year.

Rene, I really hope you get to go see The Raid soon this weekend. I hope all my B action buddies get to see it soon.

Hope to catch Lockout this weekend!

Guy Pearce talks about LOCKOUT and if we'll get a sequel.

Man, this is looking good.

Pearce wants us to come out and support Lockout and by Buddha i think thats what we should all do,

To Erix: Sure, The Kingdom is better than Syriana, but Syriana was a load of crap. There are 3 other far superior Iraq/War On Terror movies: Hurt Locker, Body Of Lies, and Green Zone (way underrated). Body Of Lies in particular improved a lot with a Bluray viewing at home. Mid-level Ridley is still better than any other director on their best day, and it's full of awesome spy/intelligence stuff that I go nuts for.

The Kingdom felt like a solid 2-part TV pilot, underwhelming as a whole movie. And it had yet another version of the Foreign Buddy Cop story from Black Rain. It also would've gone up a few points in my estimation if they had the stones to behead Jason Bateman.

As for Lockout, it sounds like a lock for my Cheap Tuesday 6 dollar matinee bucks if the reviews are good.

Sinners And Saints is getting a sequel

Quote:
Director William Kaufman's SINNERS AND SAINTS was one of the best action films, and one of my personal favourites, of 2011. The first great news is that, as some of you already know, it will have its Domestic Premiere at the upcoming North Carolina's ActionFest , the 'manliest, muscliest film festival on the whole damn planet', with director Kaufman and stars Johnny Strong and Tom Berenger in attendance.

Now, Twitch has also got the exclusive scoop that SINNERS AND SAINTS 2 will be going into production this fall, with William Kaufman and Johnny Strong returning, and Chad and Evan Law (who worked with Kaufman on THE HIT LIST as screenwriters and ONE IN THE CHAMBER as associate producers) penning the screenplay. Director Kaufman has promised the sequel will have more exciting action than the original.

SINNERS AND SAINTS 2 is scheduled for a theatrical release some time next year.

I've been looking forward to God Bless America. Great to hear that it's the goods.

No solid promises on The Raid (I know I know, I should rush out immediately to see it this weekend, but who knows?) since Lockout is also arriving, as is Cabin In The Woods, and I'm HOPING I get to see those, as our theater viewing has been very sporadic these past few months, and I was surprised that we ended up seeing 2 movies this past weekend.

This. This is the main reason why I'm considering seeing Lockout instead. We want to see more Guy Pearce in action roles dammit!

I love Green Zone and Body Of Lies A LOT. I too like spy/intelligence stuff like that as well. I particularly like Mark Strong in Body Of Lies, and how he really slams home the fact that having friends in power and being able to trust each other is very important to surviving over there. Glad I blind bought the Blu-ray for it.

Well, it's not too difficult to find pictures of Tara Reid and her bad plastic surgery online, but I'll mention her not safe for work page on Awful Plastic Surgery as one example. This more safe for work page is another example. Not that I'd turn her down; I imagine she's be a blast to party with, if nothing else!

Concerning God Bless America, that's going to play at the Florida Film Festival, which is starting up in a few days. I'm seeing so damn movies already this month as it is (and I wanted to save up money as I spent more than I wanted to while I was down in South Florida recently; I guess that'll be put off until May) but that is something I could see on the big screen. That's the festival last year where I saw 13 Assassins and spent AN EVENING WITH EDWARD JAMES OLMOS. This year GBA is the only movie from there I'm interested in seeing and their special guest... Cloris Leachman. No offense to her but I'm not quite interested in that.

Back to the movies this month... there's a LOT of interesting things coming out in April (in my opinion) and unfortunately a lot of them are all coming out on Friday the 13th; I wish that Lockout would have stayed on 4/20.

Vern reviews ULTRAVIOLET.

William Fichtner in fangs! This movie has a weird Color Pastel look to it. As Vern says, there's some interesting ideas in this, but the excecution is pretty sloppy here.

Even the Gun Kata isn't very inspiring (Unlike in EQUILIBRIUM). Is Kurt Wimmer the only Director to employ Gun Kata? Because i can't remember another film that used that particular tool.

Got in the decidedly non-action movie Fatal Attraction. Unless you use the term "action" in another sense when regarding Douglas and Close as they get very......close. Only ever seen the end of the movie on cable a long time ago, and this was sent to me via Netflix's disc service so I said why not? I actually wanted Day Of The Jackal, but apparently I didn't add it properly to my list and they sent this movie, which just went back up on Instant.

Either way, this movie makes you never want to sleep with another woman that you're not already in a relationship with. She could be crazy!

I've been reading the Aliens novelization, and there's some interesting differences. Bishop doesn't do the "hand/knife" thing, Ripley notices he's an android...er, artificial person by a barcode on the back of his left hand. The Colonial Marine character Wierzbowski, whose role is very small in the finished film actually has quite a few lines and he serves as sort of a bodyguard for Ripley. She even grows fond of him and is sad when she discovers he's been killed. Bishop also is not involved in the scene when they discover the facehugger parasites in the medlab. I actually haven't read much of him to begin with. Very strange.

One nice little addition I wish was in the film was when Hudson is going insane when all hell breaks loose, and Apone gives him a spare rifle clip for his Pulse Gun. When he does, Hudson stops freaking out and starts acting heroic. Frost didn't get the clips here, Apone did.

Really enjoying reading it, and I'm blazing through it. Hopefully will be done with it by tomorrow, then I can start on Alien3 which is a very short book. I hope that doesn't mean it's just a flat out scene by scene take of the movie. I mean, I love Alien3. Both versions of it, but I'd love it if the book actually takes some of the "Workprint" cut and puts it in there.

The Gunkata is allegedly Wimmer's creation. You can see the beginnings of it in the Brian Bosworth vehicle One Man's Justice, which isn't a bad B action movie. Then in full on awesome mode in the great and underrated Equilibrium. Lastly, but hopefully not the last action film he makes, it's used in Ultraviolet, which is an okay popcorn mess of a film.

Syriana is a different film to the other 3.  It's a film about the games that are played over who has control of oil, shown from several different players' views.  I really enjoyed it, especially as it took a lot of guts to have a 'talky' film loaded with so many unlikeable characters.

Green Zone and Hurt Locker were good, but Body of Lies would a complete loss without Mark Strong.  That's was the film that really made me take notice of how good he was, wiped his ass with Dicaprio and Crowe's faces.

The Kingdom was merely OK for me.

Still no sign of a UK release for this one.  When was this filmed?  It must have been 2-3 years ago, what was the reason for the delay if the film actually had some merit?

Ultraviolet was a big ball of (Colourful) confusion.  I expecting bigger things from Wimmer. Equilibrium delivered action-wise, but was really shaky with creating a convincing plot and characters.   I was able to let it go and roll with the film.

The Gun-Kata was stolen wholesale for Ryuhei Kitamura's Ultimate Versus.  The newly added scenes made for a better film but stuck out like a sore thumb.  Hairstyles completely different, weight fluctuations and overall improvement in picture quality.

So I saw Dragon Eyes.  It didn't set my world on Fire, but it was OK.  The problems with the film come down to the script, Cung Le and possibly the budget.

First of John Hyams directs the film well.  Not once does the film look or feel cheap and the fights are great.  They are brief and there isn't as many as i'd like, but what's there is good.  He uses slow motion a bit too much for my liking, but you guys will see, there is a real feeling of impact in the fights.  There doesn't appear to be any CGI being used, so when strikes land there is (a little) blood and sweat and genuine 'crunch'.

Van Damme appears throughout very briefly.  The scenes which have Cung remembering him appear in fragments, so he doesn't really give a 'performance'.  A nice little bonus is a recollection by JCVD, that is a single, fluid 3 minute shot.  There is a bit of action in it, but it's one of the film highlights because it is well executed.

Cung Le's character is stoic and cold throughout the whole film.  This is a problem.  It's like the film-makers weren't confident enough to give him some heavy lifting.  There is the character's motivating sin, but this is shown in a way which made it unnecessary for him to have a big acting moment.  Who knows, maybe he did and wasn't able to make it work.  The film has an abrupt end, so I believe a sequel should allow for the character to loosen up a bit.

The plot is weak.  Blood and Bone did this story a lot better. Here, it's a miracle our lead isn't killed 10 times before the end.  Peter Weller is great fun and has bunch of cool scenes, but you wonder how he was able to gain such power when he is so useless.  A lot of things he does make no sense.  In fact, the same can be said of many actions by people in this.

Overall, I did enjoy the film, but it is by no means a home run.  Most importantly, it shows Hyams can deliver a film worth watching even when he is working with below par material.

I read it a long time ago when the film came out.  Back then it was the only way a 12 year old could 'watch' the film.

I can confirm that it does incorporate scenes from the 'workprint' version i.e. the actual shooting scipt.  I'm going to assume that the novelization was written before the theatrical version of the film was locked.

That's good to hear, Macready. I look forward to reading to it when I get to it this week.
