Some of them are pretty bad and occasionally really offensive... but the ones that get it right are so wild, funny and even well made that I often wish Hollywood were doing things this bizarre.

Too crazy for me.  But I will be looking for more of them until I can really get a handle on what it is I'm watching.  I've honestly never heard of these.

Movie number three was Brian Trenchard-Smith’s THE MAN FROM HONG KONG, which memorably begins with Jigsaw’s super-catchy “Sky High” playing over some incredible paragliding footage. Maybe it’s me, but I planned for the long haul, knowing this was going to be a seven movie marathon, so I specifically tried to not worry myself following any plots that got too busy. Hence, I really am not sure what was happening here, but the movie was so much goddamned fun that you get a general idea of who the good and bad guys are, and when action was going to happen (always).

This is one of my favorite action movies.  Jimmy Wang Yu is awesome as usual and Lazenby gets to prove he really should have been more of a headliner post-Bond.  Glad you enjoyed it.

"TAFs has confirmation from the European Lionsgate distributor that the #Expendables 2 trailer will be ONLINE May 4th."

Macready, Vent Some...FURY!  I...Like it!  Also, I did not mean you in general in discussing excitement through sexual or toilet terms.  I was just...curious!

Engineer, I am not technical enough to understand what that is you are describing.  I have...Played, videogames since the era of...Intellivision aka Intelligent Television, Atari 2600, which I had, and got to play Colecovision at a friends as well.  My all time favorite...Series of games...Was, Contra, til the 90's arrival of...METAL SLUG!  I have the Metal Slug Anthology on the Wii, but sadly, the anthology does not utilize analog control.  I still wholeheartedly recommend...METAL SLUG 6, as it features the 2 leads from the 80's Classic...Ikari Warriors!

About the GMOD videos, you mean?  I don't know how to make them, but I'm fascinated by them.  The concept is: there's a program called G-MOD (also called GARRY'S MOD) that allows the user creative access through Valve/Steam (the PC gaming service that offers TEAM FORTRESS 2, for example) to modify the video, design and sound files of almost whatever game characters they like.  More adventurous users take these files and create their own short films with them.  They create original stories, add music, sound effects... whatever their creativity allows.  More info:   http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Garry's_Mod  There are literally hundreds of these videos on YouTube and some of them are really well made.

A lot of the fun, for me, comes from seeing what they do with character.  Example: the game TEAM FORTRESS 2 has a handful of military-based characters like "Heavy Weapons Guy," "The Medic," "The Scout" and such.  And by modding the files creatively, one user took a typical "Soldier" character and created a bizarre horror comedy character called "Painis Cupcake" -- a marauding, unstoppable killing machine who "will eat you."

There are some that go really heavy into the world of the bizarre and non-sequitur humor that I've always been a fan of.  Some are just dirty, which is pretty funny too.  And some are just wacky as hell...

I think what fascinates me most is that for those interested, it's both a great tool for learning the tech of coding and design as well as storytelling.  Also: it's like having a computer animation studio at your fingertips and being able to make quality films without the need for millions of dollars and an army of people working at once.  If I had the time and the wherewithall, I'd probably be learning how to do this too.  But for now, I'm happy with just watching them and digging them.

For more info: hit up youtube and search for the following users:  kitty0706, rubberfruit, DasBoSchitt & rhapsidious

Their stuff tends to be amongst the most well made and the craziest.  Like so...  (NOT SAFE FOR WORK!)

DTV Action Items: An Interview with Outlaw Vern

http://moviemorlocks.com/2012/05/01/dtv-action-items-part-1-an-interview-with-outlaw-vern/

I've grown to implicitly trust Vern's take on Action films. The man knows his stuff. I especially like his emphasis that a clear visual style is paramount for a successful Martial Arts sequence.

After the playoffs tonite, I'm watching the Glenn Ford crime thriller RANSOM!. I like the Mel Gibson remake, but I don't think I've ever gotten around to the original. <It should be great because it has an exclamation point in the title>

Nice!  And have you seen Akira Kurosawa's HIGH AND LOW?  A great modern crime film alongside THE BAD SLEEP WELL and STRAY DOG.  Then again, AK never really made a bad movie.  :)

Respect Jack "King" Kirby!

http://badassdigest.com/2012/05/01/badass-hall-of-fame-jack-kirby/

Amongst all the hoopla over THE AVENGERS, nice to read a tribute to the artist who started it all. His Silver Age work with Stan Lee, really was some Lennon/McCartney level genius. As Devin said, Kirby didn't invent the Super Hero, but he perfected it.

Put up a piece on the main page about one of my favorite actresses (and of course she's really good lookin') who is returning in MACHETE KILLS. They also reveal that Melvin's name in the film is LUTHER VOZ.

Finished up the Messiah Of Evil movie. It was damn creepy, and a really great movie that is worth seeking out. Also of note, and I barely found this out by seeing an interview special feature on the disc, but the man who shows up at the beginning of the film and gets killed, is none other than action film director WALTER HILL!

Great movie, spooky as hell. Hard to believe that the director (and his wife, who collaborated on the script) were later responsible for Howard the Duck.

Terry Crews is hilarious.  And it looks like The ArnoldFans were off by a day.

Caught up on a few movies this past weekend.  On the action front Statham's MECHANIC.  Small nitpicks aside (was Foster's character military trained?  Was the weapons training montage also to imply that he learned such tricks as scaling buildings?), it was a serviceable vehicle, but still utterly forgettable.  Kind of a copout in the end on the original.  One of those flicks that makes me wonder whether I actually do like modern action movies, as all the ingredients were there, but I felt nothing.  Charles Bronson, your legacy is secure.

One thing that was refreshing about MECHANIC is that is was free of wink wink, which was all over DRIVE ANGRY.  I've already talked to a few people that love this thing, or at least have a fond relationship with, but again, not much doing it for me.  I watched this and the Mechanic back to back, and I would like to give the upper edge to the Mechanic for at least having the nerve to present a story that wasn't just trying to kitsch it up and be a drive in throwback, but then I remembered that the Mechanic was a remake, so I'm back to square one and hating modern genre filmmaking.  At least for a few days, until I see something that inspires me again.

So, in honor of my absence- Holy Shit, you guys went and started a CHUD column while I was gone, and the ego in me wants to remind that HunterTarantino called me "MIA Thread Legend"- please recommend some action fare that I may have missed, especially if there's some DTV that was on the caliber of BLOOD AND BONE.  Yeah, I've been out of the loop for a while.

I'm still a little pissed that I wasn't around to contribute to the column on Cynthia Rothrock, but if that B movie column ever needs to hear my dissertation on INVASION USA, let me know.

Oh yeah, saw HAYWIRE last night.  Wish I shared Elvis' enthusiasm.   Liked the marriage of The Limey to every DTV the company has turned on you plot ever, but it didn't resonate with me.

Bah, I'm not that guy, the guy who hates everything.  Wow me, cinema, wow me.

Don't worry Keith about having unpopular opinions, as I certainly have some and many of the regulars here do too. Out of the movies you mentioned I've only seen Drive Angry and I did enjoy that, even though of course it was the opposite of subtle and if you prefer things to not be trying so hard then I can understand why it'd be a turn-off. As for the CHUD weekly column it was started the beginning of last year and was weekly for a few months but now it only appears once in a great while. I'm sure the people in charge would let you write about anything.

As for preferring the action movies of old, nothing wrong with that. I sometimes feel the same way myself.

I didn't have the time to mention it last night but yesterday evening I went to DisneyQuest, the giant arcade they have at Walt Disney World. Not too much was different but there's some new pinball tables. Sad to say the Batman table they have that's based on The Dark Knight has been used so much it doesn't play that well anymore; you know, when you hit the ball with the flippers it doesn't go up that high due to said flippers being in poor shape. That was disappointing, to say the least. But, the new tables they had were Tron: Legacy, The Rolling Stones, and Iron Man, actually based on the second film so I got to look at Whiplash while playing it. As long as you can put up with the sometimes annoying people there it's a lot of fun at DisneyQuest. They have a lot of machines, mainly older ones that you might have played in your younger days.

Oh, and wow to what dude posted in spoiler form. I didn't realize the movie was going to have that much humor to it, but from what I could make out, I hope it's as good as it looks... as long as it's R.

Keith F,  It is good to see you...Return!  I just saw...Safe!  Forget Statham's Mechanic, as well as his last film, which I did enjoy!  Safe has more...KILLER, and is far more...ELITE, than the battle of the Stars of...Shoot To Kill VS Crank!

The boon of DTV classics we got in 09-10 sorta fizzled out starting in 2011. One from earlier this year you should track down is SINNERS AND SAINTS. Quality cop action in that one.

Wasn't DTV, but in terms of recent under the radar action flicks you must check out 13 ASSASSINS.

With ya all the way on HAYWIRE. I just didn't see what everyone else seems to have seen. It's basically one cool fight scene and a lot of recognizable actors who do nothing.

Yeah, 13 Assassins is great. Big budget chambara will always have a place in my heart, especially if it's directed by Miike Takashi.

The whole film is great, but those last 45 minutes. So relentless.

Alright, I'll cop to it. I watched the non-sanctioned EX2 trailer. Wowwy wowwy wow.

Right on, I noticed that 13 Assassins is on Netflix.  I'll have to track down the SINNERS AND SAINTS.

I'm trying to not get caught up in EXPENDABLES 2 mania, but dammit, Chuck Norris.   I'm sold.

On a sadder note, something that caught up to me while I was locked up:  Bruce Willis appearing in shitty DTV movies.  I know he's been churning out shitty theatrical movies for years, ala SURROGATES, but seeing him slum it up in that 50 Cent piece of shit and that 20 years too late Tarantino ripoff that I can't think of the name, the one with Malin Akerman and Forrest Whitaker, oh my.

The good thing about this is that Bruce just works a lot -- I don't think it's an example of his star dropping or anything. He's got another Die Hard and another Red coming, so he can probably afford shooting one week on some cheapie in a garage in Jersey or something.

I do feel bad for any Bruce competists, though.

In Harry's DVD column he spotlighted a Billy Dee Williams movie I'd never heard of -HIT! (another title with an exclamation point, gotta kick ass). In the movie Billy D. plays a Federal Agent assembling a team of badasses (and Richard Pryor) that don't know each other for a specific hit(!). Harry namedrops THE AVENGERS, and calls Billy D.'s character Nick Fury-esque. That sounds pretty awesome, and with a MALONE-ish Blu-Ray cover, with Billy D. looking cool holding a rocket launcher, I think I'm sold.

High and Low is fucking great.  Saw it in '09.  Just perfect.

I forgot about HIT.  One of those I saw as such a young fella, been looking for it to pop up somewhere ever since.

Yeah, I saw that "spoiler" as well. FRIGGIN' FABULOUS. Prometheus now has something in the running for movie of the year for me. Oh who am I kidding? That movie was always in the running for movie of the year for me ever since it was announced.

Another DVD release I'm thinking about picking up: Roger Corman's THE NURSES collection. A four movie disc including CANDY STRIPE NURSES, NIGHT CALL NURSES, PRIVATE DUTY NURSES, & THE YOUNG NURSES. Glorious sexy exploitation fun (I remember sneaking late night cable showings of a few of 'em as a kid).

Never seen 'em, but the trailers for them seem to make them worth a look, and I think they're reasonably priced on Amazon.

Speaking of Corman, I want to get that Sword And Sorcery collection, along with the Women In Cages Blu-ray set. Just waiting for that Blu-ray set to hit 20 bucks or less.

Yep, and I was lucky enough to see that on the big screen, as I've mentioned many times before. That was pretty rad, even if some people there were stupid and actually said they didn't care for it.

Oh, you're so lucky you weren't around a few months ago when everyone was mad at CHUCKIE as he was the guy who was blamed for the movie for a few months looking to get a PG-13 rating.

And yeah in the past we've talked about how Bruce seems to love to work now so that's why he sometimes appears in utter shite like Catch .44... and also apparently some comedy coming out later this month called Lay the Favorite where he plays someone named DINK HEIMOWITZ. Poor Bruce.

That film sounds cool, although when I looked it up and saw that not only was it over 2 hours long but that it was directed by Sidney J. Furie... it gave me pause. But, hopefully it's as good as it sounds.

Welcome back, Keith!

I think i liked THE MECHANIC remake more than DRIVE ANGRY. There's some solid action stuff in THE MECHANIC (Especially the Ben Foster fight). DRIVE ANGRY has the gorgeous Amber Heard of course. But it didn't connect with me as well for some reason.

This made me recall an article concerning Eric Roberts recently.

According to Imdb, Eric Roberts has over 40 upcoming projects in pre-production in 2012/2013. Any bets he'll earn more money than Julia this year?

Well, hopefully you guys are checking out Safe.  I was fairly lukewarm about The Mechanic but I chalked it up to being such a fan of the original.  Safe, however, is absolutely the goods.

I certainly hope so. He deserves it. I recently saw him on Celebrity Rehab and, when he broke down crying in front of Dr. Drew, well... I'd be lying if I didn't say I was moved.

Hey... About True Justice - the season that is airing on Reelz right now is the original first season? That is to say, those six DTV movies cut back into separate episodes?

I guess that means they'll eventually release it all as a complete season box set. And I think I'd rather wait for that rather than watch them as movies. Seems like the better way to experience it, as it was always intended to be a series.

On the other hand, if what they're airing on Reelz are new episodes, then I'll have to "catch up" by watching those movies first.

Does anyone know what the deal is with this? The show doesn't even air down here so, whatever happens, I'll have to wait for video anyway.

They are exactly the same, Erix.

They shot 13 episodes of True Justice. But untill recently they were unable to find a Distributor. As a result they repackaged the 13 episodes into 6 DTV Movies (Brotherhood, Race Wars, Payback). It's mostly boring stuff. There are a few unintentional comedic gems but I can't recommend watching this unless you are a Die-hard Seagalogist.
