I wasn't sure which it was (Post-converted or filmed in 3D) going in to the film.  The only remaining show was 3D, so that was the way I went. There really wasn't a whole lot of memorable 3D in it.  If I watch it again, I will go for 2D.

It really doesn't matter in the end. There are so many great moments and I can forgive the threadbare plot.  The aim was to assemble the Avengers and they succeeded.  I can't wait for the next round of Marvel action films.

VIGILANTE is like one of the last classic grindhouse flicks. Love it.

My copy took a few days to ship, Hunter, so don't feel bad. It's so worth it.

I agree, Elvis. The one thing I don't like is that they didn't have Forster and Co. go after the rest of the gang.

Went to the Redbox and rented 11-11-11 and a movie called Inkubus that stars Robert Englund. They're both pretty short, so I figured I'd check them out.

Also got The Mangler in the mail. Ted Levine in a lead role!

I'm really hoping that JEAN VILAIN does not die. I mean, it's probably going to happen, but come on! He should be a recurring antagonist.

Sorry, Rene. But he's THE MAIN GUY. Therefore, HE MUST DIE.

And, hopefully, it will be A COOL DEATH.

Yeah, and he seems to be relishing being THE MAIN GUY. It's going to be awesome seeing Van Damme back on the big screen.

Watching Inkubus right now. Pretty boring, but Robert Englund is doing a great job as THE MAIN GUY, and the movie also has William Forsthye and JOEY FATONE in supporting roles. Eh, it's only 80 minutes.

I agree, though, the hate heaped on the first one in some circles is a little much.  It wasn't as bad as they let on, and not as good as alot of us let on.

Well, I still say that since the first one came out there's been way too much hipster hate from it from the main people at CHUD, which I find disappointing considering how popular this thread is on their site.

Yeah that is a good point. I enjoyed that movie but I can admit some things could have been done better. This time I hope the film is better received due to it being better made.

Well, right now I'm in the middle of watching Caliber 9, the first movie I chose to watch via Netflix Instant Streaming. The movie's not quite what I was expecting going in but so far I think it's cool. I mainly logged on to mention a line that literally made me lol; a police chief tells the anti-hero, in reference to his hot girlfriend, "Go on and get out of here and play with her dangling dingleberries!" Oh did I laugh. For that reason alone I am glad I picked that movie first.

In that "WE'RE GOING TO KILL THEM" scene, i saw Jet Li and New Guy missing.

My love for Rachel Nichols is well documented, so i am definitely going to catch this.

Eko mentioned TRUE LIES as a movie deserving of a HD upgrade, but damn so does THE HITCHER. Britain got a Special Edition, widescreen with a director and star C. Thomas Howell commentary track. Meanwhile, we're stuck with a barebones FS disc.

Thinking of bumping up some Ruter Hauer flicks. What's the word on OMEGA DOOM and THE BLOOD OF HEROES?

Guys, The Avengers ain't a flash in the pan. Best realization of the Hulk I've seen on screen, and Mark Ruffalo is easily the best part, but we all know you guys will stay for Harry Dean Stanton's funny cameo and Samuel L. Jackson and Powers Boothe yelling at each other. Reminds me I need to shit or get off the pot on my Jules Winnfield/Cash Bailey fan-fic.

Oh God, and I saw a man dressed as Black Widow (along some nerdy girl Thor, Hawkeye and Loki). Shit was NERD CITY at the multiplex tonight. There were so many Captain America impostors, you'd think Albert Pyun and Matt Salinger were signing DVD's in the lobby.

Preach the fuckin' gospel, Erix, and shut up, Rene. An Expendables movie where THE MAIN GUY gets HIS "DEATH" is stupid.

Caliber 9 is the goods. Probably my favorite poliziotteschi yet alongside Revolver. The lead is a dead ringer for Dean Norris, man.

Been meaning to see The Blood of Heroes and Split Second for some time. Thought I heard Omega Doom was shit.

The DVD is actually anamorphic widescreen, if I remember correctly, on The Hitcher. I'm all for a Blu-ray. One of the most relentless, unpredictable thrillers of the 80's. Rutger is as scary/intimidating as the T-800.

Fucking Michael Bay. Should've let me do my thing, get Clive Owen for Ryder.

I was mistaken, THE HITCHER is anamorphic, but still, want that C. Thomas commentary.

I've reavaluated and had my opinion change on a lot of movies since joining this B Thread, and THE HITCHER is one of them. There was a time I didn't like it, but now I consider it one of the great B thrillers of the 80's. Like Roger Ebert, I was wrong.

Rutger Hauer is a mesmerizing and creepy presence in the film, but give the much maligned Howell his due, he plays off of him perfectly. His histrionics and exasperation as the screws are turned by Hauer are a big part of the fun of the rollercoaster ride. And when Howell finally turns the tables on his tormentor -finally severing their bond or ensuring it will always be there, depending on your view- you feel his relief.

Favorite part of the movie: the early scene between Hauer & Howell, when the simple picking up of a hitchhiker, leads to a sinister encounter and the threat of death. You feel Howell's panic and Hauer's mennace

Favorite 'Oh, shit' moment: the finger in the french fries

Surprised you didn't mention the homoeroticism running through this thing.  Especially the early Hauer and Howell scenes.  Yeah, I know most of you probably don't want to hear that, but it's there.

Love The Hitcher.  Sean Bean was great.

Sarcasm, for those that don't know me.

Rene (Mr.Eko), I agree.  Not only does True Lies need an HD Upgrade, I think it also could use an...Extended Edition.  Terminator 2 had...15 extra minutes added in one of it's early dvd releases.

The Expendables 2 trailer has everything I want in an action movie.

Epic one liners.
Mustaches
Epic Schwarzenegger one liners.
Pissed off Bruce Willis.
Assassin's Creed references.
Van Damme attempting to pronounce plutonium.
Explosions.
Badasses walking towards the screen in slo mo.
Arnold with a stogie.
Mad Max style post apocalyptic improvised tanks.
A Seagal style forearm break
Arnold performing feats of strength.
Chuck Norris strafing an entire squadron of bad guys, firing an assault rifle single handedly from the hip.
A never before seen dream fight between two action stars.
and it ends on a fist bump.

The only way I'd love that trailer even more, is if it said coming Direct to Video at the end.

Fuck anyone who hates this trailer, because they hate everything I love. It just sucks that Gary Daniels and Steve Austin couldn't come back to take part in the Airport battle.

Yeah and not by 'Ridiculous CGI Blade', either.  Maybe Cyrus 'The Virus' style.

Not meaning to rub your face in it but it is Director and Writer commentary; Select Scene commentary with Hauer, Howell and others.  Also, you get a new (at the time) documentary and 2 short films.

The documentary is great as everyone is really proud of their work on the film and it discusses the critical attacks the film got.  The title of the doc, 'How do films like this get made?' is from an article written by a hack who was on set with no indication they were going to do a hatchet piece.

The short films include one made by Hauer and the other is the film used by Harmon to get funding for The Hitcher.  It stars the late great Charles Napier as a psychotic cop.

So yes, a prime example of a film finally getting it's due on dvd.

Most likely, and a lot of movies are doing it that way. It doesn't really bother me, if it's done right. Even John Rambo did it. It makes it easier to do repeated takes, for one thing. And to edit the movie down for the airline and TV versions of the films.

Now... Maybe the original shot IS with real squibs, and the digital alteration was done for the trailer. That would be nice too.

Either way, I'm too excited about the movie to really complain too much about CGI blood.

That UK DVD of THE HITCHER really is terrific.  Between that, the discs for Carpenter's THEY LIVE and PRINCE OF DARKNESS, the special editions of Lynch's LOST HIGHWAY and MULHOLLAND DRIVE and all the region-3 Asian movies I'm into, an all-region DVD player became a necessity long ago.  A worthwhile investment.  Even FOX's 2-disc edition of PREDATOR was available something like 2 years earlier overseas before it hit the USA.  (Does it work the same with blu-ray releases?  I haven't made that leap yet.)

The Blu-Ray situation hasn't taken off yet.  When I say that I mean independent releases.  Distributors like Arrow (Red Scorpion) and Eureka are leading the way.  I hope more follow.

As i've said before, releases for Italian Crime classics are non-existent here.

I'm sure you'll love the film.  The question is what kind of audience you watch the film with.  I had two dudes in the row behind me (at 4 and 8) and there was a contest over who found the jokes funnier.  It was like having live 'Canned laughter'.  Not enough to damage the experience for me, but I wish they had gotten stuck in traffic or something.

I have.  It was produced by the same company that made Mortal Kombat and boy do a couple of things give it away.  The title sequence is VERY similar to MK and it also has a techno soundtrack and dodgy CGI.  I wasn't impressed too much.

Rhona Mitra is in it and her implants are distracting and not in a good way.  She looked much better in Doomsday without them.

BIG BREASTS. Rhona Mitra. Always a good combination. We'll also be seeing more of Mitra in STRIKE BACK Season 2 later this year.

Doomsday is one of my all time favourite films. Had such a blast with it.

Hopefully Neil Marshall's Game of Thrones directing gig will buy him the cred to do a new film.

He is doing the biggest episode of the season.  It will be episode 9 and will be the battle of Blackwater.  In an interview, he said it was his biggest sequence and really plans to show some serious 'impact' in it.  The were filling a dummy up with entrails when he gave the interview, apparently the recepient of a catapult shot.

It should get him a phone call or two.

He's actually played a villan in several films. No Retreat No Surrender, Black Eagle, Replicant and Untill Death (Well not exactly, but he plays a junkie corrupt cop).

But i agree, Van Damme really is an effective actor when his role is right. He's capable of real emotion at times.

I'll have to hold off on combing my hair for a little bit because I'm still recovering from the multiple nerdgasms I had while watching The Avengers this evening. I and the nearly-full theater I saw the movie with had a great time.

Gents, I must share my experience with you this past night

First, they showed the expendables 2 trailer before the avengers...this was a great moment as you could hear mumblings and murmurs about their being a second one until Chuck Norris hit the screen...the crowd went nuts. When Arnold came up though you could feel the energy shoot up exponentially. It was really well recieved.

As for The Avengers...duke this ones for you baby.

There is a lot to say about this, but I'll put it simply for you guys...

This might be the best movie I've ever seen...no joke no hyperbole
post #83194 of 95712

I was on the edge of my seat until duke saw it. Far as I was concerned, it's like I needed him to confirm the movie's greatness. Now that he has, I can be content in the knowledge that The Avengers is quite possibly the most entertaining and satisfying comic book movie ever made.

After Elvis' take on Chato's Land, I decided to make a blind buy out of it, since I would always see it advertised on TBS or TNT whenever they were showing it, but I never finally watched it until now. Not a bad movie. It didn't wow me, but seeing Bronson stalking Jack Palance, Richard Jordan, Ralph Waite, and co. made for an entertaining film.

Now I'm watching The Mangler. Ted Levine really should have had more lead roles. He does really well in this one.

Awesome. I guess I'll have to go through all three columns to put even more films in my instant queue that I likely won't have time to watch.

I have to laugh that the list includes a film I've heard of but not seen before: Tintotera: Killer Shark. It co-stars the real-life HUGO STIGLITZ.
