Got in from Amazon the Warner Archive THE SPLIT. Also, hit the video store and got FOUR BROTHERS and THE REPLACEMENT KILLERS (extended cut). HT and Eko will be happy to know, in the customer request section, was Eastwood's THE ROOKIE. So there's at least one other fan somewhere out there!

Not sure about that Macready.  Maybe some visual flairs were borrowed from VERSUS, but the idea of Gun-Kata and fleshing it out into an actual martial art (onscreen) and explaining why it exists beyond the idea of it just looks cool on camera is pure Wimmer.

Its funny, because I remember WAAAAAAAAAY back in the day on the CHUD boards when Kurt Wimmer would actually be a regular poster.  I still recall him telling us about a bet he made with Christian Bale after they wrapped EQUILIBRIUM that he was gonna be the new Batman.

EQUILIBRIUM was one of the more divisive movies being discussed on the boards at the time.  Unsurprisngly, Wimmer disappeared from the boards after ULTRAVIOLET hit theaters...I still can't forgive the man for that piece of shit.  I find almost zero redeeming qualities in it whatsoever.  Its such a backwards move in filmmaking from what he did with EQ its not even funny.

Happy to hear there's someone out there requesting that video store to get in The Rookie. Someone else out there has taste for the adventures of Nick Pulovski and David Ackerman.

So Wimmer was a poster here on the boards? Interesting. I love Equilibrium, but I still haven't seen Ultraviolet in it's entirety. Maybe I should check it out one day.

Nice to hear that SINNERS AND SAINTS is getting a sequel. Original was a satisfying bit of cop action.

Thanks for the DRAGON EYES review, Macready. My main worry I had for it was whether Le could carry the film. Sounds like he doesn't quite measure up but at least the fight scenes deliver.

Even the Gun Kata isn't very inspiring (Unlike in EQUILIBRIUM). Is Kurt Wimmer the only Director to employ Gun Kata? Because i can't remember another film that used that particular tool.

While the gunplay is similar to what we see in Versus, it's not the same thing.  I think it most resembles a sped up version of RoboCop's movements.

It seems my curse is improving.  Instead of buying them, I only had to add Missing In Action 1&2 and Delta Force to my Amazon cart to cause them to get upgraded to Blu.  I am all-powerful, KNEEL BEFORE YOUR MASTER!!!

Try to find out this guy's contact info. We could use another Team Rookie body around here. With Keith reappearing, you know hell's bound to break loose again sooner or later.

Remember: we've also got Erix, Kain, and many others on our side.

Yes. The Rookie fanclub is ever growing, and certainly not as small as one would think.

DVR ALERT: At 3:20 AM on Sony Movie Channel is the 80's "Men on a Mission" movie LET'S GET HARRY. Check out the cast: Busey, Duvall, Mark Harmon, Rick Rossovich, Glenn Frey, the hunk from 16 CANDLES, and Biff from BACK TO THE FUTURE. Directed by Stuart Rosenberg (COOL HAND LUKE, THE POPE OF GREENWICH VILLAGE) with an Alan Smithee credit, it's a mess, but in a Cannon Films kind of way.

Earlier I watched the doc BIGGIE & TUPAC by the insufferable KURT AND COURTNEY filmmaker Nick Broomfield. Allegations of involvement by corrupt cops in the murders remains most inflammatory aspect of subject. So crazy, plays like something out of a movie.

Right now: THE REPLACEMENT KILLERS with Chow Yun-Fat

Oh man, that movie. I've only seen clips of it; it was a few years ago. I was at a club near Orlando and they had TV's and for some reason they were playing that film. I can't explain why as they usually didn't do that thing. I can say that the combo of electronic music with a lot of bass fit the film rather well with all the strange images and loud colors. Once I watch the movie one of these years in a proper way I'm sure to be disappointed. And I'm sure I'll also be disappointed whenever I get around to seeing the similar Aeon Flux. I never watched the TV show but I'm sure the movie is as bad as I've heard from most reliable sources.

I've never seen that movie except for the trailer. It's 80's-riffic but a bald Duvall sometimes wearing a Yankees cap makes me laugh and laugh.

Wow, that Duvall is doing his best pimp Yul Brynner. I'm going to have to dig around for it. I'm also going to look for this gem:

I mean, it's got the guy who sang the Ghost Busters theme AND for some reason Jan-Michael Vincent. With Tony Todd as THE COUNT.

I dig that film.  It's definitely a lower-scale, bastardized Hollywood attempt to make a Woo movie but so were a lot of Woo's U.S. directorial efforts. Sorvino is cute in this one and the score worked for me. This and Romeo Must Die were the two films that brought to my attention how much the movie-going public apparently hated seeing Asian stars portrayed as romantic leads opposite anyone but fellow Asians. It wasn't until many years later through the magic of "special edition DVD" that I even learned there was another ending where Chow and Mira Sorvino actually kissed.

WORSHIP ME!!!

On a more serious note, count me in on Team Rookie.

Also, The Replacement Killers and The Corrupter are two favorites of mine.  They might not be on the same level as Chow Yun Fat's work with Woo, but they are still damn good action flicks and a fine start for his Stateside career.  It's a shame that he hasn't really made too much of note since then.

Was playing with the idea of driving down to Action Fest, but with the overall cost and the fact that a lot of those movies will be on VoD very soon, I don't know. If I do go though I'll try to keep a journal and sumbit it as news.

Watched Deathproof again, still awesome, especially Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Rosario Dawson.

Games of Thrones season 2 continues to be amazing, and full of nudity and sex.

Think I'll blind by Strike Back when it comes out on dvd.

I gotta totally agree with Kain here, that the Gunkata was most likely inspired by the movements of Peter Weller/Verhoeven's Robocop, but sped up and with two guns for Bale. There's also that part in The Crow where Brandon Lee shoots everyone at the table, but it's hard to see because of the strobe light. Someone should make a videogame where different button combinations make your character shoot in the different positions of the Gunkata. Like a Max Payne but in the Equilibrium universe, or like an updated Gunsmoke. (damn, I can't wait for max payne3!)

Don't know what else, you should all play Abobo's Big Adventure online. It's free and is a great homage to all things NES.

Ray Parker must've slipped that voiceover some serious cash for the amount of praise he was giving him.

I didn't think Aeon Flux was that bad. Charlize Theron looks good in a catsuit. Some nice set designs. Not really the abomination so many people make it out to be.

I agree, but I didn't watch the show. I also liked Green Zone quite a bit when I saw it at the dollar theater, but I never bothered with Body of Lies.

Oh my, I did forget how fast this thread moves.  Re:  Abduction, was that that movie with the Twilight guy, where nobody was actually abducted in any way, shape or form?  Yeah, I saw that.  I've been on a forced vacation, every weekend we viewed the new releases, but it was always light on the action fare unless it was a Fast and Furious or Transformers type movie.   Did see that Stone Cold movie, RECOIL, and wished it were better.  Kind of blah, but interesting things threatened to happen.  DRIVE might have been the best movie I saw the whole time I was locked up.  Or at least my favorite.  I have no idea what's going on with the new releases, shit in development.  I'm at a point where I see a preview and I'm like "oh shit, they finally made a GI JOE sequel, and Bruce Willis is in it?"  It's kind of awesome, really.

Thanks for the well wishes.

Anybody read the EMPIRE Magazine Lethal Weapon Reunion interview? With Mel, Danny Glover and Richard Donner.

I know it's probably a delicate question. But i was dissapointed that Mel didn't touch on his crazy shennanigans last year ("PACK OF NIGGERS"). Nice to see that he and Glover are still getting along fine.

No LETHAL WEAPON 5 please! Lets quit while we are ahead, fellas.

Maggie Grace talks on LOCK OUT and TAKEN 2.

Maggie Grace sure has come along way since LOST. Someone described her relationship with Guy Pearce as a "Han Solo/Princess Leia" type. And boy oh boy does that sound fun. LOCK OUT can't come sooner enough.

I'll still take a LETHAL WEAPON 5. Especially if Shane Black is involved, and it has some of the original's darkness.

Darkness? Maybe too late for that. Riggs was way too pussified by the end of LW4.

Agree that Shane Black coming back would be great though.

I agree that the Aeon Flux movie was not the 'end of the world' bad. It just wasn't what I wanted, and for how fucked up the show was an R rated movie would've been appropriate.

To all in the thread who haven't seen the original anime series though, I suggest you track it down eventually. I own the complete set that came out about seven years ago. The 'pick of the litter' are the original shorts in which Aeon doesn't speak, but some of the later episodes are great too. It's something that can be found for 10 bucks nowadays I'm sure. My friend just bought a UMD for PSP of it for 2.99 so...enjoy.

My favorite of the shorts from the collection would be the one which I think is called "War", where it just goes on and on for about 5 minutes from badass to badass, full of action. (that short also features the best music in the entire series, it has a great soundtrack)

I remember seeing those Aeon Flux shorts back in the day around 1993 and finding them to be strange, yet cool, and she always died. MTV has really fucked themselves in the ass now. Nowhere near as great as they once were.

No Fazer, I was saying that Versus was the thief.  Equilibrium came out between the release of the original and Ultimate cut and you could tell.

Are we not going to go easy on Wimmer for Ultraviolet?  The film was taken away from him, though I really couldn't say the film wouldn't have been equally as crappy.

The reunion wasn't much of an interview and the journalist was no doubt instructed to keep talk strictly on Lethal Weapon.  I don't recall the words 'Joel' and 'Silver' coming up, either.  We know that he is on Donner's shit list and Gibson's loyalty is to Donner.  No one can say for sure what transpired between Silver and Donner, it wasn't Silver trying to make LW5 with out him.  It was something that happened not long after LW4 was done. (I have scans if anyone is interested)

I agree, Lethal Weapon is done.  Any remake will fail because you can't manufacture what was created by this team.

I caught The Cold Light of Day and it's easily film of the year, so far.

Just kidding.  It was OK but nothing that will linger in the memory.  It's basically Frantic without a sense of humour and more action.  Maybe that is being kind. The script is pure standard.  It is generic to the point where it can end pretty quickly without there being many questions.  It's kindy crappy when you realise there are really just two villains in total.

Cavill does a good job as a physical actor but doesn't get much of a chance to do some real acting.  Willis is in paycheck mode (Surprised?) and Colm Meaney shows up for a scene.  Weaver easily is the most memorable in the film, though she doesn't make many evil faces.  Mechri fills the film with flourishes and keeps the film moving along quickly.  The film is never boring but he was working with something that's been done before.  In fact, this film does the same thing Unknown did.  How does a Plant Biologist/Business Consultant drive, run, fight like James Bond?  Unknown answered that satistfactorily, but here Cavill is pretty much an imbecile before shit gets real.  His business isn't assassinations, that's for sure.

Forgot to mention that I saw The Raid on Easter. I was scared it wouldn't live up to the hype at first...and then it got insane.

And more insane.

And a LOT more insane.

Without fear of being hissed at, I will call this the finest action movie period, barring genre hybrids or superheroes, since Face/Off. By the end of it, I was literally overwhelmed by how much action there was in there. When I walked out, I literally felt exhausted from watching it. At least a dozen moments where I exclaimed at or thought how fucking cool some part of it was; there's a rawness and grit that's so potent that I almost immediately forgave the shaky-cam (as it actually works here). I let out a pretty audible OH FUCK during the emergency surgery (you'll know what I mean).

Didn't get to any action movies over the weekend.  Friday and Saturday were PAX East days and Sunday/Monday were Home for Easter days.  But several DVDs showed up at my door. My 80's kick is back with a vengeance with VALLEY GIRL, GOTHAM, WEIRD SCIENCE, STAR CRASH, BATTLE BEYOND THE STARS, WISE GUYS and THE ICE PIRATES.  And not-80's but also cool: FUTURAMA: VOL.6, THE TREASURE OF THE SIERRA MADRE (2-disc) and the DVD from Stoklasa & Bauman at RED LETTER MEDIA.  Good times.

I've never actually seen STAR CRASH or BATTLE BEYOND THE STARS but I hear they're quintessential low budget 80's classics.  Looking forward to them big time.

Funny you mention Futurama, Engineer, as I finished watching Vol. 7 earlier. It's got some really funny stuff, bit some of it just isn't up to par with the initial Fox run or Bender's Big Score. Still, I'm not complaining, it's great to have the show still up and running.

Weird Science is of course a classic. If only to see Robert Downey Jr., Robert Rusler, and Anthony Michael Hall wearing BRAS ON THEIR HEADS, because their "Ceremonial."

Oh yeah, and when Kelly LeBrock says Anthony Michael Hall "tosses off" in the bathroom. Then his Mother reacts with "YOU TOLD ME YOU WERE COMBING YOUR HAIR!"

THE TREASURE OF THE SIERRA MADRE might just be my favorite Bogie. A brilliant film, and true classic masterpiece.

I'm a big fan of VALLEY GIRL. In my opinion, the underrated teen movie of the 80's.

As interesting as making a long road trip there would be, I don't know if it'd be worth the gas money and all the time it would take. I mean, I live like a few hundred mile round trip closer to Asheville than you do and I don't think I'd make the drive. But, if anyone does make it out there it'd be interesting to hear what the experience is like.

Yes, it's that film. It's been joked about a few times before but hardly anyone from the thread has actually seen the damn thing. No matter the reason for the absence it's nice to see you return.

Yeah, Kelly LeBrock made a lot of people comb their hair back in the day. Current day Kelly, not so much, but shit happens. To think that Seagal had his way with her and showed her his poppycock.

Such an odd list of directors for Cap 2, but I'm not paying attention much at this point.  9 times out of 10, Hollywood ends up hiring someone who was never on the list to begin with anyway.

To be honest, i don't care much on who directs CAP 2. With the exception of THOR and maybe THE AVENGERS, most of the Marvel films are solid but unremarkable pieces of entertainment for me. Don't get me wrong, i appreciate the effort they are making to link the films together. But none of the Marvel films have really impressed me so far.

Engineer, I thought The Ice Pirates was...Awesome!  There are alot of Robert Urich's films and series I did not care for.  The...2 that I enjoyed were...The Ice Pirates and seminal 70's cop show...S.W.A.T.!  S.W.A.T. The Final Season arrives on dvd May 22nd!  My favorite Cop Shows are as follows...

1) T.J. Hooker

2) Hunter (particularly the first...3 seasons, when Hunter and McCall battled with their Captain, and McCall was known as...The Brass Cupcake!  Season's 4-7, the action was softened, and they were best buddies with the Captain!  It was far less...Arresting!)

3) S.W.A.T.

4) Sledge Hammer

5) C.H.I.P.'s

6) Police Squad

PS, I also watched...Police Woman, The Rookies and The Mod Squad!

Yeah, it really worries me, fleed.

I am a big fan of the film and books. And i am just worried that Lionsgate will hire some by the numbers hack to handle the sequel. Jennifer Lawrence has to do X-Men: First Class 2 in Jan next year. So the pressure is on for the studio to find someone to quickly handle Catching Fire and who is good at his job at the same time. I really really hope Lionsgate takes their time to carefully consider their options and do right by the fans. Hopefully we'll get somebody of quality.

as for Wimmer...I'll be honest with you, unless the studio decided to re-shoot the action scenes I don't see how everything could be blamed on studio interference.  the action was just staged terribly and his shot selection was nonsense.  I put it all on Wimmer.

Arriving from Netflix today: the Hackman/Hyams team up NARROW MARGIN. I prefer the '52 original, but I like this one a lot, too. Top notch early 90's thriller, with, even if it's paycheck mode, an engrossing central performance from Hackman. Hoping the disc is one with commentary.
