Tonight on TCM: One of my favorite classic Action movies THE MOST DANGEROUS GAME. The blueprint for many B movies that followed.

And on HDNMV: Bobcat Goldthwait's supposedly blackly hilarious GOD BLESS AMERICA.

Just put in a couple of screener requests. One, for some Tom Sizemore movie that's apparently hitting theaters in June that looks very much like Get The Gringo. Another for Dragon Eyes, which they're sending personally to me, as they did not actually have any particular screeners for that film in advance. Hope it's like my Assassination Games screener, which came with professional font saying my name above the title. Told my mom I starred in it.

I decided to bring that post back to this page for Keith and the others that didn't see this get posted last summer. If nothing else, that movie will have some tremendous Dolph outfits.

As I didn't mention it last night I'll say that I haven't seen as many Carpenter films as others but the ones I like the most are Halloween, Assault on Precinct 13, Escape From New York, Big Trouble in Little China, and my favorite, The Thing. I find the last one to be especially awesome and I think it'll take a long while for me to get interested in the remake that they try to say it's not but honestly, that's the best thing to call it.

The Thing,  re-quel, man, it was almost something...  worthwhile.  It starts out promisingly enough, and the creature effects are top notch.  The characterization is just non existent, and there is a point in the ending that totally fucks everything up.  For me, at least.  I won't reveal it here, but it's one of those things that if they went the other way, I would have given the movie a whole lot of wriggle room.   Totally different situation, but I'm reminded of SEVEN, when Mills fails to blow his own brains out, which would have made that a perfect movie, instead of a pretty damn good one.  Like I said, not much comparison, Seven is a much better movie.

My Top 10 Carpenter:

1. ASSAULT ON PRECINCT 13

2. HALLOWEEN

3. THE THING

4. ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK

5. THE FOG

6. BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA

7. ELVIS

8. STARMAN

9.THEY LIVE

I'm quite the fan of The Thing prequel. I dug it a lot. It's nowhere near the level of Carpenter's film, but it was never going to achieve that. I liked the ballsy way of them killing off the

of the film.

My Parents went to Chili's and brought us back some tasty hamburgers. Skimmed through Wolfen since I hadn't seen it in a while, and had a good time with it again. Gregory Hines owns the film, and it's got Noonan!

About to start playing Batman: Arkham City.

Saw it on demand a few weeks ago. A masterpiece of dark comedy, it's basically Falling Down or Natural Born Killers as lensed through a Parker/Stone-esque contempt for tabloid fodder, and I'll be damned if it isn't brilliant. You'll love, Elvis.

Here's my Facebook writeup:

More like God bless Bobcat Goldthwait. While the earnest heart on its sleeve and the comedian-cum-filmmaker's contempt for American pop culture is straightforward, this is a cold-blooded, riveting black comedy on the same wavelength as his previous effort, World's Greatest Dad, a graceful, venomous satire of what most of us want to do when we log onto TMZ or open up this week's US Weekly: kill them. Here, Joel Murray, brother of Bill, is a brilliant world of hurt as Frank Murdock, a sad sack who serves as our guide through the polarized Obama-era America, a thinly disguised purgatory where Donald Trump thinks he can influence a presidential election and the last refuge of a celebrity's star power is a reality series. Frank snaps at his sudden, unjust firing and the control the media has seemingly had on everyday life, earns a fan in Roxy (the great Tara Lynne Barr), a foul-mouthed high school girl and teenage runaway who plays off like an evil Juno by way of Denis Leary (and do NOT compare her to Juno in front of her).

Tony De Cristofaro, who joined me for this one, remarked that the film's structure plays out as your average GTA joyride, killing anything that moves or speaks, and I think that speaks more to the film's ideology than anything. If someone wanted to kill the Kardashians or Biebers of the world and actually did, even the people with the most staunch hatred of them would probably think "Who would do such a thing?" Maybe we would, but not on moral or legal grounds. That's where Goldthwait pinpoints his savagery, and Frank's perverse journey through eliminating all of his hate is not only a top-shelf revenge fantasy but a display of just how futile actually undertaking the command of our subconscious would turn out to be.

The spirit of Paddy Chayefsky is still gleaming over us, and he's still mad as hell. And that's just the way we want it.

A perfect world would dictate Joel Murray gets at least an Independent Spirit nomination out of this.

GANGSTER SQUAD looks really good.  Something about the way the trailer was edited felt a bit weird, but I like how it seems to be operating in a more "heightened" sense of reality than say LA CONFIDENTIAL, which I rank up there as one of the best noir films of all time.

I can even forgive the use of that Jay-Z song in the trailer...i actually feel like it kinda works.

Awesome. That was nice of them. I imagine that you ate both dinner and watched Wolfen at the same time.

As for that Facebook app, I got "Cutter". Works for me.

So, last night I was on Netflix and I ended up being too damn tired to watch anything in full but I still went through the gigantic list to find something to watch for today. I came upon Rulers of the City, another Italian film from Fernando Di Leo, but in '76. A big appeal was that it starred Jack Palance. I decided to watch the first few minutes; that was a good decision. It was a trippy scene but it ended up with old Jack killing someone and then bitch-slapping a young boy and knocking him unconscious! After that, it went to the top of my queue.

After I just finished watching it now, I thought this was surprisingly awesome. Let me list a few reasons why:

Jack actually plays the lead bad guy, Scarface Manzari. He's so terrifying, one character describes him as such: "Everytime I see him, my asshole twitches".

The lead is a young guy named Tony who is obsessed with Brazil. In fact, the first shirt you see him wear says "Brasil" and hell if I know why the image on the shirt is of a black and white cat fishing on a red sailboat, but I'll be damned if I wouldn't wear that shirt tomorrow if I could! He also drives a dune buggy version of a Brazilian car, the Puma GT. Anyway, Tony works as a guy who collects debt for the Mob in Rome.

There aren't too many women characters in this movie and the ones you do see are for brief moments. The one that you see the most is a chick named Clara, who happens to be a whore. A guy accuses her of being a whore and sleeping with him and his buddies. She admits to it, but then says that none of them could satisfy her.

Early on, Tony has a fight with some bad guys. He is able to whip all of them. Now, the fighting itself isn't all that great, but what happens to be great is that some young kids watch him fight and once he wins, they cheer and applaud.

I should probably explain what the plot is: simply, it's that Tony and another guy join up to get revenge against Scarface Manzari for past deeds. Also involved is a flamboyantly gay guy named Napoli who provides a lot of legit humor as he's an old Mob guy who happens to be flaming. Hey, he always wears an ascot and just from the way he acts, it's obvious.

There is a minor character who looks a lot like either Ricky Jay or Bud Spencer. I'll go with Jay, as he happened to be a card dealer.

There's a more major character who happens to look like former football coach Dave Wannstedt. That made me laugh as he used to coach my favorite team, the Chicago Bears.

The three heroes try to think of a place to hide out; Napoli suggests the whorehouse, as it'd be secure AND the two young guys could get laid. Really. Despite that, the movie does come across as homoerotic at times, and I'm not talking about the obviously gay guy. I'm talking the other two dudes.

Anyway, I definitely recommend this. This is a crime drama with a fair bit of humor that is never boring and it has a story I really dug and has its share of memorable moments.

Facebook has deemed me THE MUTILATOR. Better than I expected.

Perfect, my plans to try and watch Gojira tonight have been hijacked by this one. You had me at "Everytime I see him, my asshole twitches."

By the way, Blackthorn is awesome. A great revisionist Western. Thanks, Erix!

That Django Unchained news is pretty bad. That character must be cursed. First Costner bails, now Russell has bailed. I wonder what Tarantino's going to do now? Either way, I can't wait to see who he gets to play the role. He should get Sid Haig!

I'm trying to decide what was stupider. The fact that the alien missiles resemble the pegs you use in the game (which, I suppose could count as a cute visual Easter egg if you really care) or... the fact that THEY ACTUALLY PLAY BATTLESHIP. I'm serious... That scene where they decide to use the sonar waves or whatever to detect where the alien ships are... You have the guy looking at his radar grid (full of red and white dots) going: "Fire a missile at ECHO ONE ONE.... and FOXTROT TWO SEVEN" I didn't know whether to laugh or cry. I mean, okay, I get it... It's Battleship, so that had to happen sooner or later, but still... It accentuated how stupid and pointless the whole movie is.

Furthermore, it's fucking boring. Isn't it? The heroes are vanilla... The villains are faceless and completely forgettable. Even Rhianna, God bless her, and her attempt to be Vasquez... Doesn't work.

I can appreciate a dumb action movie as much as the next guy. I won't really complain about the stupid, nonsensical plot or the cardboard characters. If the movie were fast-paced and fun, that wouldn't bother me so much. What gets on my tits is that the movie is 130 minutes long, but it takes at least 40 of those minutes setting up the boring characters and the ridiculous storyline. Forty minutes! ... of corny romantic bullshit, posturing and soccer games to establish rivalries that will grow into predictable bromances. Three quarters of an hour go by before we see any action. And even Liam Neeson fans will be disappointed, as he spends the majority of his screen time barking orders into a telephone.

This movie is the pits. The more I think about it, the more I dislike it.

I'm right there with you. I really like Peter Berg. I thought The Kingdom was terrific and very underrated. Much better than the similarly themed and more pretentious Syriana. Hell... I even confess to finding things to appreciate about Hancock. If it were on cable, maybe I'd even watch it again. It has its moments. But this... I just couldn't bring myself to enjoy it. The action is not badly staged. It's just uninspired. And, since the motivation of the villains and the central conflict are both so hollow, none of it has any resonance. I don't know that Berg could have done any better than this, given the material, but he really shouldn't have wasted his time.

Yeah, I've always been interested in the movie as to be honest, I often feel like Joel Murray's character at all the stupidity in America; I haven't watched any of Bobcat's films that he's helmed (which is embarrassing to say as cripes, as a kid I saw the movie he starred in with a talking horse, Hot to Trot!) but thankfully even though I wasn't able to see it when it played at a film festival in Orlando last month, starting tomorrow it'll be at the arthouse joint in town for a week and I will check it out then.

Oh, so it is as bad as it looks. And who could have seen this coming... surprisingly I haven't seen any of the director's work before. Yes, not even the TV show he did for a few years. That sounds amazing given how I feel about one of the ladies on Friday Night Lights, but it's true. AICN says that the part will not be recast.  Instead, the part will be absorbed by Walton Goggins!!!!!

Sad to see Russell leave, he would have killed it.  However, Goggins should eat this up.

And, in my honor, do yourselves a favor... Go see The Avengers (again) that weekend instead, as a reminder of the right way to make a summer popcorn movie.

You're more than welcome, HT. I'm glad you liked Blackthorn so much. I hope others on the thread follow your lead.

There's so much stupid shit in this. The Aliens especially.

I went in with moderate to low expectations and it delivered on those.  I really don't want to defend it but this was never going to be high art.  It is high cheese, though.

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

When the Veterens report for duty and the legless Soldier gets to be hero, are you guys telling me you didn't stand up and salute?

This looks like it will be fun.  Gooding Jr as a vanilla lead and with Dolph doing Badass Bad again, he should easily make this worthwhile.

I've just found out that there is a TV/Sci-Fi Convention taking place at a newly built Arena near where I live, this weekend.  Ordinarily, I wouldn't be interested.  However, this convention will be attended by Christopher Lambert and Eric Roberts!!!!

I could meet some of my heroes this week.  The prices for Autographs and Photos are ridiculous (£30 pounds for either), but I will not need to go far for it.  I haven't decided yet on whether to go.

More Goggins is great. Not Kurt Russell great, but pretty damn great.

Netflix finally sent me RETURN OF THE STREET FIGHTER. So, yay!

So Jox, which recent Lundgren movies are worth watching? I have COMMAND PERFORMANCE and ICARUS on my shelf but haven't got around to them yet. Obvuously I've seen EXPENDABLES and UNISOL 4.

You probably mean you've seen EXPENDABLES and UNISOL 3 or haven't seen EXPENDABLES 2 and UNISOL 4! wink.gif

COMMAND PERFORMANCE are perfect picks!

I haven't seen any of 2012's batch yet (SMALL APARTMENTS, STASH HOUSE, UNISOL 4, ONE IN THE CHAMBER, THE EXPENDABLES 2 and THE PACKAGE) but they're all looking promising!

Obviously skip IN THE NAME OF THE KING 2 which Dolph just publicly discussed to Empire:

Quote:
“Why did you make this film?” we asked Dolph recently.

“Oh god, the Uwe Boll question,” he said.

“What can I say? It was an experience,” he went on. “It wasn’t exactly my taste, but I did it for other reasons. I was getting divorced at the time and I needed some cash quickly to pay for a few things… lawyers. Uwe is actually very impressive though. He has his own business and he runs everything the way he wants to do it, up there in Vancouver. He makes his own movies, gets his own financing. I wish I could do that. I wouldn’t have to work for anybody else!”

So, we wondered, did downtime on the Expendables 2 set ever see Dolph and The Stath comparing notes? And how did Dolph feel about playing Statham’s son?

“Am I his son?!” This was apparently news. “God, I hope not. I didn’t see the first one. Well, I saw part of it… I don’t know who I play. I think I’m just another guy who has the same sort of adventure. I don’t know what happened to Jason. Did he go back in time too? [He didn’t.] We never talked about it, never mentioned it. Wow, you learn things all the time…”

IP MAN 3D in the works?

Quote:
"Though star Donnie Yen had indicated shortly after the release of Ip Man 2 that he did not intend to return to the hugely popular series of biographical pictures about the life of Bruce Lee's mentor, sales agents Pegasus Motion Pictures have announced that they will be launching sales on the upcoming Ip Man 3D in Cannes and the entire original team is coming back - including Yen, producer Raymond Wong, writer Edmond Wong and director Wilson Yip. Lynn Hung and Yu Bo are currently slated to co-star and though the film is still listed in development they are aiming for a 2013 release date."

Hey, Keith, have you got around to ATTACk THE BLOCK yet? My favorite movie of last year. (Anybody disagree that it was the Action movie of the year?)

Wow, as the resident QT hater, even I am excited by this bit of news.  My interest in this project just jumped exponentially.

As the WWE/F's own J.R would say "BUSINESS IS ABOUT...TO PICK UP".

SLOBBERKNOCKER!!!...i JUST FELT THE NEED TO SAY THAT

Y'know last night before I went to bed, I was thinking that it would be a great idea if the amazing Goggins got the chance to be upgraded in the film, and lo and behold it's become true. Better than cutting the character out, as apparently he is a pretty big villain in the film.

Got in a few orders. Beyond The Valley Of The Dolls, Journey To The Center Of The Earth, blu-ray, 2012: Zombie Apocalypse, Looker (directed by Crichton!), and the last 2 volumes of The Three Stooges. The last of Shemp, and the only ones that Joe Besser (ugh) did.
