wadew1, I have to say, The Raid, is no...Ong Bak 2 or 3!  Sure, there was alot of shooting and fighting in The Raid, but no one stood out.  The Hero Iko Uwais, was simply not...IKOnic Enough!  He even needed his brothers help in one of the fights.  Tony delivers some Bone...JAArring kicks and punches in the...ONG BAKtacular trilogy of...Martial Artistry!  Each of the...3 Ong Bak films made my...Top 10, in the year they arrived in the US.  The Raid, is a film I will definitely...Not See Again!  I am passing up...future sequels, as well as the hollywood remake.  Dredd on the other hand has...Karl delivering some...Urban Justice, in Mega City One!  I am...Thrilled that Judge Anderson is played by the lovely...Olivia Thirlby!  It is good that Rob Schneider is...Not in this new Judge Dredd film!

I thought THE RAID was better than the first ONG BAK and the crappy sequels. I liked the hand to hand fights more and it had more of a variety when it came to the action. The only thing ONG BAK has that THE RAID needed was a wisecracking guy named DIRTY BALLS.

Also saw CABIN IN THE WOODS.

I thought it was a pretty fun/clever horror movie send-up for the most part. The crazy third act is the best part.

Is the twist as great as surprising as everyone says it is? I'll be watching CABIN next week,

No, you pretty much know what's going on early.

Gents, add me to the growing list of THE CABIN IN THE WOODS acolytes.

I am a pretty levelheaded, yet unabashed Whedon-ite so take my words with a grain of salt (although I disliked DOLLHOUSE quite a bit)

But it pretty much destroyed the horror genre and then rebuilt it in its own image.

Really really really good stuff.

You definitely don't need to be a horror buff or fan at all to enjoy it.

I read somewhere else on the net that it played out like a big budget long form BUFFY episode just without BUFFY...which is pretty on point.

Thats interesting. I am staying away from SPOILERS but i heard that Cabin is a sort of satire/meta commentary on Horror flicks. Was a Josh Whedon fan since Buffy, so i can guess how the dialogue will be like.

Speaking of Olivia Thirlby from DREDD. Has anyone here seen THE DARKEST HOUR? Saw it recently and its really not as terrible as a lot of people say it is. I'll certainly take it over BATTLESHIP.

Felix, I agree with wade...you get a real sense for what's going on as the movie develops.  There isn't necessarily an "A HA!" moment where the twist gets shown off.  Its a slow burn that leads to such a satisfying third act.

I'm gonna come right out and say it -DROP ZONE sucks. I usually like a John Badham joint, but this one is just a dull bore. Snipes was alright, but Busey was embarrassing, and Michael Jeter has to be in the running for most annoying supporting player in an Action movie ever. Put me unabashedly on Team TERMINAL VELOCITY.

I know CABIN IN THE WOODS is great, and THE RAID is supposed to be awesome, but don't forget about THE THREE STOOGES, B folks. It's the movie thread legend Mel Gibson would want us to see.

The Three Stooges were all Jews (or "hebes" as mel lovingly refers to them apparently) so something tells me he isn't going to be an ardent supporter of the movie version...

At least when compared to this. Because i am really looking forward to THE RAID when it hits my shores next month

Fat Elvis, I agree, Street Fighter Starring...Sonny Chiba is...Awesome!  Did you ever see Sonny Chiba's Golgo 13?  It is on the...Kill Chiba Collection!  It is the live action version of the Anime Series!

nothing in THE RAID is as stylized and "Hong Kongy" as the SPECIAL FORCES clip you posted felix.

While everything that has come before has tried to emulate the GOLDEN HARVEST era Jackie Chan/Sammo Hung level of brilliance, what Gareth Evans and the Silat stunt crew are trying to do with THE RAID is bring a real world grit to the fights.  Sure there are a lot of stunts and what not,but you aren't gonna see a lot of flips and spinning kicks and what not for the sake of doing it.

Even the Tony Jaa/Pinkaew stuff from Thailand has tried to bring more of a brutality to the style of fights that Jackie and Sammo put on.

THE RAID, while owing a lot to those that came before, really stakes a new claim in the action world.

For me, it wasn't so much the twist itself but the extent of how gloriously far that twist was taken.  Above and beyond.

I like Four Brothers. Mark Wahlberg and Tyrese were pretty good doing most of the heavy lifting action-wise.. Last night, I revisited the Jason Patric/ Ray Liotta movie Narc. A damn good cop drama, imo.

Also, I finally caught THE RAID: REDEMPTION this afternoon.  While it didn't reinvent action cinema for me and I don't think it's the best thing since DIE HARD or John Woo, I dug it.  This has probably been said before, but I hold it in the same regard as CHOCOLATE, BORN TO FIGHT, ONG BAK and TOM YUM GOONG/THE PROTECTOR in that they're all well-crafted action flicks with super-impressive physical performances that need a little boost in the character and storyline department.

That said, THE RAID: REDEMPTION does have more writing going on than the others above with it's more interesting multiple characters and their goals.  It's raised the bar for this new breed of world action cinema.  If there are going to be two sequels rounding out a RAID TRILOGY, I can definitely say I look forward to them.  It should be a blast seeing the budgets rise and the actors getting more chances to show what they can do performance-wise.

Well-recommended...  Good weekend at the movies, innit?

Ooooh, NARC.  One of Liotta's best.  His character's right up there with Nolte in Q&A for me.  That moment in the opening when that bystander is shot in the throat...  That gurgling scream is one of the most terrifying sounds I've ever heard.  In a film or otherwise.

So we went to see The Raid, and I have to agree that it's a damn great action movie. As far as crazy stunts and martial arts, I put it up there with the aforementioned Tom Yum Goong/The Protector, but I'm pretty sure I enjoyed The Raid more. I love the Carpenter-esque soundtrack, and I definitely will be buying it.

felix, the fight is as spectacular as you've heard. It will not disappoint you.

I found it pretty funny as it was only Vanessa and I along with 4 other guys. She was the sole girl there. She of course enjoyed it and winced several times at the brutal violence, and we both were surprised by a shocking development towards the end that is certainly a set up for the further 2 films.

We didn't get to see Lockout as that and any of the other ones we were interested in seeing didn't start until later, and we both were hungry, so we left.

Got in the Blu-ray of Thou Shalt Not Kill...Except in the mail. Watching it now. I've never seen it before, but so far it's a decent exercise in do it yourself filmmaking.

Wasn't it on Instant for a while? I might have to blind buy it. I've heard good/crazy things. Bruce Campbell & Sam Raimi are in it, that's kind of fun.

Still amped for Lockout next week.

On another site I frequent, an American guy in Thailand saw the film Friday night and he didn't really like it either. However, he did comment that no one in the movie stated anything to the effect of "You've sunk my battleship!" Honestly, with that kind of property you almost expect someone to make that quote so of course it doesn't happen.

Ha. I can't say I'm too interested in checking out that Jones/Cedric the Entertainer joint even if it has some hot chicks in it, like Paula Garces and Monica Keena... and also R. Lee Ermey. It reminds me that late Friday night TBS showed an edited version of Black Dynamite (Lord knows how that is) and then Code Name: The Cleaner, another film with Cedric the Entertainer I can't imagine ever watching.

I was wondering myself when the big day was. I imagine you picked out the day at random rather than deciding on that particular day so you and your gal can get married then you can go straight to the local cineplex to see the film with you in your tux and your gal in her wedding dress.

lol just kidding that shit  was fuckin craaaaazyyy

It's almost literally NON-STOP INTENSE VIOLENCE. Everyone in the building is either a cop, a machete-wielding psycho hopped up on drugs or some kind of martial arts marathon runner. They all keep going and going and punching and kicking and stabbing and shooting. The upcoming Judge Dredd movie named DREDD (it has almost the exact same premise) is pretty much fucked!

p.s. I hope Malaysian Al Leong comes back for the sequel.

YES. Friday afternoon I saw the movie in my home town and it was awesome but there was only one other person in the auditorium so I lost out on crowd reactions. That's why I went out to downtown Orlando tonight to see the movie again and this time there were about a dozen young dudes who were there (i.e the type of dudes I expected there) and they marked out often for all the crazy shit they saw. It was great seeing it with people who went nuts for it.

I agree that Indonesian Al Leong was the best character in the film as he was so awesome.

True. I find it funny that Mel is a fan of the Stooges given his apparent usual opinion of Jews. Me, after seeing all the trailers it looks like the movie will mostly be the classic gags they did way back when and not so much the newer gags and shit like that tan goblin Snooki getting poked in the eyes. Still, I eye it suspiciously as I don't blow my load over the Farelly Brothers like others do.

Ahhh yes, the original The Streetfighter, with the great motherfucker known as Sonny Chiba. I've seen that before and it's great. Of course the one thing I remember the most is that he rips some dude's dick/nutsuck right off with his bare hands.

Yes it is. You should love Indonesian Al Leong against those two dudes like everyone else does.

Me, tonight I went to downtown Orlando tonight to see Raid again and while watching that I was able to drink a Yuengling (that was the best of what they had; no Pabst, unfortunately); after that I went to a nightclub I've mentioned before (Mako's) that has the female employees wearing their bras and panties-pretty much-and it's a party joint; while I was there I had some random asshole stare at me and start shit with me (someone working there saw it and kicked the guy out for being an asshole; I wish I had Iko Uwais skills so I could have beat the fuck out of him myself but I don't so I was happy with that druggie-looking guy being kicked out), me talking to a guy named Austin who was fine but he got in the way of me macking on a HOT brunette who put a Potato in my Pants, and me talking to a guy who never told me his name but he was wasted and paid for some of my booze and paid to have a hot brunette working there shake her ass & titties in my face and gave me a shot (that usually costs 15 bucks). Yeah, because of other people I had a more fun time at that joint than usual; if only I could have talked more to that smoking hot babe...

Perfect, you continue to have evenings that sound really amazing. That's awesome, man.

She picked the wedding date out of the blue, and I was like "That's when Prometheus comes out......" and of course she was all "I don't care, I'm not changing the date again!" so that's how it is. Not that I mind, I may go see a midnight show the night before, or later that evening, or even saturday, as she was saying we could just see it the next day.

After seeing The Raid earlier, it prompted me to finally finish Modern Warfare 3, and I just finished it a little while ago. Loved how everything played out in the end, and of course it's full of great action. I may next play either Dead Island or Batman: Arkham City. Don't know which one I'm in the mood for yet, so I popped on Gorky Park to see Lee Marvin and William Hurt square off while James Horner Commando-esque music plays.

Congratulations, Rene!

You might want to catch Prometheus in IMAX though. I've a feeling it would be a visual blast to watch.

P.S- I wonder if audiences watching the trailer know its an Alien prequel? Or maybe its only us that picked it up? I guess we'll soon see.

I love the Call of Duty games. They play out like 80's action movies given James Cameron sized budgets. I generally could care less about multiplayer though, so that's maybe why.

Thanks, felix! I'd assume that most people just see it as a cool looking sci-fi movie, and we're the only ones picking up on the fact that it's an Alien prequel.

That trailer was pretty cool, and even more so by having scenes from movies that are basically straight out of the game itself. I'm not one for multiplayer or online play either. I think those of us that grew up just being happy to play games on the console are used to that. Not all of course, but just some of us. It seems that multiplayer/online is a big selling point for younger kids, but I just don't see the point in it, unless some of my B-Action Thread brethren would want to do some online play, to which I wouldn't mind doing that. I mean the last time I did any online play was with my cousin when we both had just gotten the Ghostbusters game in June 2009. That's the first and last time I did online play, thus far anyway.

I agree that Terminal Velocity is the better movie. But I do enjoy Drop Zone's ending. I like Busey's hilariously staged death scene (which my friend and I rewound like 15 times when watching the movie on video back in '94) mostly for how white and shiny his gigantic teeth look when he's screaming. And the fact that he strikes a Rocketeer pose.

I'm surprised that Stooges is getting good reviews. I'll probably watch it. But I really would have been excited when it was Jim Carrey, Sean Penn and Benicio del Toro. That would have been genuinely interesting to see.

Brosef Stalins...I come bearing bad news.

I echo Molt's short commentary on LOCKOUT.

It is a piece of garbage.  The opening really had me amped and excited until they got to the atrocious motorcycle race and its sub playstation 2 level CGI.

Things calmed down a bit once they got Snow onto the space prison but that became the biggest issue...NOTHING HAPPENED.  There was little to no real action sequences in the film.

And frankly, I think Guy Pearce should be commended for his approach to the character, but the script made EVERYTHING he said a one liner or throwaway comeback...thats not how the films of yesteryear handled their protagonists.

The duo of James Mather/St. Leger do not have a good future ahead of them.

Really really disappointing flick.

Thank God I saw THE CABIN IN THE WOODS this weekend too.

Here's what somewhat who saw the footage described.

"Alright. Saw first 10 minutes and have to say from just that footage it reminds me of a horror movie shot in 1st person perspective. You, the audience, are looking out of Adkin's character's eyes and experiencing everything. With that said, not much was show except what happens to Scott's character's wife and daughter at the hands of a group of masked intruders which the daughter eerily wakes her dad to tell him she hears "monsters" downstairs. When he goes to investigate he witnesses something brutal and the leader of the masked men kneels looking straight at you, the audience and takes the mask off and it is Luc.

I was actually very surprised that The Raid hit down here this weekend, as even though it's a "wide release", not all the first run theaters got it. It was certainly a pleasant surprise to discover that it was coming here. I was already thinking it would never go wide and just be a select theater, then straight to VOD and disc type of release. Now I can only hope that US4 gets the same treatment and at least comes within a reasonable driving distance.

"Indonesian Al Leong" is a pretty apt description of him. I knew he was reminding me of someone.

Forgot to mention that yesterday I went to Wal-Mart and picked up Dances With Wolves and the Godzilla remake on Blu-ray. It's been years since I've seen Dances With Wolves, so I'm looking forward to seeing it again and BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR NOMINEE GRAHAM GREENE, aka FAT INDIAN COP.

Saw a REALLY boring movie called Eye Of The Needle that starred Donald Sutherland and was the last movie directed by Richard Marquand before he "directed" Return Of The Jedi. I only saw it because it was part of the double feature with the infinitely better Gorky Park.

Now I'm watching the first episode of Justified: Season 2. Loved the first season, and this one is already shaping up to be great.

Everybody knows Arnie rules in TOTAL RECALL, and Michael Ironside gets much thread love, but I'd like to give a shout out to the movie's secret weapon- Ronny Cox. I love how exasperated he gets at Quaid refusal to re-become Hauser.

Vilos Cohaagen: Don't touch that! Get away! Get back!
Douglas Quaid: What are you afraid of? Turn it on.
Cohaagen: Impossible! Once the reaction starts, it'll spread to all the terbinium in the planet. Mars will go into global meltdown. That's why the aliens never turned it on.
Quaid: And you expect me to believe you?
Cohaagen: Who gives a shit what you believe? In thirty seconds you'll be dead and I'll [shows detonator] blow this place up and be home in time for Corn Flakes. [Shoots several inches near Quaid] I didn't want it to end this way, I wanted Hauser back, but no, you had to be Quaid!
Quaid: I am Quaid.
Cohaagen: You're nothing! You're nobody! You're a stupid dream! Well, all dreams come to an end.

Dewey: E-what?

Plus I low how he and Boyd always refers to him as Dewey Crowe.

Oh, thank you very much. Those sorts of nights only happen once in a blue moon, really. I'm no Jeremy Piven.

Usually I feel that I'm rather boring. As wacky as that club can be, I've never had some weird guy come up to my face and stare like he wanted to rumble with me. I walked away rather than telling him to fuck off or anything of that sort. I still had a good time overall... and I'm glad that when I posted here last night I didn't say anything too dumb due to my BAC. But yeah it was a good night when some random stranger did some drunken spending and because of that I got some shots for free. That hot woman, she looked so nice that while I was disappointed to see her pull out a cigarette and smoke it (as it's usually a deal-breaker for me) I still would have...

Yeah, I agree with all of that. What a disappointment. Like I said, though, The Raid: Redemption more than made up for that. It's a shame that only a small amount of people will end up seeing that on the big screen.

I'm about to watch BLADE RUNNER: THE FINAL CUT, but I really wish I was watching the Theatrical.

I'm a fan of both the old Director's Cut (first way I ever saw Blade Runner, and first widescreen vhs I saw. I still remember the black bars bothering me for the duration of the film, but I was about 10.), and The Final Cut. The theatrical cut is a nice oddity. Plus you can't go wrong with Ford's "I don't give a shit." narration.

I haven't been to a club in years. The closest was a bar in a motel that we would go to infrequently that had a DJ who would play a lot of music. That was cool. They made a decent Salty Dog.

Are Gabe T and I really the only ones around here who enjoyed Lockout?

This isn't aimed at anyone in particular, just cinephiles as a whole:  Was everyone expecting the second coming of Escape From New York with this?  If so, no wonder everyone was disappointed.  All I wanted out of Lockout was a fun B-movie and that's exactly what I got.  While it was obviously edited down from an R, I still found it very entertaining and I'd love to see further adventures with Snow.

I guess you can chalk this up alongside From Paris With Love and Colombiana as another Besson-produced flick that I loved, but everyone else seems to hate.

Glad to here that it's just as good the second time 'round.  I can't wait to catch it at the end of the month.

Also, as for Statham being the modern day Bronson?  I was thinking the exact same thing yesterday.  The man has found a niche and is playing it to the hilt, just like ole Charles did back in the day.

I forgave Burke as soon as I saw Dust Devil.

Save Lock-Out for blu-ray and see 21 Jump Street!

BOO!  It seems I'll continue to remain in the minority on Ghost Rider 2 as well.

What did you think of Cage as THE RIDER?

They don't seem to have a clue, which is exactly the way Ridley wants it.

I would have settled for the second coming of ESCAPE FROM L.A. Ended up with even less.

While the editing is bad, it is far from the film's biggest problem. There isn't one memorable set piece throughout LOCKOUT. Not one. As for Pearce I like a sarcastic anti-hero as much as the next guy but when every single line uttered by a character has the same "Look at me, I don't care. Isn't that cool?" cadence it gets so old so fast. You gotta ration that shit out. It's way more effective that way.

Just back from shooting new Kathryn Bigelow movie, what an amazing experience!

Boyka vs. Bin Laden.

According to the bloke who runs his fan site, it's a decent sized role.

I liked it, but the PG-13 killed my enthusiasm every time it really started to ramp up. It's no classic -- certainly not within a mile of Taken -- but the editing is my only serious complaint.
